I agree partially. I love how linux does this but at the same time it's not perfect. It sounds like you may have a configuration related issue. I'm running purely devfs on gentoo. Permissions stick and I have links for /dev/hda -> /dev/bus....whatever. Although my hdd recently died and I'm going to rebuild from udev, since that is the "new and better" way. Maybe that will give me some new issues.

I should add, that I found the tag specification somewhat confusing. The default is ".", which is current. Current is now FreeBSD-6.0 probably very unstable.

Your tag should be tag=RELENG_5_3, although it may need to be tag=RELENG_5. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that for the most up to date 5.3 you need tag=RELENG_5_3. This will make sense after reading the make world section of the handbook.

I did google on the make world process for clarity. You may come across a site "BSDVault" that is rather helpful.

Sorry I can't provide any links. The school net connection is always overloaded, so all I can stand waiting on is the gentoo forums and slashdot.

I have had almost no problems. My system is almost always under load. Except randomly when compiling I get "cc:segfaults". I can restart the make process and it will skip on through. Some times it will segfault elsewhere depends on how long the compile is. Then sometimes it will go through a long compile without incident. Doing a "make -jX" doesn't seem to make a difference. My cflags are basic "-O2 -pipe" with the processor type set at "p2". I don't think it's hardware no other applications segfault or any strange problems. I'm upding to RC1 now, maybe that will stop it, but I've been hoping that for the past few Beta releases. Just curious if I'm the only one.

The first desktop is just a video player running ndiswrapper 0.9. It works well except it does lose assoication randomly but seems get it back on it's own after maybe 1 minute max.

The second desktop is my main computer using ndiswrapper 0.10 it loses association more often and for longer periods of time, more like 2-5 minutes.

The FreeBSD box never loses association, at least not long enough for me to notice. It's extremely solid.

I have experimented with different versions of the win32 Atheros drivers, but they never seem to work right. Even, when I had Windows on my main desktop, I was never able to get the Atheros drivers to work right. I have also tried the native ath drivers on both FreeBSD and Linux, again FreeBSD's seemed more solid, but neither could use SuperG turbo mode.

I now have my 2 linux computers and this one using windows drivers using ndis wrappers. My wireless speeds are now up to acceptable.
