  1. Reboot!? on Live CD for PC Games? · · Score: 1

So... I am going to reboot my machine to play a game? And how can I save my progress? And wouldn't it be dead slow unless I could cache the entire CD in RAM, but then I would need a lot more than 1GB, to leave some for the game...

Most drivers ARE included with Windows XP. However, most of them are fairly generic, and they can't support devices that didn't exist at the time.

All but my Audigy2 sound card got sound instantly upon installing WindowsXP. And 32-bit colour too. But it depends on what the drivers support.

I think that it uses 16-bit colour in most instances, and it advices a resolution of 800x600 upon startup. It does however fall back to 640x480x4@60 when there is no driver support available.

I have trouble getting my monitor to do 1600x1200@85hz in Linux, but in WindowsXP all I have to do is drag a slider. I know I should generate a modeline with a modeline generator somewhere on the WWW, but that's a lot worse than grabbing a .exe and double-clicking it.

And I am glad to get fresh drivers from the vendors website upon a new installation. It is like compiling a new kernel or doing "emerge -u nvidia-glx".

And if you like somone else managing your computer, you can use C-net's update thingy.

Many CD recorders support the "overburn" feature, meaning you can squeeze a bit extra information onto a disc. I'm not sure how much, but I have gotten 10MB with no problems. It works with Nero burning ROM for Windows and xcdroast for GNU/Linux, and probably others as well.

And it works in all players I've tested it in.

There is no need to compile a kernel, you can use binaries of anything you want. Get a generic kernel for RedHat, Slackware, Debian or whatever distribution you install.

I can undertand this comment when it comes to KDE, or GNOME 1.4. But the GNOME 2.2 desktop's greatest advantage is its streamlined interface, and ease of use.

I'm amazed by how GNOME now "just works", and EVERYTHING on my desktop is useful. My menus aren't cluttered with a million "rar this" or "zip this folder and e-mail" entries.

And read about the Human Interface Guidelines which have gotten a large following in the Linux world. They are strictly followed by many GNOME developers(and others).

GNOME is easier than all versions of Windows, except Windows XP, IMHO. And there aren't many steps now required to install Mandrake og Redhat these days.

Linux uses OpenGL, while may games under Windows supports BOTH OpenGL and Direct3D.

In my experience, OpenGL can be faster, but when there is a lot of action, the frame rate drops much more than with Direct3D. This have been true with at least three PC's with different GeForce cards.

Also, the driver is really the Windows driver with some kind of HAL programmed for it. Also, Linux is built for more security, and the security and integrity checks make it all go slower.

I can only speak of my own experience with Gentoo Linux(which is supposed to be pretty fast if done right), and the speed I get in UT2k3 or NWN is nowhere near what I get in Windows. Sorry.

Heck, now the word "resolution" will start to have meaning! Instead of getting more small icons on your screen when going from 800x600 --> 1600x1200, you could get more detailed ones. And if it renders faster than PNG images, then we can have both great looks & high speed. Way to go! :D

We can have "Trusted archives" instead of paper copies. I beleive MS will do this, because there are a lot of money involved. I know my department will buy something like this.

And I do think it would be like a "layer of security", and an OS such as Linux could still be run, the Palladium features would just be left out.

But because of people yelling(like j00), and a lot of peoples distrust of MS, they won't dare to do something really bad.
