"International students in the United States who receive doctorates in science, technology, engineering or math should get automatic one-year visa extensions that allow them to seek employment here. If these students get job offers and pass a security screening test, they should automatically get work permits and expedited residence status. If they cannot get a job, their visas should expire."
This is sort of already in place. Every international student, who graduates can apply for a work permit known as OPT (Optional Practical Training, I believe). This allows that student to seek employment in a field that is relevant to his/her education and or qualification. It is not automatic but nonetheless I have yet to hear a student get rejected for it. But it ends right there. After the year is over the individual already has to have a work permit or have a petition for it to stay legally in this country. I have personally seen couple of brilliant students leave this country because they couldn't get the work permit in time. Thus this suggestion of "expedited residence status" could be a very benefecial.
But now comes the ugly side of it. I bet the locals will not approve of it immediately, for very good reasons. Now they have to compete with potentially very hard working and probably smarter people for the same job. And I have seen instances where an American has been passed on for an Asian because they believe that person is going to work harder for less pay. But this new suggestion, if it becomes law, tilts the balance in favor of international students a bit. They can bargain for higher pay and will that cause any difference is to be seen. Now, IEEE was really campaigning hard to curtail H1B a year or so ago. We have to see how they react to it.
Is it just me or Fox is more like that Foxy whore who is passed around and abused by these gentlemen? And they don't even bother to tell Fox - "sorry, we used you". Oh well...
Photo-realism is of course very important. It can get you immersed in a game. But what about gameplay? For e.g. photo-realism took a new standard in games like Doom3. But a hour in to the game, I lost interest and realized I also list my $50. Every game in a genre is the same. How about re-inventing the gameplay? How about actually concentrating on virtual reality?
Yup I'm privy to some of those horror stories, even though I'm just a backup sysadmin for Blackboard. No wonder universities got together for an alternate. It's not ready for primetime but if Bb doesn't get its act together I wouldn't be surprised to see Sakai gain momentum.
This would be a big hit if they can stick to that price of $1.99 per video and have variety in the content provided. Already they have a winner with music videos and Pixar offerring six short films. MTV has turned in to a channel that has nothing to do with music. Also I don't have to put up with all the crappy vidoes with MTV stupid logos and artwork, assuming Apple is going to just give me a clean video. Along with that it'd be nice if they can provide other content like stand-up routines or I'd love if Jon Stewart could force comedy central to provide it's videos for video ipod.
I agree with you. And actually, I prefer Gaim over msn messenger because it has one important feature that msn messenger conveniently ignores - encryption. I think it is more valuable and important thatn pretty looks.
Actually it is the CEO's fault in most cases. Sacrificing QA for being on or before time to market. I have personally been involved in projects where I had to deploy code because there was pressure from higher up. I made it clear that the thing is not ready but the argument they make is - "doesn't matter, we can release pathces and upgrades!" Responsible? My ass!
Holding companies accountable, as suggested in the article, might be a slightly better solution, but again it's somewhat complicated when you start trying to hold an overseas company accountable
You don't hold overseas companies accountable, its not our job. We hold local companies accountable. They received the money from us. We don't care how they spend it or don't spend it. Normally these companies don't tell you upfront that they are the middle man. If they do that then their accountability is diminished. But in reality most of these companies say they are producing the code, have their licenses and brand name on them. So you just hold them accountable. If a software screws up they pay not the overseas company.
No kidding! If a car manufacturer produces a car that has a faulty part, is the engineer held laible? Hell no! its the company. You don't hear John Doe recalling the cars. Its GM that recalls it. Whether John is fired or not is a different issue and up to the company. Similarly the Software company is liable for the product. You blame Microsoft (sorry it was an easy target)!
Of course my economics is weak, but how would you be in a position to give aid when you indeed have a trace deficit? I am sure there is an explanation to this.
Here is one thing I don't understand. Why doesn't NASA cooperate with other countries in exploration, technology etc? Why not get Russia, China and even India involved in design a new space orbiter? When they share costs and brain power wouldn't it be cheaper and faster? What will Democrats have to complain at that point. This lone ranger philosophy has got to stop. It is only hindering us.
There is a reason - Microsoft has a tendency to treat every user as novice to the world of computers. Result is a bloatware, which tries to do too many things for you, in of course a cute way. I bet this new version of Hotmail is not going to be much different, of course we have to see it in action; screenshots tell only so much story. I'd really hate if another one of their dogs or a pins try to act cute with me again when all I am trying to do is write a goddamn email.
Even though you are trying to sound funny, I think two sections - "How to sell an idea" and "How to develop a business plan" will probably be invaluable. The key to success of an OSS is how much you can get funding in VC and how long you can keep them happy. Obviously this means profiting from the business model surrounding the product. So not only do you have to be a good at marketing yourself or the product, but you should have some business sense to make that project a success.
May be I am naive, but what else would you discuss in an OSS class except philosophy, legal, ethical and practicality arguments behind OSS? As far as I am concerned, it doesn't matter what programming language background the student has; because OSS class should not be about programming but every thing else surrounding it. For e.g. copyright law and how it relates to OSS, what are different OSS licenses and why are there so many? How can one create their own license and still maintain the spirit of OSS? And frankly the most important question this class should address is - WHY OSS?. I believe that between all the hoopla surrounding OSS, people have stopped asking the fundemental question.
I take it you've left America.
Yup...high time we find girlfriends...
US says NO, EU & China says FuckU. They bomb the shit out of each other. Every one lives peacefully ever after.

Hope the women from "distant planet" (venus?) are sympathetic to us geeks!

funny how I felt the same way when I read it on a lazy Thursday afternoon.
Oh man, what have you done! You just gave a brilliant idea to Insurance companies. And I am already broke!
Simple - politicians make laws to hold people accountable. Of course they are gonna exculde themselves!

Actually its the US that owes China. Currently I believe US owes China close to $250 billion and a similar amount to Japan.

Well their time zone is ahead of us, so they get the news early. Don't blame /. ;)
Uh oh, he is screwed
