    Are you a Software Pirate?

The term "software piracy" actually covers several types of activities. Most people think the term covers only those activities where individuals intentionally copy and distribute counterfeit software, offer copies of software for download over the Internet ("warez"), and/or distribute hacked software (illegal adjustment of code in a program to avoid registration and/or expiration dates). While those activities are indeed piracy, check yourself by looking at the following list.

In addition to the above, you could be labeled a software pirate if:

You load software on more than one computer when the software license expressly states that the license is only valid for one computer.

You do not have the documentation to support the fact that the software you are using is licensed. Save those receipts and documents!

You share your program with a friend and allow installation on your friend's computer.

You borrow software from work and install it on your home computer.
Even software that you purchase, or that comes preloaded on your PC could actually be illegal software distributed by a disreputable OEM or reseller. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software is a special version permitted only to be preloaded on PCs at the manufacturer or bundled with PC hardware. OEM copies of software should never be sold or purchased separately.

The BSA estimates that there are 840,000 Internet sites selling illegal software as the real thing. It's easy to create an e-commerce site these days that looks reputable and legitimate or sell software on an online auction site. These sites and sellers usually come and go quickly and leave behind hundreds of dissatisfied customers. Be sure you only purchase online from a well-known retailer, or thoroughly check out the company offering the software before purchasing.

How does the BSA find software pirates, and what do they do with them?
