Come on now...You can't seriously blame the parents. If it were a 5 year old releasing a virus, then yeah, mommy and daddy shoulda been watchin a little more closely. But while writing a virus isn't the most difficult task in the world, It is complex enough to require a person to be of a certain age/intellect. And at that age/intellect, a person should no longer require the constant supervistion of their parents. Our first exposure to morality/ethics is instilled by our parents, true...but once we get out into the world, our entire environment and personality affect our morals. In some cases the 'blame the parents' idea is correct, but when you start throwing it around in a situation such as this, it becomes yet another 'blame someone else' bit. Bottom line, the sole responsibility for these rest on the shoulders of the person who released the virus.
Don't automatically assume free (as in beer), just because of the GPL license. Remeber, a GPL'd piece of software _can_ be charged for, as long as the source is included or available to all parties.
The key for me is trying to stay organized. I tend to get ovewhelmed and lost in paperwork/deadlines/stuff I don't want to do.
I found a nice system that works for me, and luckily, I have a great boss who recognises my problems, and helps to facilitate them. ( It probably makes a difference that his son has been diagnosed with ADHD, and therefore, he knows about it. )
I have a system that helps me to make sure I don't get too distracted. At the beginning of each week, me and my boss go over my weekly/long-term projects, and decide which ones are gunna be done that week. I then enter them into iCal on my laptop, print out a list of everything for the week, and decide which project I will work on each week. I then go further, by using my two cork-boards in my office. I put all tasks that need to be finished that day on one corckboard, in order of priority (Board A), and then put the long-term projects that are to be finished that week on the second board (in order of importance) (Board B).
As the day goes, I work through each task on Board A, and when I get bored/finished with those tasks, I work on the tasks from Board B. The key to making this system work, is that EVERY task, no matter how menial, goes onto board A if it must be done today.
Another thing that helps me alot is the fact that I'm a smoker, it gives me a chance to get out of the office. Although, it doesn't much help to go out with the other smokers, so I go out alone and take a walk during my smoke breaks.
Also, We have a weekly meeting where we go over my progress/projects, where my boss rattles off areas i need to work on, as well as areas I have improved in. Which is probably the most helpful, as I find myself needing alot of reminding;-)
Hope this helps, it sure has helped me. Of course, havinga boss that's willing to work with you, helps alot too.
Someone was going to say it.... Why FTP? There is no need for it any more. There is a very long history of remote root exploits and other vulnerabilities. Just use sftp. Ya, so the users complain about it, but they'll get over. The University [colorado.edu] I attend recently switch from Telnet/ftp to ssh. If we can convert 30,000+ users, so can you:)
I agree, I also recently made the switch from ftp to sftp/ssh. I thought the users would have a fit, however, I found a great sftp client called 'FileZilla', which most of my users actaully prefer to their old ftp client.
It's a wonderful client, and easy to use. I reccomend it for anyone interested in the switch, and making it easy for users.
try it here
And, of course, this software is free (beer/speech), so you should be the most popular guy with the CFO for reccomending it!
Note: I am not affiliated with Filezilla, I just think it's a great tool.
They are talking about a Pocket-PC, not a PDA...Palm is great for a PDA, but lets face it, as a general multi-use OS, it sucks. The range of tasks that can be accomplished by something such as WinCE/PocketPC OS is much wider than that of Palm. Try using each one of them, and you'll find that you do indeed have more 'PC-Like' features in non-Palm-OS pda's.
.Org is just one shining example of how large organizations are beginning to lean toward open source, not necessarily in support of open source ideals, but because it's simply better quality.
So,.NET would be just one shining example of what?
Well, in that case, What does the label actually own? The byte-sequence of the song? If so, then once you compress it to mp3, the sequence is changed, does the label still own it? after all, it's been changed. Or does the label own the actual sound frequencie's etc. In this case, you do lose some quality during mp3 compression, so it's no longer the same sound either. So, I guess all they have left is the musical composition and words. My only question I guess is EXACTLy what part of the "song" is owned by the label/artist/whatever.
I see that they want to only allow you to store a TV program for x number of days. How are they going to regulate this when I buy my TV-Tuner Card, and record my program using an Open Source piece of software that I can see the source to, and take out what I don't want. Also, what are they going to do if I use my old 3dfx card to hook my DVD player, and record my DVD's that way? The are just two instances. Can anyone think of anymore?
Not everyone has a Mac that'll run OS X, yes, it's a good, pretty OS, but Aqua can be a HUGE memory hog(which is why it looks so pretty), so this is just an alternative. We can make i lightweight, and still have the powerful un*x console.
When I was in high school, I too refused to stand for the pledge, it was mostly becasue of the fact that I was a "rebel" and that was enough for me. However, For this, i was kicked out of class, and eventually sent home from school. That evening my mother called our attourney and had him write a note to school demanding I be allowed back into class with no persecution or discrimination based on my reluctancy, and so went. My reccomendation to anyone expiriencing this problem, is consult a lawyer, they are happy to have such an easy lawsuit against a school and get the publicity. And you teachers tend not to mess with you afterwards. When I become a parent, I can only hope my child decides to excersive theri rights where they feel fit. Isn't that after-all, what america is all about???
(Sorry for Ameri-centric, but look at the damn headline:-))
I find this hard to believe, seeing as if I were to walk outside my office right now, and make a mark like that, when I come back in the morning, the janitors would have cleaned it. This is going on hte assumption that it wouldn't be done before I leave today.
And what of rain? Will these "magic markings" stay through rain?
Some more permenant solution is needed. One that can be kept readable for slightly longer, but still isn't destructive/ugly.
This, in my opinion, is why the web is much better suited for this type of thing. A site with a giant database of places you can get your WiFi fix.
Posting instructions on how to cook meth (which harms no-one) is a reasonable exercise of one's first amendment rights. But posting instructions on how to derail passenger trains, how to build C-4 bombs, or how to permanently destroy a woman's mink coat is inexcusable and deserves no protection.
On the contrary, cooking meth does indeed harm many people. Have you ever seen one of those meth houses explode? It's not a pretty sight. Not to mention, this means that home-made, test-batches of meth will end up on the streets possibly killing these idiots.
"I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
I don't see the part in this that says "As long as I deem it appropriate, and can somehow justify it to myself."
I find it sad that the internet, which first started out as a place to -share- information has now turned into a place who's sole purpose is to -sell- information. What next? I guess the Golden Rule strikes again 'He who has the goal, makes the rules'
Nothing disturbs an end user more then when you email them their old password
So, you're saying that users are the problem because htey don't select decent passwords, yet you email their password in _clear-text_ over the network? That makes alot of sense.
I was faced with the same question as you. Only a few years earlier. I opted out of half my high school career in favor of college, so at the age of 16, I was in college. I, like you, wanted to be a Systems Administrator, and found that they don't really prepare you much for it in the computer science program(at least not my school), so I just started working as a Lab Assistant and made a hostal takeover of the linux servers from my former boss;-). Best move I ever made. This expirience got me the job I have now. I am a UNIX Systems Administrator, no schooling, a high school dropout with no certs. It can be done, if you know your shit. I still take 2 night classes every year because I enjoy them, but I'm making plenty of money, and am not worrying about my future at this itme. It worked for me, you're story may be different, bottom line, do what you wanna do, not what other poeple tell you to do.

Actually, I always pictured Ozzy Osborne as Zaphod. I mean, come on... THIS is Zaphod. He's got the glasses, the personality, and the accent.
In other news, shipmakers have launched a new 'un-sinkable' ship today, and dubbed her 'The Titanic'...more to come...
