I know personally that what games did for me is not shown in any of this research. It helped me learn about computers. It began playing half-life with software rendering, and I began to research how i could make my game playing better. I then spent hundreds of hours learning about computers, and (thank$ to my very generou$ parent$) was able to build my own computer.
The point is, my learning (or desire for learning) never really stopped. I soon became a daily slashdot reader, and I wait for where my hunger for knowledge will take me next. I know this is perhaps not usal for many kids, but that's my story.
RSA turned out to be a combination of different parts of number theory that turned out to change our world. Who would have thought that this and this would turn into something this amazing. Don't let anyone dismiss pure math...
First, the jobs lost by micron really should be invested somewhere else. Yes it means short term unemployment, but the capital can be invested elsewhere. Next, it may be that Hynix isn't a company that shouldn't exist... but that is from the Korean perspective. Like i said, we shouldn't care if they are subsidizing a product we consume.
Ther is one issue you bring up... perhaps they continue to subsidize so that Micron goes out of business and goes out of business. I really don't know anything about this issue in detail, but that is a possible explanation.
Welcome to the invisible corruption. The consumer now supports micron to be inefficient, and looses out big time. If Korea was subsidizing their DRAM makers, we should be happy: That would mean their tax payers are paying for us to have cheap memory. However, since Micron gains with the tariffs, the gains are concentrated to one company and they lobby (probably pay) government officials for the tariffs. Such a shame, because it happens much more than we know about; this is on slashdot because it is about DRAM. If only everyone could see...
I have the same problem, and after a good long day staring at the screen the coreners of my eyes will turn bloodshot. NOTHING works to help it, except for taking some time away from the screen.
I wonder if there are risks of this? I mean, how long until their fish have 3 eyes, and children are born with 4 feet? ... oh well, as long as it's being tested on some small village and not me:D
Ok, is it just me or is buffy totally not a geek show. No geeks I know watch(ed) it, and I dont watch it. So what the hell is this doing on the geek site slashdot?
Of course, i could be wrong... any geeks here watch it?
He blames the users lack of knowledge as a cause of some of these bugs.
If by "users" you mean "developers" and by "lack of knowledge" you mean "total oversights of fundamental security," then i do agree with you mr. gates.
Wait... it takes 9.8 Mbits/s - 20 Mbits/s to broadcast? I'm really no engineer or anything, but how the hell do we provide that kind of transfer? If i can download at 9.8Mbits/s why isn't my internet using that technology yet? Think of how much pr0n that is!
Anyways, if you have never seen HDTV played on an HDTV capable display, looks beyond amazing (and you thought DVD looked good... heh.)
Good point, i see what you are saying. However, i still think that if you choose to upgrade one thing, i would look at what sharky uses in their guides.
I really don't like their guides. I find the best one is the sharky gamers guide to system building (at different budgets.) Check it out @ www.sharkyextreme.com
We all know this will never happen, but here's an argument anyways:
If i am paying (directly or indirectly) the RIAA becuase i am using their music, then they have charged me useage fees and it should therefore be legal for me to use the music on the file sharing networks!

Well when you figure out how to do it, let us know =)

Yeah, i use the ATI linux drivers and they work very well.
And we thought cell phones were bad. Just wait 'till we all have full multimedia systems in our cars.

I think it's made up. It was just a joke anyways.
A patent on the "Use of Common Sense to Solve Real-World Problems" was recently granted.
You know you are a geek when you understand a headline of all these acronyms... :\
I'm addicted. Typing http://www.slashdot.org in my URL bar is instinct when i open my browser. Ack :S
FYA, your modern PDA is outdated ... out-dated.
No need for the ISO images ... I built my own bootable ISO by following the instructions at http://www.userlocal.com/articles/isohowto.html
I regret every buying creative soundcards ... they leave you stranded in terms of drivers and support.
Slashdot shouldn't be giving creative free advertising on the front page
