How can you say low cost when you guys hired 38 additional employees? Why couldn't you do it with the current staff? Is the price difference from a *licensed* distro worth all that hourly/salary wage, taxes, health care, insurance?
I get more *support* from Google than any distributor can provide. In other section of my University, they call support for the stupidiest things like compiling problems, tape problems, its ridculous!! Why get support when it will be Apu on the other line?
Here's what you do:
1. Hire 1-5 high school Linux geeks part-time.
2. Pay them 15-20k a year. They will rejoice! Sweeten the deal with an unlimited supply of Twinkies, Mountain Dew and Hot Pockets.
3. Sit back.
4. In your next conference with the big cheese, tell him how smart you are for solving the company's IT problems.
I've had a dual G4 Mac for almost a year. Still to THIS DAY I have yet to get NFS and NIS working on the machine. OS X is painfully slow even on this dual. Good thing for me its a dual boot with Debian PPC.
Just the other day, I installed Yellow Dog 3.0. NOW this sucker is blazingly fast. AND I put OS X where it belongs, in a window with Mac On Linux;)
Good point. Being the only computer savy person in my family I get the calls on a frequent basis. The other day, I had to *fix* the laptop I gave my father because it was infected. He is the type of person who is only online long enough to check his email. To have his laptop infected by this worm in that short amount of time is dumbfounding.
Luckily I have a good network at work and completely updated/patched his laptop in about 2 hours (thanks to windowsupdate being so friggin slow).
Do you really expect Ma and Pa Kettle to have their systems patched? When was the last time you tried to download 57 Critical Updates and 4 Service Packs with a dialup connection from a stock Win2k/XP install with each requiring a reboot?
A company here in San Antonio that sells power cells. I didn't delve into it until I saw a episode on DIY TV about solar cells, what to buy, how to install it. It was very, very good. I am sure you can get the transcript if you goto the DIY website.
Oh cmon!! Its natural for journalism to delve into a story for sheer *thrill*, THEN report the facts after the fact on page 18 in small print three days later.
After this incident I think all of us need to consider some kind of other power source than electricity. For about 10k you can get enough panels to power a small house. For another 5-10k, you'll have enough power to sell *back* to your local power company. You can easily get your money back in 1-2 years.
Personally, I spent $800 on a moderate 10w solar cell, cables, power invertor, deep cycle battery and assorted switches to power an outdoor shed. It would have cost twice that much to run electricity to it. Now I have enough power to run all my power tools and a few lights.
HA!! I thought something was fishy because it was supposedly a high ranking member of the subway system and here he is on ABC advertising a website. Gotta love those yankers!
With all these TV stations supposedly broadcasting live (all stations so far with all cams in NYC), if there is NO power HOW are they broadcasting? Batteries, generators?
I think it was the 2nd biggest hack in history. Thanks Kevin!!
We need to add one more thing to Slashback: Everyone's favorite Star Wars Kid is suing the friends who posted his super killer loser video on the Kazaa network for $100,000. You can read the story here on BBC News.
I have to whole heartedly agree. We put in a service request form and we have to explictedly explain we need 100mbit, full-duplex. If we just say "we need a new line in this lab", it'll be 10mbit, half-duplex. THEN, this is the kicker, if we DO specify full-duplex we have to force the NIC in the computer to full-duplex. This is a constantly frustrating problem since you would ASSUME all the above.
I am in IT in a department at a major medical University. I help researchers and students constantly install Linux on their machines because they finally see the benefits of Linux.
On numerous occasions, the people in charge of networking come to me crying (seriously), CRYING because I have installed Linux on peoples machines.
From BLAST to DNA analysis software, Linux is highly supreme in our environment strictly for cost. That's right, I said it, COST. There are freely available *nix based software that runs circles around software, for Windows, that costs in the ten's of thousands of dollars. Plus these researchers can utilize our Beowulf to do their research much faster. And did I mention ALL these utilities are freely available?
From my perspective, Linux is KING in research. And that is where it's always been.
Maybe they are suing because this is the only good employment offered in prisons? And the companies make a killing (no pun intended) by using prison labor. They have to keep 'Bubba' happy!
Sounds strikingly familiar to NUBUS.

There ya go, NOW your thinking straight!
As long as I can get my Moose Drool, my money will always go into the Montana economy ;)
Lets all refresh our history lesson and remember this deregulation was passed by the Clinton administration.

Last report from Possum Lake was they have plenty of beer and duct tape to repair the faulty generators.

BTW, power is JUST fine in Texas ;)

Those menus work fine with Konqueror 3.1.3.
Took Mark's advice and letter and sent my $199 in fake money. I wonder if I'll get a thank you letter? If I get anything back, I'll frame it ;)
them they can BLOW ME ??
Hmmm.. Anonymous... I take that like I do a grain of salt if you don't have the balls to reply with your nic.
Well shit, I just found the story today. My utmost apologize to the slashback community. I hereby expect flamebait to my toes.
