I'll say that when I was born, my first name was extremely rare. I didn't run into three other people with it throughout my childhood. And Bob McAllister at Wonderama never saw me in the magic mirror.
But, for the past 11 years or so, my name has ranked in the top ten according to SSA.gov. Personally, I preferred when it was rare and obscure.
If Congress approves funds for this year, the do-not-call list could begin operation by summer.
The perfect way to kill it. Don't fund it. "We've got a war to fight and taxes to cut. Plus if we fund this, telemarketers will be inconvenienced. And they have lobbyists, and you don't."
Since the Indian article makes no mention of any obfuscation-defeating technology being employed, what is to prevent people from smearing on the mud, and claiming to have hit a puddle if stopped by the bobbies?
on the new Death Star, I found that trying to envision the "Big Picture" interfered with the specific requirements of my task. I needed control mechanisms smart enough to deal with Storm Trooper suits, regular Empire uniforms, robots with various temperature ranges, Wookies. It needed to be able to maintain a comfortable temperature range in the beam tunnel vicinity even during firing. And it needed to be efficient enough that they wouldn't shift power from the exhaust port shields to the jacuzzi heaters like they did on the old Death Star.
Since they can't tell if you've actually installed/are using the software or not, they can claim that they won't take returns after the box has been opened. But since it requires opening/starting up on the computer to even read the license, the purchaser is screwed if they don't agree.
With software on floppies, they were probably also concerned about viruses.
Would posting it to a website be sufficient? That would require web access to read the license your buying prior to your buying it? That would be especially difficult to do if you are purchasing an OS to enable you to get web access in the first place.
As mentioned, since Rendezvous is based on zeroconf, here is a paper explaining how to secure a zerconf network. Facts vs. FUD. Let the better approach win.
Considering the extreme cost-savings inherent in zero-config networking like this, what is the most likely Microsoft response? The ones I can think of are:
a) Ignore
b) FUD
c) Embrace/extend/destroy
One important question: Does the Apple Public Source License (under which Rendezvous has been released) give Apple the ability to stop Microsoft from embracing/extending/destroying?
Microsoft has been losing the battle of the mobile phones, both in OS implementation for SmartPhones and in the specific browsers carried. If you look here or here, you can read further about the success Opera has been having in the field. Damaging the reputation of Opera, even in so petty, small and childish a manner, would help Microsoft in their eyes.
Since Microsoft is somewhere past the 2 billionth time, I'm disinclined to trust their good intentions. And while sending a client-specific style-sheet isn't damning, sending a faulty one to a competitor shortly after the release of their new product is.
Setting it to 0, as Linux does, is one possibility; as discussed below, in a NAT situation this can leak information, and hence is probably undesirable.
On OpenBSD and FreeBSD, however:
A keyed generator, as is used in OpenBSD and FreeBSD, provides some protection, but one needs to be careful to avoid duplication if the generator is rekeyed periodically.
have the pseudo-random IPidfield specifically to avoid this sort of information leakage, or is this a happy side effect from addressing some other problem?
I find it especially interesting that this method works best on home users and small businesses. Interesting and frustrating.
I'd like to believe it's because ...

people are actually living their lives. But the continued existence of Evercrack et. al. would seem to support the interviewed individuals who complain that it is currently boring and repetitive. I'm sure they'll work on it and in three to six months it'll be Simscrack.
It's annoying that it has to be said again and again and again: It was the DOCK OWNERS who locked out the workers. The workers did NOT go on strike and they didn't walk out. The owners pre-emptively locked them out.
I'm not going to get into the other issues involved.
over there, in a box.
But when I say it, people try to involuntarily medicate me again. Where's the justice?

Ok. ...ugh ...Huh?

What does the TNG stand for?

Industry "fact sheets" make reporting so much easier. Now I have time for another nap.

Rendezvous is released under the Apple Public Source License.

Wait, you wouldn't NEED a beowulf cluster, with the Rendezvous-enabled programs CPU-shifting the work in your office.
If you had tiny temperature controls on the interior surface of the car, you could change the color of the car at the flick of the switch.

In a word: GUILTY!!!!
What? Do you want California to suddenly go brunette? Think of the repercussions!
