  1. Soaked Gateway on Your Most Damage-Resistant Hardware? · · Score: 1

At the college where I'm a Systems Tech, one of the instructors watered her dead, dry plant which was sitting atop her gateway tower. Needless to say, I pick the box up, i'm walking through the hallways with this computer dripping a trail behind me. I get back to the tech bench, dissassemble everything (even took the case off the powersupply) and let it dry with fans on it over the weekend. Monday morning, the box was reassembled, and booya it worked. My guess is the water tripped the psu's short circuit protection, and everything else just got wet, but was turned off...

That said, where does one purchase multi processor alpha boards.. I remember reading a linux mag a few years ago there was a company that produced multi processor alpha motherboards (I think 4 processors) :)

I'd rather see governments switching to open source and either using the saved dollars for something ie: education/heathcare, or just give us some tax rebates.. Neat idea though. P.s. fp?

I agree, take where I live (Alberta, Canada) My particular little town has a horrendeus computer ownership rate. Why? Well, it's a blue collar town where the oil rig guys go and spend their 75k+ a year on gun racks and quads. They don't trust computers and they don't want to learn to use them much less buy one and surf the net...

Even if you bring broadband to everyone in North America, are they all going to want it?

Lol.. That said, as soon as they can find a way of getting decent (not 400ping satellite) broadband to the counrty, i'm buying 100 acres and starting a geek farm.

Very interesting, I have always run an Asus house and never seen this problem. I'm not sure if things are the same as a couple years ago, but MSI was considered crap in quite a few circles... Than again, things change.. :)

Your are right, actually this guy did not a bad job of it, Most of you guys on here who are bitching and saying "how could slashdot be assaulted with such crap" probably don't have the balls to post such a thing. It's a cool little bit, granted it's not professional level, but he took something, modded it to his needs and it works. :)

Hell, if I had 1/10 of the negative feedback on the stuff i've hacked together to learn on (or whatever) I'd be a computer/electronics hating luddite.

Give the guy a break. I think he did an admirable job!

  9. Average user on LindowsOS Will Bundle AOL Client · · Score: 1

I think that the whole point of user friendlyness is lost on us linux geeks. Lets cater to the average user who doesn't understand MS word. I mean honestly at least 70% of users or more are just that... Users.. How many of us can change the headgasket in our car, how many even know what that is? So why do we give the average "dum dum" computer user such a hard time. I think that adding AOL functionality to lindows is a great idea. Throw in MSN messenger, yahoo, icq and whatever else makes their lives on the computer easier. Lindows is for them.. I prefer my linux from scratch, But does Grandma?

It is great to hear of a RH for schools sort of distro. Our college only uses one RH server, that's serving our comp sci labs.. I'd love to see more linux in the post secondary world, paying the micrsoft tax is becoming more and more a problem in the academic budget slashing times in which we live. Long live RH :)

I can only attest that when our little regional college upgraded to 10meg internet that was unrestricted, we used up our whole year's bandwidth bill in like a week.

Warez sure as heck isn't slowing down due to "file sharing" utilities.

Our network now has most of the popular p2p apps blocked, that worked..
