  1. Re:Nothing New (Or Particularly Bad) Here on Music Industry Shaking Down Coffee Shops · · Score: 1

It seems to me that small bar owners will need a written contract with these bands to restrict what gets played. And bands that are thin on original and are using existing licensable music to show off their performance stuff will be more limited in where they can perform, only at places that can afford the standard performance license packages from the 3 agencies. === It seems to me that the extortionists are going after the wrong people....if it is the artist that is playing the cover, then they should be the ones that get the bill supposedly they are making a bit of coin, even if it is just gas money, on the gig. It would be between the group and the venue to figure out the details of compensation, but the groups song list would be the proof. ASCAP needs to focus their investigation on the group that is actually playing the cover. This is the "information age" and it would not be that much of a paperwork burden to keep a database of songs played per group, and bill accordingly. ASCAP could even have different billing arraignments, Groups can acknowledge that they play mostly covers and pay a lower flat fee per song, or a group can pay "alacart" at a higher rate per song. This would have the added benefit of fewer covers and more original music, or at least a hard look at whether or not the cover is worth the coin to play. Of course this would bring in realistic revenue which ASCAP may not want when they can shakedown...I mean bill for the POTENTIAL of some venue playing a cover.

Alternativly, would there be enough intrest (or funding) for a consortium of Astronomers to purchase it. Nasa could be contracted out to make needed repairs, and would be able to focus on the newer missions.

Since it is a public asset, I would think the "purchase" price would mostly involve setting up a control center. What does NASA actually contribute to the project now (I know they take care of operational costs, but does NASA actually pay for/perform most of the science?).

If a bunch of Trekies can raise over $15 million to keep a weak version of Star Trek on the air, wouldn't there be enough intrest to keep a REAL piece of equipent on-line.

  5. Re:This is kinda interesting on Volatility of Human Memory · · Score: 1

I recently found a box of slides taken during one of our trips to Disneyland (I would have been 2, 4, or 6 at the time). There are pictures of old attractions no longer in existence (Mule train, canoe ride, Badlands train ride) that I can remember clearly. At first I thought that maybe I was just attaching memories to the pictures, but other memories surfaced and I sought out old pictures that my parents had kept that confirmed my memories. Talking to my mother, I recounted three diffrent events that she was able to confirm happened much as I rememberd them.
Now I suppose it is possible that we where feeding off of each others memories, but, combined with the photo evidence, I feel that they where real memories that had not been reinforced in the past. Indeed, it seemed as we went over each picture, the events of the trips became more clear. We never where able to seperate which of the three trips each memory happened, but a remarkable "rememberence" took place. It was almost like the machanism for recalling the memories was fine tuning itself. I think that the memories are in there, at least most of them (a summary of our lives perhaps).
I also think that memories, or at least a poor copy of them are transfered across the generations, to become part of our generational awareness. our mindset, values, even actuall knowlage of how things work is passed from our ancestors, thru us, to our future.

Given that the two groups cancel themselves out (assuming that I give equal weight to the personalities involved ), I would do my own research and decide based on that. As for my children or grand-children, the bar would be raised a bit higher on the decision, but I would still let them if it seemed reasonable.

If there are natural causes of global warming, you can bet that it will outweigh anything we can do to control it. At best we would be able to slow it down a bit. If it is primarily us, then there are other things that we should be worried about more (up to and including an asteroid strike) Personaly, I am waiting for the beach-front property in Arizona and still driving my SUV

I know it takes me longer to read a passage if there are no contextual clues. I wonder what research has been done on HOW we learn to read new words. I know that if I run across technical (Legal, scientific, etc) topics (with a vocabulary that I am familure with in speech, but not written) I am able to more quickly assimulate the words and increase my reading speed then if it is a totaly new vocabulary.

A few days ago they added some functionality and part of what they did was check browsers. 1.5 is not recognized and I get a warning box telling me I must use the lastest version of IE, Mozilla, and Opra. Perhaps one other browser.

I have not tried it with Linux since the change, but I would guess that it would still work if they are just checking browser versions.

My main complaint with the USPS App is that not all addresses are recognized so I have to put stamps or go into the PO to get postage (and not get the free confirmation you get with the online lable).

In May of 2001 I was laid off and figured I would have a nice 2-3 month "vacation" while looking for anouther job. I Hit the job boards, went door to door, started attending networking events and was able to get a fair number of callbacks. in almost every case I was told that while my experience was good, I was lacking some of the hard job requirements (certs, 4 years working with XP, Coulden't contact one of my refrences, etc). I was told twice that the company was really not looking to actually hire someone, but to make it look like there was no one that had the skills needed. When the hireing freezes where over and I started getting serious calls again, the same jobs are offering way less then before. My thought is that all during the boom times, the established companies had to offer much higher compensation to keep up with the dot coms. Now that the bubble has burst, the same companies are getting back to a much saner compensation structure (for them)

I was installing AS/400's at various AllState ins. companies in California. IBM would have them shipped via indipenent shippers to the various offices. I had shown up early one day and was doing paperwork in my car when I saw the truck pull up. The driver opened the back and proceded to pull the crate out of the truck with a mighty yank. I realized this was "not good" and headed into the office to confront the driver and see what the damage was. The driver tried to deny that he had acted so foolishly and even after I showed him the broken slats on the crate refused to sign the statment on the bill of lading about the damage. This being an insurence company, there wha a camera available to take pictures of the damage (broken drive mounts, a board had come loose, the damage to the crate and case, etc) In the end, and about 3 weeks later, IBM got a check for the damage from the carrier.
