"enhanced support for Red Hat and SuSE Linux" most probably means that IBM will do their best to get those workstations certified by Red Hat and SuSE.

As far as I can see, all Thinkcentre models ship with WinXP (Home or Pro) with a few shipping with a PC-DOS license. Anyhow, unless they really do release a Linux preload model as stated in the India Times article, I really doubt that IBM will support anything but the preload. Install a RH on your Intellistation, it will probably be certified by Red Hat, and you'll have to turn to them for support.

As for Linux preloads, some Thinkpads used to have them a couple of years, and therefore IBM would support the Caldera preload (that must have been before they bought SCO :), although I can imagine than in most cases what you heard was "Do a recovery"!

I think India is to be reckoned with in the future. Take the pharmaceutical industry at the moment, India has big companies manufacturing generic medicines.
That story actually reminded of that: give them the source/ingredients and they will try to make it, but cheaper. Obviously they can't make free software any cheaper, but if they try to make it a complete solution, then why couldn't they have a chance of succeeding?
The major problem they are facing at the moment imho is probably a lack of qualified IT people, but give them time, and they will surely be there.

While I've been disappointed that the site itself has been mostly stagnant these last few years (http://map.jodi.org is mostly a collection of dead links now eg., although it has its charms), the way they are taking their work outside the internet, with such exhibitions all around the world is probably the main thing in this article.

Some people have already pointed out that HTML is not art, just a medium to create art, but the important thing here is that by taking their project outside the internet, the jodi team are showing to the world that HTML can create art indeed.

Surely DARPA has no interest in stopping OpenBSD development or even just slowing it down since they use it themselves. However they say it is for security reasons. Shock horror, terrorists could be benefiting from the use of Open BSD too!!

I am wondering whether DARPA could not have plans to try and do development from the current Open BSD themselves?
Check the Open BSD copyright policy again. There's nothing preventing them to use the source for their own closed source or open source software, and while Open BSD is available to everyone, they could keep it for themselves.

It's the only explanation that makes sense that I can think of. Obviously I may be wrong and the real explanation could be one that makes no sense.

This sounds like you still work with them!

My experience has taught me a few things when it comes to choosing ISPs, which fall roughly into 2 types:

    - The big corporate ones, targetted mostly at home users, although some do have business customers as well. They're the ones likely to introduce those weird clauses in their TOS, or to provide poor service because they're big and they don't care anyway, if some customers leave, they'll get new ones who have seen the TV ads or picked up a CD at Walmart. A lot of those ISPs originate from their country's phone company too.

    - The smaller ones, and those that are mostly targetted at business users. If you're on the same lines as business users, the ISP will have to react really quickly in case of problems on their networks. If you need support they won't only support Windows. Downside is that you probably won't be a priority for them, but if they keep things running smoothly for business users, they'll run smoothly for home users as well.

I completely agree about 1984. And not just for the privacy part.

I am always amazed at how Bush and his administration manage to get so much support from the Americans. Are the schools there teaching children not to question anything, stop thinking and take what's being said on TV as some holy thoughts?

It is shocking how easily people are being manipulated into thinking this is all being done for their own good. The basis of all this at the moment seems to be the creation of a black and white world: with us/against us - patriotic/unpatriotic etc. making more and more difficult to express disagreement and encouraging censorship.

I suggest we start a large charity organisation and distribute a copy of 1984 to every American citizen. It might hopefully open the minds of the millions of Americans who admire Dubya Bush most.
