Well said my friend. Our little College suffers from *EXACTLY* that problem. By god i have 3 degrees and I want admin access to XP. or whatever.. it's a typical faculty problem. Thing is, our faculty do not do research!!! its a college! Geeze.

Oh well. You are right, someone was asleep at the wheel. We are implementing vlan based secuirty, the students cannot touch the admin stuff, IPS, firewall upgrades, I have a trapping Subnet (helps catch scanners etc)... Lots can be done, and actually on not a huge budget if one is willing to look at things like SNORT etc. Things like a packetshaper can keep outbound evil traffic down, which I feel is the responsibilty of everyone on a high speed internet connection.

What probably happened here is similar to what we see. $RESEARCHDOC sets up a system/server and never consults with IS at all.. then he gets owned, and of course.. who gets the shaft?

That's why having control over the network is critical.

  3. It if wasn't so goddamn expensive on U.S. Declares War on Intellectual Property Theft · · Score: 0

Well, I recently bought 2 dutch euro cup soccer jerseys. They were cheap like $25 for the 2, when I got them they were sold as "replicas" because I assumed they were unavailable. Well. I found out nike has a nikefootball.com and for like 58 euro (so around 90 canadian) i could have 1! not including shipping. Considering it's a novelty item to me, i don't see why i would care if its fake, it cost me $25. Fuck nike, let them drop their prices... Same goes with DVDs and such, music etc... I view fake items the same way I view car parts, There is the original BMW stuff, $$$ and then there is the aftermarket knockoff stuff $. :) So, i should actually have a choice between fakes and not really when it comes to some things.

Hehe. Good one, I caught that one and didn't think it would matter, this being slashdot.

Perhaps the policy shouldn't be first time offense firing, but definately after a warning. I work in a small college where we are constantly explaining to faculty why they do not have admin rights on their XP machines and why they cannot just install any software they want. In our organization, the perception is, that we (faculty) own the computers. :) sometimes the rulemakers need to crack down...
