I use search engines to answer questions and provide information, not to wade through huge piles of noise. The number of results returned is a terrible measure of search engine quality.

I would like to see a signal to noise ratio.

That said, an unscrupulous salesperson could probably implement someway to bypass the WGA test easily as well.

I'd assume Microsoft doesn't care if Wine is considered genuine or not. It can certainly be annoying for legitimate Windows users, so I would assume the test errors on the side of not-hassling the user.

Although the article is slashdoted, I can speculate on this from the other comments I have read and my knowledge from my 3d graphics engine hobby programming.

As I understand it, OpenGL applications will be implemented through D3D when AeroGlass is running. Since AeroGlass is based on D3D, it is impossible for OpenGL to co-exist in the D3D composited desktop... however..

OpenGL-based applications will still work exactly as they used to in fullscreen mode!

That said, it would be nice to see the OpenGL->D3D conversion layer support extensions and more advanced OpenGL functionality. I'd assume if Cedega can implement D3D9 with OpenGL, Microsoft can implement OpenGL with D3D.

There are Xbox system link tunneling tools that enable emulation of a system link online, but introduce latency that the Halo networking code chokes to death on.

Halo 1 was popular because it was just so much damn fun to play in any sort of multiplayer fasion (1 on 1 or 8 on 8, it is all great). Multiplayer has been around far longer than internet play.

That said: online play is a great help for people sans real friends to play with.

As stated in my sig, I don't hate Microsoft. Initially, I was shocked by this /. article, but after a little bit of thought, I could see this as being a very reasonable change.

    Hear me out...

Microsoft buys Claria/Gator/whatever-it-is. Microsoft shuts down the server that collected the stollen customer information. The "spy" part of the spyware is now completely harmless. Additionally, Microsoft may have examined the source code and discovered that it's installation makes some change to Windows that may be dangerous to undo. An ad-supported application could cease to function, or worse.

As this spyware is effectively no longer spying, it is less of a threat and removal of it could be potentially problematic, so the default should be the safest choice: ignore.

I may be wrong, but I think this is a perfectly logical and moral change.
