  1. Read Google Print's FAQ on Authors Guild Sues Google Over Print Program · · Score: 1

From the FAQ about Google Print:

"..Then you can direct buyers to your site, add your brand to the Google Print page, and begin earning revenue from contextual advertising -- even for out-of-print books. Learn more here. "

Google shares Ad Revenue with the publishers. Thus elminating any, "Google is just doing this to make a huge profit" claims. Granted Google may be making a profit, but if they are sharing it with the publishers, why should the Author's Guild care then? Also if you search Google print, there are just links on the actual page with the book as to where you can buy it. And, if I'm reading correctly, the publisher can control what links are on the page to where you can buy the book. It looks like a win-win situation for everyone involved to me and I think the Author's Guild needs to just get over it.

  2. Did anyone else read that wrong at first? on How Can Tech Help Fight Education Costs? · · Score: 1

I saw education and I placed the word "Teach" instead of "Tech" in my mind, I guess because of word association, and I was like "WTF? Crazy Slashdot editors", but then I was like oh, "Tech"!

Haha, public education at its finest.

  3. My PDA is better than a PSP. on PSP Hacks and the Mainstream · · Score: 1, Insightful

My ipaq has bluetooth, wireless, an SD card slot which I can buy new memory for $70/Gig, I can encode movies in wmv and fit several hours of very good quality(360kbps) video. I can do thousands of more things than the PSP and it costs me $320. Sure the PSP has a bigger, better screen, but my ipaq rx3115 fits perfectly in my pocket and I can use it in public without causing a lot of attention. The only other thing the PSP has is better games, but the pocketpc selection suits my tastes. I just don't get where the PSP is so "revolutionary". I can do everything and so much more on my pda. In order to get the same functionality in the PSP I would have to spend several times more than my PDA costs just to buy memory sticks and deal with sony proprietary crap. It just doesn't seem worth it to me. I'm not trolling I swear. Someone just explain this phenomenon to me and how it rivals pdas or tablet pcs because I just don't see it personally.

  4. This is just more of the new Microsoft Trend on Two Reviews of Microsoft AntiSpyware · · Score: 1

Historically, Microsoft has produced products that have bugs, are unstable, and just down right annoying, BUT it seems ever since the release of XP Service pack 2 that Microsoft is heading in a new direction, and I like their efforts. Look at Service Pack 2, they finally woke up and are trying to add in more core functionality and stability to the operating system. True, there are several bugs, but when you are programming for something that runs a vast array of software and hardware, most of which is very old in the average computer user sector of the public, there are going to be bugs, no way around it. Then you have this spyware tool. Sure it isn't perfect, but they label it as Beta 1 and they aren't putting it out there as a finished product. Its pretty good for a free tool. I, for one, appreciate the fact that at least Microsoft appears to be trying to move forward instead of standing still. I mean like it or not, they control 95% of the consumer market. They could very well just sit back and say screw it, we aren't going to be innovative or add new functionality at all. I mean what would happen? People stop using Windows and switch over to linux or mac? Not likely. While their are other alternatives, their are people still out there that believe internet explorer IS the internet. The general populus is not as informed as the slashdot crowd. I guess my overall point is that I'm starting to like Microsoft more these days. Of course, I'll probably be modded down and flamed for this whole post, but go ahead do your worst.

  5. New meaning to remote security? on Internet Hunting · · Score: 1

I can just see it now. Some crazy person could set up a remote security system with this technology and shoot burglars upon entry. Where to people come up with this stuff? Technology is crazy these days. I mean there are even remotes that find the remotes these days. I want to know what you can't do remotely these days. Not much really. You can pretty much automate your entire house by sitting anywhere in the world. Kind of scary really.

  6. Can't beat Winamp for Visualizations on Winamp Down for the Count · · Score: 1

I have a 100" projection screen and I use Winamp for its Visualization Plugins. There are some plugins that only are made for winamp. Therefore, despite the fact that I can play the files on any itunes, vlc, windows media, etc., Winamp still rocks for visualizations. The big ones like G-Force work in iTunes as well, but for sheer variety and number of plugins Winamp is still the king. I dare you to find a program that tops Winamp in this area. Actually I'd look forward to finding anything that could.

  7. Media center extender functionality is in SP2 on Microsoft Bringing TV to Xbox · · Score: 5, Interesting

If everyone would stop the microsoft bash train and look for a second they would see that if you would update to SP2 and Media Center 10 you can download a update called Media Center Connect, which lets Windows Media Player 10 connect wirelessly to any UPnP device. Why is this cool? Because thats what they are doing to the XBOX. Making it a UPnP Device. Which means I can access my 250 gig hard drive that is full of TV shows legally captured with my ATI card and play them back at random without more wires. Its actually a cool little product. Media Center 10 will play every format you can throw at it but OGG, which no one uses, and AAC, which is the apple standard, but thats like 2% of the total digital media market. Get with the program people. Microsoft isn't that bad. I run Windows XP for weeks at a time, only to turn it off to upgrade a piece of hardware or something like that.

  8. This is no different from third party ipod apps on Real Networks Hacks iPod; .rm & Real Store for iPod · · Score: 1

There are several third-party apps that provide all the functionality of Itunes that allow for syncing to the Ipod and even have ratings and volume adjustments and all those itunes features and Apple has never said anything about any of those. They obviously have to have some idea of how the Ipod database works to get those apps working, its probably just the same thing here going on with Real. I don't see why this should cause any DMCA violations.

Perfect digital copies, no commericals, nothing. I don't have HDTV but I can download the broadcasts. I mean there were copies of the entire superbowl in HDTV floating around. The cat is already out of the bag people. TiVo isn't going to do anything to this scene that already exists...

  11. Remastering of Movies on THX-1138: The (Digitally Enhanced) Director's Cut · · Score: 2, Insightful

When does it all end? I mean are we going to digitally enhance everything to death? While we're at it why not go back and redo every movie ever made. It seems like with DVDs these days you can go back and stick 5 hours of extras and 50 extra discs and call it a collectors edition and everyone scrambles to get it. I personally agree with the South Park creators on this one. Remastering is an exercise in futility. As Kyle said, "When an artist creates, whatever they create belongs to society". Thats my philosophy.

  13. If Michael Moore wants it this way... on Moore Approves Fahrenheit 9/11 Downloads · · Score: 2, Insightful

Then why doesn't he release a decent copy of his movie on the internet to begin with. This copy that everyone is getting the torrent for is not only a really crappy cam version, from what I've read elsewhere it is not even a complete copy of the film. Its missing the whole bit about the Patriot Act from what I hear. At least put out decent stuff if you want people to view it.

  14. The way I see the future of music. on Replace Your Music....Again · · Score: 1

With the current prices of hard drives decreasing everyday and the current capacity increasing, what would be the best is a dockable drive. Picture this. You have a dockable drive about the size of an ipod. $100 for 100gigs, not infeasible, not too expensive either. With this dockable drive, you can pop it in a kiosk in a store and download whatever you want on it, in any format you want. Now this kiosk is going to be hooked up to a private highspeed gigabit network that has the entire music catalog on it. With this dockable drive you could then pop it in your car dash, pop it in your home stereo system, and pop it in your portable player. All your music, Everywhere you go, compatibility with everything.

Here's the deal with the burns. You can only burn the same playlist 10 times. So say you download 20 tracks from the music store. You can only burn those 20 in that exact same order 10 times, but if you switch the 1st and 2nd song you get 10 more burns and so on and so forth. I've also heard you can just delete the playlist and create a new one, but I'm not sure if that works or not. Anyhow heres how Steve Jobs puts it. Unlimited burning of individual tracks, 10 burns per playlist.
