I know what you mean. With the (soccer) World Cup coming up, live action looking like it was being held in the next town, there is no sense of the globalness of it all. I remember the Mexico WC, for example, when I was a kid, with the telephone bandwidth commentary and o-so-blurry pictures. You *KNEW* that you were watching something from far away, with a magivcal quality that's missing today.

What does it matter? a. They are so out of touch, they wouldn't know a "pirate" if he painted a skull ) b. Sod them. If they *did* know the difference, if everyone totally ignores/rejects their demands and rants, and uses normal sane equipment, then what can they do? Lock everyone up? Just ignore them. They will stop when they see that they are not getting any attention. Oh, and don't buy any copy- protected crap.

The armchair method of planning that is suggested might work for a trip to the beach, but active preparation is the order of the day for, say an arctic expedition or a trek up a mountain. During the Apollo days (yes, I'm that old) the science was developed as the program itself advanced. True, there was the *competitive* nature of the space race to provide impetus, but aiting for everything to be developed first, and then getting in an off-the-shelf Mars Bus just won't happen. Because it is boring. Not in the aw-I'm-so-bored whiny way, but in the Public-has-no-interest-so-lets-quietly-spend-the-f unding-on
