Star Destroyer Built Before Your Eyes

hardcoredreamer writes "These people spent 10 hours constructing their very own Imperial II-class Star Destroyer from LEGO and capturing over 7000 frames of the process with their webcam. The images were encoded with divx5 and are available to download in a 4 minute .avi. mirror 1 , mirror 2 , mirror 3."

    I love how the damned link was /.-ed before there were even any comments. All said, it sounds like a pretty cool endeavor-- even though I can't see it. :)

      Nice early troll for a +5 insightful, but the site currently works well and I'm pulling 90KB/s off the video... Unfortunately, I can't host a torrent when I finish. If it goes down, maybe someone who can will post an e-mail address.

      I pulled it off mirror three. The slowest transfer rate I saw was 362 kB/s. Not bad for a comcast connection.

      Always use mirror dot or coralc cache. If you are a regular /. reader, please install and use coralize greasemonkey script or slashdot cache gm script.

      These days I have my mod_proxy url_rewrite check for HTTP_REFERRER and rewrite to nyud.net URLS

      Of course Windows XP supports playing back video. Don't be silly.

      What Windows XP in it's default configuration DOESN'T support is playing back DivX encoded video.

      In frame 313, you can clearly see his head move BACK, and to the LEFT! BACK, and to the LEFT! BACK, and to the LEFT!!

      But in frame 301 you can see his head move FORWARD and to the RIGHT, meaning the airbourne Lego brick came from behind him and to the left of him -- thus creating the recoil you saw in frame 313. Reports say Chewbacca was standing in a similar location. I believe we have a wookie to start questioning!.

      Was that a female....building a starwars model from lego. and it looks to me like she did it fast then the two guys. Good show to the makes of the vid it was a good waste fo a few minutes.

    This would have been far more interesting if:
    A) it had not come as a kit with all the parts in neat little bags
    B) They had not kept looking at the instructions.

    Putting together legos using the manuals really doesn't take that much does it? Now a to scale ISD out of 3m expanding foam carved with a hot wire and plumbed with LEDs .. now that would be cool AND you could float it on a pond.

      Yes , but you know how many problems are caused by people not RTFM .
      That said , LEGO models like this are just collectors pieces for display(I have about 50), I make other models from my spare LEGOs going by models and so on this is where the real fun is. Designing and building your own .
      If you pay 300 (I have seen this kit go for anything from 200-400 roughly) then your not going to want to risk losing pieces

      Are you kidding me? Dude, that thing's massive!!! They had to even stop and EAT during it's construction. Doing that without a little guidance is a bit nuts.

      But still, the guy gets geek points for doing it in under 5 minutes AND he had a chick help (minus 10 geek points if the chick was his sister / relative).

      I was expecting something different...

      It would have been more interesting if they started at the bottom and glued the first section to the table. They could have made a time-lapse animation of it being built a few pieces at a time.

      Erm, the design of the model's kinda prohibitive; it has an inner framework and panels that attach to the outside. It'd be like a navel ship designer starting at the bottom and building the frame at the same time as they built the outer panels; while the ship might get built, it's horribly inefficient if the work is divided up evenly, and might not even get the same expected outcome if a problem arrised during construction.

      Of course, I'm speaking in general engineering terms, but specifically, you have to turn the thing over to attach the bottom panels. Also, while applying the larger body panels, a certain amount of force is acceptable, and too much could certainly break the model, especially if trying a bottom up approach as you pointed out.

      Don't get me wrong, it'd be hella cool, it's just not feasable :-/

      Several years back I got the last model of the LEGO Supercar 8880 (black open frame, all-wheel drive and suspension) and it took me over 12 hours to construct it. I was amazed that I spent a whole day on it, having never built a model of that complexity.

      I have to agree about pre-designed models being counter to the core LEGO idea. I left the car together for years, then finally took it apart and haven't done anything with the pieces since.

      Some Lego, especially the more kid orientated stuff, ie. pirate ships, bionicle, duplo and most smaller kits, etc, can be done without even so much at a glance at the instructions.

      I think for kits as large as the Star Destroyer you do need to look at the instructions at least a little, at one stage late in the video they hadn't assembled the top turret of the ship correctly - thus they had to look again and attach some pieces they'd forgot.

      When I was a kid I assembled a lot of Lego Technic kits, the ones with a lot of gears and moving parts. Completing a large technic kit without instructions is near enough Impossible. Most of the larger technic models are totally screwed up if a few pieces are out of place, due to the nature of the gears, shafts etc.

      I was given the Back Hoe excavator LEGO technics set. It's both technics and pneumatic. Even with the instructions it took several sessions and I got the piping wrong. Some of these big sets would be difficult unless you're a very experienced LEGO builder.

      I built one.

      It's terribly complex and if one didn't look at the instructions you couldn't do it.

      For me, sorting the parts by type/size was a good 25% of the build time and effort.

      It took a solid ten hours of work *AND* there was a chick in it. Think about it. A chick helpin a dude build a Lego Star Wars model. I find it hard to believe you weren't sitting there watching that vid going "I wish I was that guy!" :)

      Even then there is a considerable difference. Since VAT (comparable to sales tax) is arround 19%. this would explain only half of it.

      They have a "huge" version, at original quality on their webserver. 31 megabytes. Just downloaded that and averaged at around 150 kB/s.

      I agree. These guys deserve SOME applause, even though they're getting slashdotted at almost 5 am. Wait for the morning crowd. ^_^

      The video is hosted on his university account, not his blog ISP account. Universities are known for having web server farms and more bandwidth than $god.

      I think it's pretty unusual for a university (not departmental) web server be slashdotted. I don't remember that ever happening.

    Have you ever wondered why geeks do all kinds of impossible and silly things ?. It's my theory that geeks without any problems will create some of his own - like I don't have my own star destroyer made out of lego or my kernel should blink SOS using keyboard lights when it oops() (etc..). My programming guru has recently taken up buidling models too - crazy I tell ya !.

    Considering how cool the dark side is recently - I'd have thought someone would've built the death star too - with a Nuetrino torpedos here in neon ?.

      impossible does not mean, contrary to popular thought, that a task cannot be completed under any circumstances whatsoever. it means that a task cannot be accomplished "in the nature of things," or that it is insuperably difficult given the circumstances.

      The professor that got me into regex, who, interestingly enough, was a professor of medieval French, told me, "You'll know you've gotten carried away when you start thinking of problems to solve."

      That is the difference between most geeks and most athletes. With the exception of perhaps moutain climbers, most athletes have others propose the problem-task and then they craft the solution-performance.

      Did it at least go behind a mountain before breaking back into it's component blocks? If not, then it's not a true Airwolf model.

      I used to watch that show and not only did Airwolf always rise out of a mountain but every other helicopter that was shot would always fly behind a mountain before exploding.

      I'm not exactly sure what purpose mountains have with the life cycle of helicopters but they do play a significant part in the birth and death of them.

      Yeah, this is about the lamest thing I've seen on SD. It's like watching a stop-motion movie of someone building a deck, or assembling a bike. Big Deal! If I was 13 maybe I'd be impressed. No, I wouldn't. If I was 8 I would be. If it was build out of discarded AOL disks or gummybears with no instructions or someone made a 10 foot star destroyer out of jello then maybe then it would be newsworthy.

    Notice how the guy in the black T-shirt, who conveniently is facing away from the camera most of the time, switches from right-handed to left-handed and back again several times !

    I tought the video would show the 'growing' of the Destroyer. Instead I see a lot of hands that at the end somehow produce a Destroyer. Although the building is nice, the movie is not really worth looking at.

    First the whole instructions thing. That is a custom Lego set, it could be built without instructions but the speeded up version would take 11 hours to watch.

    Second, I regret to inform you that you must attend geek retraining classes. Astronomy is a very small subset of geekitude. This video is Lego AND Star Wars, it not only trumps astronomy, it eclipses it.

    Finally, and this one might come as a shocker, Slashdot is not CNN. If you want in depth continuing coverage of a story that is of interest to you then Slashdot isn't and never was the place you are looking for. Go to an astronomy site and read all about it to your heart's content.

    It never ceases to amaze me that so many supposedly 'smarter than the average bear' people can't grasp the simple concept that Slashdot is mostly a tool to save you the time and trouble of surfing all over the net every day looking for technology news __you haven't heard about yet__. If you already know about a news item then you don't need Slashdot to inform you of its existence. I said mostly a tool because Slashdot is also part entertainment where people can try to make stupid jokes about the news and slam Microsoft in new and creative ways.

    If I go and sit in my car, and put a CD in the CD player, it plays. Simple. If I open a movie file on one of my laptops, running Linux, or even my elderly Mac, it just plays the damn movie. I shouldn't have to go and find codecs and stuff to get it to work.

    I am not normally one to complain about the stories here, but this got me hyped up over nothing.

    I can't believe I just downloaded a video (from a seemingly registration required tracker, forced to use the DHT) in which 2 people bought a boxed set of legos with instructions on exactly how to build an ISD with the exact right peices straight from LEGO.

    I completely expected a home brew type lego creation. And instead I got a packaged deal.

    Next on slashdot, 2 guys build a complete FORD Truck!!! (webcam inside Ford factory showing 2 workers managing the robots building a truck)

    This bastardizing of English knows no limits. It has come to Slashdot, too.

    For a few years now, popular media have been using the word "before" where "in front of" was supposed to be used.

    Maybe they are lazy and think 'I want one word, not three', but "before" ia strictly for describing precedence in time.

    The Star Destroyer is a benchmark of construction in some Lego circles. Groups get together to speed-build the thing. A few years back I saw one put together in a little over an hour. (Wired News)

    Funny, I thought when they called it the Imperial II Star Destroyer in the writeup, the class of Star Destroyer was rather clear. You know, since Imperial II is one of the classes of Star Destroyer and all. But now I'm just feeding the troll/karmawhore, so I think I'll stop.
