Speaking as one person at a full time job that regularly requires in excess of 60 hours a week, and as a friend to others who work 2 crappy minimum wage jobs at similar hours, it seems like a lot of people these days work themselves to the point where they're just too tired to rabble-rouse politically.
I use Open Source to put music on my Ipod.
GTKpod, Amarok, etc...
And yes, by the way, there are FOSS utilities that will allow you to mount even a non-jailbroken Ipod touch out there. Google IFuse, for example
I would argue that having your body penetrated against your will is an inherently violent act.
Yes, it is. However, the person you're replying to is talking about consensual intercourse where one of the participants is considered legally incompetent. That kind of rape is not violent. It is, however, still immoral and sleazy.
No, Seriously...
The programming language you learned at school is worthless, and not just for Linux, either. Soon enough, there will be a new microsoft language, or at least a new version, and everything you now know will be deprecated. All languages are like this, more or less.
What makes you a good programmer is your ability to understand computers and break problems down into well-designed systems; knowing a programming language is nigh-worthless, because all you need for any arbitrary language is a week and a manual.
Just pick something. It doesn't matter which language. Or which IDE. Hell, you could start with bash shell scripting, it's all the same. Fiddle around with it, and once you got a feel for it, dive right the hell in.
In america, If you leave a corpse in your living room and then open the windows so the neighborhood can see in, the police dont need a search warrant, because what they need is in plain sight. You can't later claim that they violated your 4th amendment rights because you have no reasonable expectation of privacy. This is why its legal to go dumpster diving, among other things. What's to stop the police from taking the same stance with an open WAP, since you've left it open, you're inviting the whole world to look in and see. If they find evidence of copyright infringement, or kiddie porn, what's to stop them from saying it was in plain sight?
A Web Server on your cell phone? What would you serve off it? The only application I can possibly think of is to serve as a way to get those stupid lo-res pictures off your camera phone. Other than that, is there any reason to introduce such a critical security flaw into your phone?
Are you going to include voice-recognition software so you can blog-on-the-go?
How about posting those sappy text messages from your soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend?
Not to mention how the hell you're going to get any other content you want to host onto the cellphone in the first place...
Not worth the risk, IMHO.
...
Now, I just got this kick-ass idea...
Let's port ftpd over to a cell phone, so you can upload mp3s to it, and listen to them on your phone, and maybe even use the cell transmitter to broadcast the tunes to your car's radio and you could even use them as your own personal cell phone hold music...
Not to start a flame war about tobacco, but, a little clarification of the earlier point:
We have scads of scientific data which proves that there is a relationship between smoking and cancer, but we cannot prove that smoking causes cancer on the weight of that evidence alone. A statistical relationship between the two allows us to conclude that either Smoking causes Cancer, Cancer causes Smoking, or that some unknown factor causes cancer and smoking. The Tobbacco companies harp on this point endlessly, and they are technically correct. Although the assertion that cancer causes smoking is absurd, we can't rule out the common-cause possibility.
The same logic applies to violence and violent media. People assume that violent media causes violence, but there's no direct evidence to support that; all we can say is that there seems to be a correlation.
1: We have evidence that Violence and Violent Video Games are correlated. Nobody has any clue if violent games makes kids violent, or if violent kids like violent games; but it's politically unpopular to accuse your constituients' kids of being thugs. (FYI, this is the kind of evidence that says smoking and cancer are correlated, but nobody really cares whether or not cancer causes smoking)
2: It's a mid-term Election year. That means that there are several elected officials who desperately need to distract the people voting for them away from an unpopular war, and a deficit which is spiraling out of control.
3: The violence issue in particular has traction because people feel powerless to combat it; trying to protect your kids from becoming assholes is like trying to protect them from the chicken pox. It doesn't work. So, people find a scapegoat, something tangible that they can dismantle and try to keep away from their children. They convince themselves that if they can just keep violent media away from the kids, maybe kids won't know how to be violent. This isnt really their fault, people have been falling for non-causa-pro-causa arguments (with this, therefore because of this) since the dawn of time.
4: Our elected officials are like the contractors at your work. Solving problems does not help them; in fact, Solving problems permanently in a way which makes everyone happy makes them less likely to be re-elected.(this is not a troll, think about this) However, appearing to solve problems does help them. They get the credit for being a tireless defender of the public, and the problems are still there to fix next time they need a boost.
5: History teaches us the following: Games and other High-definition media will continue to be the scapegoat until someone builds a better scapegoat. Console games like GTA will wear targets on their backs until someone makes a VR Game where you rape/kill/steal/whatever or otherwise manages to take simulated violence to the Next Level. Until then, we personally have a choice: we can either whine, follow the mob, or run for congress.
6: There are thousands of idiots out there, sooner or later you will probably fail to think about something and be one of them. While I don't expect you to fix any of the above problems, do try to be smart about it and start thinking critically about the next thing that pisses you off.
Has second life ever made any profit, ever? Granted that the people who invested think that there is money to be made in 2nd life, but I see 12-year olds running virtual brothels ( http://www.alphavilleherald.com/archives/000049.ht ml ) as the game's only economic vehicle for making any sort of US currency. I suggest that if they want to blow money, I have a bridge in a MUD that I can sell them.
Judging by some of the things they're trying to sell me, I think they might already be stoned... =P
Power to the A.G. for at least trying to enforce CAN-SPAM, I look forward to seeing if this holds up in court.
Granted, I understand that M$ probably does do this. They almost need to in order to survive. but cringley's "dramatic reinactment" of MS employees was a little over-the-top. It sounds like a plot from a cheesy two-bit conspiracy movie. It's pretty hard to take these threats seriously when we're using this kind of hyperbole. I appreciate the content, but lament the delivery method....
Think about it... Borrow a copy of the CD from some poor schmuck who bought it. Then post the code on the internet. It's legal, the GPL says so. Problem solved. Sheesh...if it was this easy to get around the GPL, You'd already be paying for SCO's next round of lawsuits.
In general, your Monitor will not run linux. But it would be nice of them to release a linux driver for their (no doubt proprietary) custom vid card needed to run this monster. Actually, I'm more interested in what kind of 3D acceleration this bad boy gets. Think UT2004 and sniper shots on l4m3rz so far away you barely look like a pixel to them.
VoIP anybody?
Seriously, I would LOVE it if my broadband ISP was more like my phone company. for starters, I wouldn't have to pay an extra $25 just so I can get a friggin static IP. I mean, dynamic IP addys would disappear. ("hey, Jim, what's your phone number today?" "143.225.33.205... as long as my phone doesn't reboot.")
It's one thing to assume that us "Linux bigots" are going to tell you that Sun's product is harder to use than Linux, or that their desktop is uglier than GNOME or KDE. But if the product does not install correctly, that's probably a bit more serious than just "media bias".
It is my opinion that since the dawn of literacy, People have been predicting the impending doom caused by new technology. Anyone ever read about how ther were worried about setting the hydrogen in the air on fire when they did the Manhattan Project? Yes, as any boy scout will tell you, being prapared is usually a good thing, but please can the gloom-n-doom because the world isn't going to end just because we made really small machines. *grumble*
I have neither Windoze nor MacOS and Wine doesn't feel like running iTunes today. Well, screw it, it's not like they had the music I was hoping for anyways. Anybody want my free song codes?
When we make a protocol, MS can copy it perfectly, because they have access to all the neccesary documentation, and can even look at how we implemented it. When MS makes a protocol, we usually can't even get a look at the specifications, we have to reverse-engineer it, and therefore it takes us longer to make a product that doesn't always have all the functionality. It only seems like we constantly play catch-up to MS because MS doesn't really play fair.
Even if Jack can get someone to make a DVD descrambler for Linux, It's not going to be free. Not free as in speech, nor free as in beer. If they let us have the source, we can disable the DRM. Which more or less gets down to the root of the problem. We have the skills to roll our own, and they fear us because of that. Even with the best of intentions on our part, If they cannot put us under their thumb, they won't trust us, period.

New Bluetooth

yeah, i know, my spelling sucks. That'll teach me to use the preview button next time... =P

Now all we need is a "Linux Documentation Writing by Example" Then we could tell people WTFM instead of RTFM. =)
I don't know if this counts as "art" in video games, but it beats the hell out of turning on "paintball" mode and trying to paint the walls green.
