  1. Fulfilling Prophecy on French Senate Passes Anti-Piracy Internet Cut-Off Law · · Score: 0

So now the gears are turning to cut us off from the internet if we break the law, just as the internet is becoming important to the point we would individually suffer without it. Next, our interactions on the internet become more important than the ones offline because we will be interacting with electronic devices wherever we go through RFID chips, and being cut off from that internet would be just horrible. Later, mind virtualization, The Matrix, you can dig it. But people never believe that silly stuff...

Is nobody else seeing the terrible downsides to the technology that we are inventing here?

Imagine a world 30 years from now where robots running on ____ fuel do all of the worlds manual labor. Meanwhile, there are gigantic slums of the poor dying off due to starvation because they have no jobs because the robots can do it for less. Governments won't care because the transfer of power from democratic governments will move to our increasingly large corporations - think feudal. The ones with the jobs are the robot programmers, makers, and all other job sectors still left after such a shift from labor to services is complete. It's these people (many of us would be included in this technological future, of course) that still hate their jobs and go home and hook up to a virtual reality machine to, not be happy, but merely relieve the stress of work.

We don't need a hostile AI takeover to enslave us in the Matrix; we have been enslaving ourselves in the Matrix ever since the industrial revolution. Are we happier? No. Why are we doing it? Evolution. Machines are simply the next evolution after Man.

  4. I've just had an epiphany on An Older Demographic May Soon Dominate Gaming · · Score: 1, Interesting
Up until just now I've always wanted more people to get into gaming. Before the Wii I wanted more people to game simply because its one more thing that we could all share in common. But now I realize that once the entire population games we are headed in a very bad direction. What happens when we are all playing Second Life?

Giving even one ounce of attention to a virtual reality takes an equal amount of attention away from physical reality. It's another opiate for the masses that opens the flood gates for a total control. We all know how video games are addictive (WoW?). So what happens when government funded psychologists start to highly recommend playing an alternate reality game as a stress reliever? Or as a way to safely fulfill fantasies in a way not disruptive to society? Then we are set up for a government funded Second Life (America's Army?).

This is scary. Beyond belief. Just because a movie hasn't been made on it yet doesn't mean that it's not starting to happen.

Do you see this happening? If you do, are you working for a company that is part of the gaming community aggregately pointing in this direction?

Of course it will happen, it means more $ for them.

No matter how many times someone signs up for a website with no privacy measures, that user still deserves an online social networking website with measures of privacy.

As for the currently popular argument on /. that the user should 'expect' this to happen... These people on mysapce and facebook aren't /.'ers!!! They are regular people that believe ToS's. Whoda thunk?

Saying these people don't deserve privacy on Faceboko because they started on Mysapce a few years back is like saying someone neverdeserves good credit because of that late utility bill 4 years ago.

  6. "Sharing isn't Stealing" reasoning? on U.S. Confiscating Data at the Border · · Score: 0
I wonder if the government attorneys are going to use the reasoning that 'sharing isn't stealing' that PiratPartiet is promoting. I wouldn't be surprised as this is exactly what they are doing. Are the RIAA/MPAA going to go after these customs agents for copying MP3's? Certainly not.

How long are these agents going to hold the information for? Indefinitely, I'd suspect. Just throw it into the Big Blue over there at Langely.

Furthermore, I'd like to comment on the overall direction we are headed. We as citizens have a right and a duty to overthrow our government when our government no longer suits us. Government is for us, we made it! So overthrow it! Stop paying your taxes and start yelling on street corners. Nobody is going to stop the corrupt politicians but you, so run for an office if that suits you. Nobody is going get out the message that we need change, NO, not just change in Iraq war and small changes that our current presidential candidates are proposing - BIG CHANGES. 9. I Don't Want to Sound Crazy, But... on Gadgets Have Taken Over For Our Brains · · Score: 0

This could easily be seen as a trend propagated by large corporations' marketing coups over the past 60 years. Things like MTV promote a generation that doesn't really care about 'thinking' and we have the public consensus in the US that 'Smart people are lame and dorky, let's not be smart'. That certainly isn't something that happen to a species because of evolution - over the thousands of years of our recent development, it's always been the smartest ones that multiply the most, meanwhile the unintelligent ones of the society die out. This is no longer the case since modern society has started to take root in the world. Now, since the world mentality is so socialistic, thinking that everybody has the right to live and the right to multiply that we have our current stage of the human race. This current stage of the human race is de-evolving due to the fact that the ones with the weakest DNA are generally the poorest, and thus have the most children; also its the intelligent humans of today that have the least offspring, this is diametrically opposed to all of evolution of all life up until modern society has taken root. So it really seems that we have a problem in our society right now if this is true, right? Well, not quite. It turns out that it is very beneficial for the wealthier individuals to have around many people to essentially act as consumers to buy the products of the producers/wealthy/intelligent. It is interesting to ponder that this may be the original cause for our mentality of Right-of-Life and Right-of-Reproduction. *Note* I am definitely not saying that the weakest of society should be killed, but rather they should be encouraged to not produce as much for the benefit of the human race - also, there should be more encouragement for the healthiest individuals in society to reproduce. I think that all of the current science that we have been seeing points towards this hypothesis for the current model and stage of Human Evolution. Is anybody else thinking the same thing?

We all know by now how our government can put a twist on wars, going back to the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine-American_W ar It makes perfect sense to start out with small bits of propaganda to slowly win the publics opinion, that way we (the public) wont even realize it has happened. I'm also not saying that China is perfect, neither was Iraq. But Iraq was much better off 7 years ago. I feel sorry for Iraq, I don't want to have to feel sorry for China in a few years.
