Homer: Awww... 20 dollars!? I wanted a peanut.
Homer's brain: 20 dollars can buy many peanuts!
Homer: Explain how.
Homer's brain: Money can be exchanged for goods and services!
Homer: Woo hoo!
Would it be possible to hack an adsl/cable router to be used as a simple webserver? For a low traffic and static site it would be perfect for my business website hosting needs. 10watts consumption...fanless operation...and small footprint it sounds like a dream! I could even imagine other hacks like interfacing a larger amount of flash storage or running a real low end db &scripting engine to have behaviour like mysql/php3 together.
In australia there was a big thing about the largest carrier preventing number porting. Our consumer watchdog (ACCC) got onto the case and made things start to happen which was good for us consumers!
Here is a report detailing what the ACCC requested from the ACA (australian communications authority) to look into number porting for australian carriers.
What sort of level do the school techs usually have?
All the techs i have worked with have excellent skills and have alot of initiative....granted our networks are predominantly NT based but i can honestly say there are a bunch of very good tech's! Mac's used to be the big thing at our region but now its predominately w2k/nt plus a mix of linux servers handling proxy/firewall/webservices. I honestly dont know much about mac's myself (being predominately an expert in nt and AIX/Solaris), but we had a teacher recently join and me n the tech struggled to get this thing connected (we worked it out after an hour). This powerbook was running os9 and we found that we couldnt join a domain and let it run normally like any other wintel machines (It probably can but apple help/call centre were of no use and we just happen to know someone who gave us a couple of hints!). Maybe its possible on OSX but until apple's can join a domain like one can in windows/linux environments.
(if there is a way to join a domain would someone please direct me to the appropriate documentation!)
I thought by now products like dragon dictate would be mainstream and be able to fully take over the role of a keyboard....but in recent times i havent heard much about them.
pity that they dont actually fix the roads

so all that money and time upgrading our reliable nt4/2k systems is only for iis6 and a pop3 service?

In melbourne australia we have an abandoned underground system from ww2 that was apparently used by the american military as the secret operating base in the event of australia being invaded by japan. Apparently there is a whole city underneath melbourne that has been "forgotten" and closed shut. There are discrete entrances everywhere around melbourne but unfortunately they are all barricated up or very hard to pick out!
It is a sad day for such a beautiful chip which inspired ulsi and even the humble k7 series athlon chips. The alpha chip was indeed a work of art. I remember the day when i first saw one humming away running nt4(of all programs) and the 64bit slots on the mb that it was on!/me plays the final salute song:`(
