You want to walk around with a clunky 15" screen? Well, not me.:)
No one does. Not even with a compact 13" screen. I think the solution is a 3D projection of the output:). This is the only way a 15" screen will fit into a pocket... This might take a while until it exists and might have some other problems, but it does solve the screen size problem...
This article is not well written, its vastly slanted towards law-breakers.
Sure, it is slanted somewhat... but I have not seen an objective article in a while and, at least here, would rather see it slanted towards law-breakers when cable company.
Not legal? It's called ILLEGAL. Uncapping your modem is ILLEGAL. "Not legal" is trying to cover it up.
Or perhaps just trying to achieve the advertized "lightning fast unlimited speed, 100x of a modem" internet? They mentioned (in the older article) someone who got away by claiming that he was simply trying to get what was advertized.
So the fact that there wasn't enough bandwidth makes this better? Okay? They basically modded it to use as much bandwidth as possible, to the detriment of others.
No it does not make it ok. But it DOES point out that they must have LIED when estimating the costs/damages to get it up to 250K and involve FBI. Seriously... I have not seen 100Mbit on a LAN...
They broke the law and must now fact the music.
Sure. but does the term "cruel and unusual punishment" mean anything to you?? They did not steal even close to 250K worth of bandwidth.
Passive voice. He's just a victim! Its not his fault! All his neighbors say he's a great guy!
Judging by the article, his life was, in fact, screwed over already with more to come. Enron execs must have been executed by the same logic, right?
Friggin' bummer. You gamble long enough and you will lose.
The question is: what do you lose? No one says they should be exempt. but fine and service termination seems more reasonable.
It is EXTREMELY unfair to make an EXAMPLE out of someone. This is exactly how cruel and unusual punishment occurs.
...If only everyone named Gates did stuff this cool."
Is it really really neccessary to have a cheap shot at MS no matter how little the post might be related? Why don't we just have a default sig "Windoze sucks, Linux rulez."?
Just in case the posters read the comments: Please lash out at MS and other scapegoats ONLY when it is justified. (not too optimistic, since not all posters proofread the submissions or even read the articles, it seems... sigh...)
I am pretty sure that this has been discussed on slashdot and elsewhere. This story is not as simple as you think... see this link. A judge is often (if not always) a more qualified and objective party when any of us.
McDonalds maintained an *unsually* high temperature for optimal coffee taste that could (and did) cause third degree burns. Other vendors maintain *lower* temperature, that can still cause burns but not to such great extent.
Is Linux harder to use? Yeah, probably. So if you want Unix chic and you want useablity go buy a G4 and run OS X. You'll feel cool 'cos you're 1337 and you'll feel smart 'cos you can run it. Everyone wins.
Precisely! I know should stop complaining so much:). I was not trying to say that Linux should be made easier or complain about being a lousy SysAdmin. I was just answering the question! Until the day one does not need to be somewhat a SysAdmin to run their own desktop Linux WILL NOT become mainstream or a serius desktop competitor. It is as simple as that...
I am not even arguing what is right, I am just continously trying to answer the question I hear: why is Linux not taking over Windows market more rapidly? Either Linux has to wait until all the users become SysAdmins or it has to become userfriendly more like windows. That's the options I see...
Yes!
I can finally talk about this without being even slightly offtopic:)!
The main reason for using Windows is the user-friendliness which is still *far* above any linux I have seen (haven't seen 'em all of course).
I love developing in Unix, could never do work in Windows. But besides the games and media files (which is also an important factor) it is the usability that kills Linux. I've posted this before and I'll say it again: I, as a CS PhD student, can NEVER get linux installed or configured quickly and painlessly. Somehow the large amounts of FAQs that are out there are NOT geared to novices and tend not to say the most obvious things that I need to know. They might go on about fancy configurations and problems, but the actual URL example or config line to use is NEVER there.
I think there is a general approach to users in Linux "It was hard to write, it should be hard to use". While it might be less insulting to the user intelligence, this makes Linux unusable by the novices (and I don't mean Joe Doe here, I mean a CS major, someone marginally more knowledgable with computers...)
Anyways, I could rumble on and on about the particular examples how in Windows I can usually guess the right option by right-clicking on something or going to a menu. And how in Linux (even after you have installed X through a very, very painful process) it is still impossible... Oh, well, I hear Mandrake is more for newbies than other distribution... I'll be trying it soon:).
The voiceovers do not ALWAYS destroy Anime. They only do if they are crappy (which is often the case, I agree...).
I can definately tell you that dubbing in Cowboy Bebop is amazing. It is really well done and does not feel inferior to the original (I am amazed and happy they have taken their time to do it properly). Also, for the other cases (like Kenshin) where the dubbing completely destroys the original... well, that's why we have DVDs nowdays - they have subtitles and you get to hear the original sound. That's the proper way to watch foreign works, for the most part.
Problem is, that the conditions tend to change from the case to case. I suspect that even a reasonable commonsence set changes from case to case. Also, you really do not want a law for every commonsence thing that could occur. There is probably too many of those:)
I was under the impression that an EULA will not hold in court, which is where it will end up sooner or later when some *serious* conflict with the customer will occur.
Which does bring up a question - why is there no mpg file available for download as a rule?
The order of preference seems to be as follows:
1. Real player format that can not be downloaded at all
2. Quicktime file which you can usually download (but I don't like the client:)...)
3. Some other weird streaming format (windows media? can it be downloaded)
4. Nice mpg file that I can actually take to my desktop -- even with my Cable connection, my processor just does not handle video streaming very well.
Can someone tell me why this is happening? Seems counter productive - streaming is bad for network if it can be avoided. And this is not premium/paid content we are talking about! This is trailers... as in the stuff that studios should be happy to let us watch for free!
I have nothing against DTV/HDTV.
I did get the impression that it is being forced down our collecive throats since it has not been adapted quickly enough by the market.
I feel that the regulations are being applied to the *wrong* industry. Wouldn't it be much better to mandate that all vehicles must be electrical or hybrid by 2007? As much as I like my car, I can see the advantage of such law. but TV phase out? for what? for Hollywood quality content that they have been withholding?:)
NO, the previous article (Common Criteria Certification) was stupid Microsoft bashing. This looks like justified bashing... PR nightmare and such.
As much as I don't like unneccesary jabs at MS, this does not imply that all complaints about it are baseless.
Didn't they offer free software just to capture the market somewhere in US? Did they Namibia can afford more? (not to mention the offer to provide the software platform at some unknown Research&Development (!!) cost)
As true as it might be for AMD, it does not work the same way for Microsoft. My next desktop will be AMD, but who knows when I actually switch to Linux. Development is all fun and nice while there is a paid sysadmin, but as a home machine it is always a disaster for me.
Now while I am a newbie, I am a computer science major and I know *something*, so I figure that until I can install Linux without major pain (X set up takes weeks, MBR gets overwritten for some reason, etc.) Linux will not be a widespread desktop alternative...
AMD would be a less widespread alternative if Windows would not run on it.
For more than one large store chain (such as Staples) this is no longer an issue.
I was recently ordering from them and with my tax there was an explanation that basically stated that: Since they have a *presence* in 48 states (excluding Havaii and Alaska), I will be taxed no matter what (unless I actually live in Havaii/Alaska).
So states are probably not missing *all* the revenues from online busnesses...

StarCraft series. All of our game designers and development teams are

I don't know what sort of plan you got, but cell plans are NOT getting cheaper.
I have done some research recently (my contract is coming to an end). In order to improve my (AT&T) plan I have to do a 2 year commitment, otherwise it is *at best* the same as my current contract.
Others companies are about the same, it comes down to quality of coverage in your area, I suppose.
Oh, yeah, if anything, currently every plan I have seen has extended peak time last until 9pm rather than 8pm. So I would say cell plans gotten a bit more expensive...
... I ignore all anonymous phone calls(none of my friends or contacts are so cowardly as to hide from me),..
I guess you don't have any friends or contacts who use phone cards. (or calling via on-campus phone system). My phone card blocks caller ID as I go through their 800 number. Also, I am pretty sure that my calls from campus used to result in strangest things on caller ID display...

Maybe this will slow down the adoption of the Digital TV...
Redhat + ATI Rage 128 (still don't know why I got it to work, was really by accident, in my opinion)
Debian + GeForce4 MX440.
Redhat was a while ago, though (2 years?)
