I don't understand why people are given moderation points who don't know how to use it. As of this moment, 50% of moderators think that the parent comment is overrated. I say the moderators are in over their head. With all the recent controversy with Sony I don't see why is it overrated to question their future technology? Heck if they can botch your system for a stupid country music, think what they'll do for Matrix or LOTR etc etc. They are caught with their pants down now; what it means is that they learnt their lessons and will force a bill or something that makes it legal for them to install rootkits (it is not far fetched at all).
Has anybody performed a study regarding the loss of productivity due to patents?
Yes. In my study I found out that while researching this topic I was not productive at all. My productivity loss was 100% in fact. If I hadn't done that study, I'd have had at least 20% more productivity than total loss, which is my usual by the way.
Let me know if you need the paper. It has enlightened me a lot, hope it does the same for you.
I just hope game manufactures don't think that their games should require $300 cards
Simple - OEM pressure. I can confirm this because I have a friend who works for Microsoft and I asked him why is that every year we are forced to upgrade. Can't you guys do with what is already available? He told me that they can optimize the systems to run far better on existing hardware but the OEMs don't like that. Dell apparently wants users to upgrade every 2 years or so. Bottom line - they don't care about end user. They know that the end user will spend to use the latest and greatest software.
Well if you had bothered to read the whole article, then you'd have noticed that Intel's top of the line costs $196 more than its AMD counterpart and still manages to practically suck in every department.
When you come back to earth and go to a bar, you can say that you are an astronaut and look around for the hottest chick. But when you go to a bar after reading slashdot...well you know what happens next;)
I second you. He sounds more like a high schooler who couldn't get the girl he wanted rather than the seasoned geek who cared for the "stuff that matters".
"If you are a web "programmer", it's definitely nice to have well-built tools that let you think even less about what you are doing and come up with something useful."
Don't know about you, but it sounds dangerous to me.
"If you were to grab any random teenager from one of the midnight launch lines for the latest Halo, Grand Theft Auto or Madden release and were to ask them how much it'd take to pay them to make games, there's a good chance that you'd find more than a few who would tell you that it's their dream to get into development and that they'd do it for free. "
Call it a flame, but am I the only one seeing the stupidity in that paragraph. They are KIDS for crying out loud! Let us see if they still are willing to work for free when...umm... they graduate or have a family. This author is a moron!
For every $10,000 they receive in settlements, they could be losing multiples of in lost future business.
Not trying to pick on you, but I find that statement little odd. May be I am not understanding RIAA business, but are they selling anything directly to the consumer? RIAA is an association - a front for Recording industry. If people collectively decide that RIAA is evil, which they wouldn't be wrong by the way, how hard is to abolish that start a new front with a new name and do the same shoddy things all over again? Mean while the recording comanies will still be selling music. Once people are listening to the music they like, they don't think about RIAA or BMG for that matter.
I know every body keeps complaining that artists are screwed and blah blah blah. But in reality, I am seeing a lot of artists supporting RIAA and co. To name a few - Metallica, Eminem etc. Even the one that are quiet are guilty according to me. Even if they are not getting paid their worth or their share, they are getting enough to buy and maintain a lavish lifestyle. Bottom line - it doesn't matter what people think as long as we have urge and need for music. Consumer will be screwed, whether you like it or not. My $0.02
Would it be in our best interest to be able to view the source code of non classified projects?
Yes. It would be very ideal and it would be in our very best interest to view the source code. It I think affirms the part of accountability. I want to make sure that my govt. isn't screwing me (fines etc) by writing manipulated code
If the government is in fact using our tax dollars to pay programmers, should we be entitled to view the outcome of their work
Of course, I want to be sure and for that matter every responsible citizen should be assured that their dollars are not being just given to corporations. Halliburton rings any bell?
and does it become public domain if paid for by public funds?
This is debatable. Obviously you wouldn't want your defense software etc to be open source but breath analyzer, I think poses no threat to national security.
I doubt it. GPL or GPL-compatible philosophy is basically "you can do whatever you want with the source". I believe MS licenses will state "here is what you can do with the source".
Well if you have RTFA, you'd have seen the suggestion, you were looking for - "Microsoft has no open-source alternative and is a reference-only license that allows licensees to view source code in order to gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of Microsoft technology.". Bottom line - RTFM.
From TFA - "You cannot regulate code without going through the First Amendment-type balancing tests we have for any other type of speech," says Cindy Cohn, a lawyer at the Electronic Freedom Foundation in San Francisco. "Code is speech."
Yeah right. If I go by your same logic and just for the sake of argument let us also assume that Napster was Open Source. Do you really think RIAA still wouldn't have crushed it? First Amendment my ass. Our "friendly" (and genius) lawmakers will find a loophole or make a law that First Amendment will violate. Yup the greenback has a voice, and it is fuckin' loud!
Your first line should read - "It's all about the community - what Bram did was to unify the community into donating bandwidth & pornthrough BitTorrent...". He made it popular by offering pr0n. See he has some marketing skills in him. I think he is qualified to be CEO.
My goal is to provide a road map for using alternatives, or the equivalent of a "12-step method" for getting off Microsoft software (as if it were an addiction)
From experience, any thing more than 11 steps is not worth it!

It feels bad to work for Amazon now, doesn't it?
Yes. In my study I found out that while researching this topic I was not productive at all. My productivity loss was 100% in fact. If I hadn't done that study, I'd have had at least 20% more productivity than total loss, which is my usual by the way.

What did you expect? A dating site?

Not an insightful advice but hiring a qualified lawyer might help.
FTA: "(if they have opted to reveal their information)"

You sir, must be new to America!
I second you. He sounds more like a high schooler who couldn't get the girl he wanted rather than the seasoned geek who cared for the "stuff that matters".
Hey can we also get Narus to detect this fp crap? I'd pay for it goddammit!
Don't know about you, but it sounds dangerous to me.
Nope there are many Apus (Indians) there too!

So which of these stories is true? I don't want to flame on the wrong story!
Ahem...I take it you are a CEO of a company?
