Well said my friend. Our little College suffers from *EXACTLY* that problem. By god i have 3 degrees and I want admin access to XP. or whatever.. it's a typical faculty problem. Thing is, our faculty do not do research!!! its a college! Geeze.
Oh well. You are right, someone was asleep at the wheel. We are implementing vlan based secuirty, the students cannot touch the admin stuff, IPS, firewall upgrades, I have a trapping Subnet (helps catch scanners etc)... Lots can be done, and actually on not a huge budget if one is willing to look at things like SNORT etc. Things like a packetshaper can keep outbound evil traffic down, which I feel is the responsibilty of everyone on a high speed internet connection.
What probably happened here is similar to what we see. $RESEARCHDOC sets up a system/server and never consults with IS at all.. then he gets owned, and of course.. who gets the shaft?
That's why having control over the network is critical.
Well, I recently bought 2 dutch euro cup soccer jerseys. They were cheap like $25 for the 2, when I got them they were sold as "replicas" because I assumed they were unavailable. Well. I found out nike has a nikefootball.com and for like 58 euro (so
around 90 canadian) i could have 1! not including shipping. Considering it's a novelty item to me, i don't see why i would care if its fake, it cost me $25.
Fuck nike, let them drop their prices...
Same goes with DVDs and such, music etc...
I view fake items the same way I view car parts, There is the original BMW stuff, $$$ and then there is the aftermarket knockoff stuff $.:) So, i should actually have a choice between fakes and not really when it comes to some things.
Interesting, we actually have deepfreeze in the non CS computerlabs.. has cut wayyy down on spyware etc. never thought of that for other uses.:) Your suggestion holds alot of merit.
Hehe. Good one, I caught that one and didn't think it would matter, this being slashdot.
Perhaps the policy shouldn't be first time offense firing, but definately after a warning. I work in a small college where we are constantly explaining to faculty why they do not have admin rights on their XP machines and why they cannot just install any software they want. In our organization, the perception is, that we (faculty) own the computers.:) sometimes the rulemakers need to crack down...
Most vehicles will still have enough pressure built up in their brake booster to hit the brakes with ignition off. I would be concerned about steering though, if you were in a bmw 760il for example, you might have some issues as there is motor assist in the steering system...
Long live the l0pht. I still have an LHI CD in my archives somewhere... I'm 24, so In 1992 I was just getting my start...:)
They are fondly missed, Too bad I never got a T-shirt.
True enough, but also.. as part of that respect, realize that women are just people and treat them as such. I'm a nerd, women like me... why? I don't stutter and drool when one walks by or comes to ask
a tech question.
Respect...
Teachers in Florida are not allowed (by law) to strike. My Histroy Prof in high school mentioned this, there are some "essential" services that are legally not allowed to strike...
With the current climate in the USA, perhaps they were referring to an organization that would get teachers to strike as being A terror group.
I drive a 75 and an 88 bmw. I totally agree with you man.. The one thing i didn't realize was that a slant six dart get 28mpg? nice thing performs as well as my 88 bmw.
My car will be getting a fully programable fuel injection system (sorta like K-jettronic or l-jetronic) Still will be cap and rotor and points though..
I smoke Many a car in My slushbox.. but on the track, I would *NOT* be driving a slushbox.. not enough control for my liking... sometimes you just gotta downshift.
Actually without a solid roll bar system a 5-point harness is a bad idea.. But I agree.. Someone please sell me a new 3-series with no airbags. or give me an engine and tranny from it for my 2002.
The USA has anti-innovative things in place.. them DMCA comes to mind, and all this suing over IP...

You Americans piss me off with that "sue them" atitude.. *sigh*
The guy was running unapproved code on state owned equipment.... Simple, he broke a rule he pays concequences.

The US government has been revoking rights and freedoms left and right, in the name of "terrorism"... So, in a way, they have won..
ROAD TRIP!!!
Well. basically at 250 you hit the brake. the car spins, you hit a wall and break your face...

So, what kinda carb is on there?
Yes.. exactly.. Nothing gets me more then when I see a ricer with a 4.5 inch coffee can muffler revving up at the light... Bah. :)

Could water in the brake fluid change its PH? Brake fluid does tend to get water contaminated over the years.. but still....
That is funny!

Perhaps they were referring to the gaps that occur between the body and doors? I know that's an issue with some vehicles.. they are all different
Lol... So I have an 88 BMW 528e, about 28 MPG or so without variable valve timing and all the tricks... whee.
The same can be said for my 75 bmw vs your 84 rabbit.
and their respective enclosures.. not just the bulb.
Even better... How long before I can download dance routines and actually know how to dance? ;)
Sure.. when a hacker gets caught, don't they seize all the computers and such.. they are his/her property and contain incriminating evidence.
