I absolutely agree, but what I'm referring to is the psychological state of the worker - if they're not doing what they know they're capable of doing, what does this do to their ability to be effective when fires errupt, or in general?

I think this books sounds interesting, perhaps echoing the Theory of Constraints and similar ideas. My only concern is (and this may be addressed in the book) - what is done to combat boredom, malaise, etc. in underutilized employees? This can very easily lead to undisciplined and less efficient employees when/if things are under the gun...seems to me it's a pretty fine balance.
make him a disenfranchised jewish cave man going to an egyptian treasure hunter school where he battles dinosaurs with pauly shore and you can add in school ties. but then, i'm an idiot.
Maybe I'm totally misreading this, but can we please stop it with the damn product placement? It seems that Slashdot has had a lot of these 'stories' up lately, be it an actual money-maker for OSDN or otherwise (most likely the case, since I don't think the editors even read half the stories). Not so much meant as a bitch, but more a cocern for whatever passes for journalistic standards around here.
I agree that donations to the world bank (worst waste of money ever) and pharmaceutical companies are lame (and highly suspect), but the Rockefeller foundation is pretty much a class act. If I remember correctly, JDR made most of his donations anonymously, and was it his son that started the foundation? Stinking memory failure...:(
i agree. michael is a raving blatherskite. it would be cool if we could suppress his idiotic comments without eliminating stories he posts altogether (if _this_ is even possible).
okay, i'll hold off on attacking canada for a few minutes.
i think the reason we don't have greater penetration of broadband in this country is aol. they've had a hell of a time getting access to broadband pipes (well, 'last mile' anyway), and god knows few of us in this country can live without the rich cultural experience that is aol.
excellent points. thanks

Back in the late 60's / early 60's
;) sorry, couldn't resist.
so you mean the sixties?
Did we just slashdot a ship?
So what format are they burning onto - CD, ARRRR?
god i'm so funny it hurts.
You're right, Fox isn't the best place on the planet to publish, but Glenn is a pretty smart guy, and his site Instapundit is excellent.
"slashdottin my site? thats a paddle'in" (jasper)
that's easily the funniest reference to the slashdot effect i've ever seen.
sam?
I presume they'll be looking for prison planets from now on?
oh c'mon, laugh.
Of course, if I had any journalistic standards I would have written "concern" instead of "cocern." God bless America, we're all screwed.

But I thought that was the job description for a CTO.
quiche eating Pascal programmers and Mac users
is this some new saying about geeks i'm not aware of? this has been showing up in the posts a lot lately.
The libraries are provided FREE of charge by the government. Therefore why shouldn't they be able to get the information on what books you have read.
Um, if by 'free of charge' you mean 'paid for by tax payers', then yes, libraries are 'free of charge'.
the cia wasn't founded until after rockefeller died, idiot.
yeah, that was funny when those chazwozzers destroyed your eco system.

Scary as it may be (and it is), Gates dated a lot of models in the eighties.
Apparently money really can blind people. [shudder]
Wow. Unicron and Galvatron not in agreement? Who woulda thunk it? :) (Sorry, couldn't resist the bizarre parallel)
