This is why we should seriously consider abolishing the government and leaving everything to the market forces.
Couldn't this result in massive amounts of money being invested in social engineering to get us all to like the same things, meaning huge profits for companies?
Doesn't their existing infrastructure, and social dependency on that infrastructure, give them a somewhat legitimate need for a bailout? If other, smaller, more efficient companies can replace everything the telecom behemoths do, then let the big boys suffer, but is that the case? Can smaller tech savvy companies do everything the large telecoms do or are we talking strictly about broadband internet?
A couple years ago I was working at Guitar Center and our store manager had just been promoted to regional manager so we had a new manager coming in. They went out to lunch to go over some store specifics and one of them employees decided to break out the fog machine and fill up the new managers office. They came back from lunch everyone said their goodbyes and he left. The new manager introduced himself to everyone then went into the back to check out his office. Bye now the room was absolutely packed with "strawberry" fog, he opened the door, walked in, and sat down like nothing was wrong.:)
If you think my points are invalid argue against them. A troll is a troll because they say things that are illogical, unrelated, untrue, or unsupported. You're "argument" is unsupported... please back yourself up, I'd like to read it!
I fail to see how is EASIER than any other OS. A basic install of any operating system on any decent set of hardware is going to be equally easy to use. I use two Apple iBook's for music, not because I think the hardware is superior, but because my software isn't available for Windows yet. Most people that use Apple computers don't use them for what they are best at (multimedia, audio, video, etc) so they've basically spent anywhere from $500-$1500 more than a better equipped PC for absolutely no reason, they aren't benefitting from "ease of use," they aren't benefitting from the power.
And getting people to switch from their Mac to Windows? Why even spend money on that effort? Windows machines may have been more difficult to use 15 years ago, but they've caught up... anyone who still thinks they are more difficult to use hasn't tried one.
In my experience as the "computer guy" in my circle of friends I find that 95% of their problems come from using crappy software (and stuff that installs spyware) or using crappy hardware (e-machines).
If you can't figure out the "start" button good luck trying to interface with OSX... (how is clicking start -> programs -> microsoft word harder than clicking Macintosh HD then searching around for your software? hm...)
I think the Windows interface is highly functional, but I don't understand why nearly ever new linux GUI I see looks almost exactly like Windows. Why not do something different?
And then you go back to abstraction and stylization. The only difference is at one point it was necessary to abstract and stylize and in the near future it'll simply be more interesting.
In June I went on a road trip from through Washington, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon, and back to Washington... I saw two cars with my license plate number. How about the probability of that?:)
Rebirth/Reborn is for the very lowest end of electronic music creation. How about a Linux version of Max/MSP? Cycling '74 is supposedly releasing the Windows version in October, but they've said a Linux version is simply unlikely.
Max/MSP is the kind of stuff that geeks really get into, it's basically a programming language for sound... somebody make a Linux clone of this!
Junk mail? I do have to pay for the recycling bin it gets dumped in, and indirectly for increased cost of postage. We all pay for the amount of pollution it takes to make paper and deliver the mail.
Even when there is an obvious and undebatably better system (not saying, necessarily, that tactile is, just posing a situation) Americans are extremely unwilling to move themselves outside of their bubble of safety. Some examples... metric, dvorak, etc. The mouse and the keyboard may be slow and even the most "ergonomic" setups have proven to be really damn unergonomic, but that doesn't really mean a thing to the vast majority of the American populace. Hopefully, American stubborness won't adversely affect the development of tactile systems, I'd really like to see what they can do.
Three -1 posts and it's already slashdotted... I'm sure it'll be a couple hours until it gets back up, so I'll ask my question here, it may not even be answered on the site.
I remember a couple years back reading an article that said solar panels could absorb 3-5% of the energy that hit it. This struck me as an amazingly small number and I immediately imagined the potential of greater absorption rates. Does anyone know what the most current solar cells can absorb?
Thanks for all the alt-f4 replies... I'm not a newbie, I know all about alt-f4.:) These popups aren't just barless IE windows, they don't even have an icon next to them on the start bar. Very bizarre things, it doesn't happen that often, when it does it's normally for home loans or something in that vein.
But what I do get annoyed with are pop-up ads that pop-up new ads when you close them, pages that automatically ask you if you want to install "useful" spyware, and pop-up generators. Another sort of ad that I've just started seeing proliferate are the ones that pop up in their own window that doesn't seem to be a browser window, no status bar, no scroll bar, no file/edit/etc, no max/min/close. The only way I've found to close these is by ctrl-alt-del'ing (sorry I use W2K:) ).
It's a good thing companies are getting wise to how annoying these are though. Good stuff...
Just wondering if anyone has any solutions that would be easy to implement and hard to get around...

I thought this was about some new car club for cool people.
How long it'll be before somebody decides to print that, scan it, ocr it, and repost it...
The random bomb that used to pop up using Mac LC's... not explanation, just BOMB. That used to freak some people out.

with MacOS 9.2.2... like I said before... my software doesn't support OSX yet.
As a PR rep wouldn't this just be doing her job in promoting Microsoft? :)

How do they support piracy? I'm not familiar with the issue, please go into more detail...
Arrraarrrrahhhh!!!!
Developers developers developers developers
Weird... I thought somebody would have done it by now... I've had sex with two people on it, yet my name isn't there. That's ok by me. :)

Which means there are about 6000 people exactly like you.
