this is great for gettin linux on the desktop, its great to see it happening and happening in general mainstream stores, distros like mandrake are good but they aren't coming on computers in the mainstream, ppl have to go out and get it themselves
it takes some gettin used to but after a few goes you really get into the hang of it, i dont use palms myself but i can see this being quite useful, the only real problem is screen size
i got used to it by doing 'I like cheese' and 'My name is Antony', if you haven't already i recommend downloading it to try, its a kool way ot use up a spare 5 mins!
slightly OT: slashdot should do this, anyone with 1,000 karma or more gets health insurance, or protection from negative karma forever
on topic: what does it cover you for though, if your making $1,000 a month on eBay expect alot of RSI, bad back etc....
there is no way to accurately say how secure closed source and open source software is, also i must remind everyone before this turns in to a Windows vs Linux (and general *nix) debate that BOTH OSes have open and close source products, i support linux but please no preachers and people turning this into a war of Windoze vs *nix:-)
note: even with the above this comment will stink of win vs *nix:-)
an example of IIS vs apache for instance
security problem with IIS is found, if you publicise it M$ will shit a brick and do their absolute best to play it down and keep it quiet, if you contact them directly they'll keep it quiet for as long as possible and tell you to do the same, its also likely they'll take ages to fix the bug
whereas with open source apache if a bug is found yes it gets publicised quickly, by everyone, and its likely to get fixed ASAP, iss did a sloppy job by publicising it with a fix before even telling apache and then finding out the fix doesn't fix it totally, still apache got an updated release out in less than 24 hours
now back to just open vs closed, danger with open source is that some1 could spend ages analyzing the code looking for an exploit to use maliciously and not publicising it so it doesn't get fixed until after alot of damage has been done, but it is almost guarranteed (not sure of spelling) to get fixed and fixed FAST, with closed its that they are likely to be very slow to react if they react at all
it seems that the US is the only decent place to be on the net, here in the UK we are a country full of 56kers, with have only 3 national telcos, and in most places you can only get 2 of theres, some only 1, our telephone system is reliable but we are tired of 56k, to get broadband is choosing the best of the worst
from the earlier comment belgium seems to be kind of the opposite, they have a unreliable system but have tons of broadband providers
ghana is being showered with technology but have a crap system and are basically screwed
china has lots of fiber optics but no hospital schools
now i know this opinion is stereotypical, but it seems to be an estimate of how the world is internet wise, i only have personal experience in the UK so im summarising everything else

did the slashdot crew forgot to tell us that they are investors in the robot development program and were sent a few to show them how their money is being used?
first is that the program works properly, eg if it was a finance program put in some likely scenarios, with large and small numbers, make sure everythin works as its supposed to
secondly is enter in as much crap as you can, do your best to crash it, act like a complete and utter retard to the program, put in the opposite of what it would normally want
... is the most annoyin part of dev, but it needs to be done, i find gettin a bunch of people who are reliable and don't mind downloading builds in matter of minutes/hours is the best way, also make sure they are good at explaining the problem (eg not 'i clicked a button and it went wrong'), the more descriptive they are the faster you can find the problem.
instant messaging, a decent webhost/ftp, descriptive testers are the things you need
i haven't actually done any programming related exams yet (we dont have any programming subjects in my senior school) but i know how you feel... i can't code unless im on a computer
about the honesty and computers, there are lots of shell programs out there which restrict what a user can do (we have one on our computers at school which stops things like ctrl+alt+del etc..), so surely some1 could just configure this to just allow say notepad?
i live in south uk at a averae senior school (high school to those in US), we have 4 decent (ish) computer 'labs' with at least 20 boxes in, this would be great, if only our admins didn't suck
all the pcs are win98 with some crappy winsuite program on to stop us messing around with them to much, the servers are NT4 (iirc), the hardware is alright its just the software is crappy, it takes longer to logon than it takes to boot (which takes longer than normal)
also our AUP sucks, we're not allowed shortcuts to websites (any website) on our personal space, i was once banned for havin a shortcut to paint!
if the admins had some decency then a 80 ppl odd LAN party would be great, say those with good grades can go on (i know it has been suggested already), the only problem is suppose is supervision, i dont think parental permission would be a problem for most games (most parents dont care what games we play)
all i can say is that school is damn'ed lucky, ive never heard of any school in this area which has anything like that

... except the massive flood which lasted 40 days and 40 nights was on mars not earth! now i wonder what happened to noah and all the animals?
how nested can these indirect links be?
eg, if i put a link on my site to my m8s site who puts a link to his m8s site who has a link to this would i have to remove the link?

... what linux distrubution does the world's largest server farm use?
what does this have to do with the story?? /me recommends mods put this to 'insanely offtopic' :)
and i swear ive read this before somewhere
a Q3 or UT mod would of been more popular
:)
just imagine, running around fragging bots called B3D and the other spyware/adware etc... stuff, now that IMHO would be fun
from the top of the front page for me:

oi, is this someone from #blitzed? if so /me is old Antony :)
...are we going to have environmentalists freeing the robots from their cruel tiny paddocks where they aren't fed?
hopefully we've learnt from our mistakes in the past and governments will act now to enforce there isn't any botism (robot racism) in the future
... are we going to have robots out on the streets demanding equal rights with humans?
its there not their
/. staff to a school of english :)
we should start a fund to send all
