Well, it's going to be over a month of healthy air, counting the run up and the two weeks of Olympics.

Funny you ask, because I have thought the same thing several times as I stroll the streets on a clear day watching parents and children play in the dapple sunlight, and wonder if the joy would drive people to demand clean air.

Unfortunately, a decent economy and a government without citizen representation mitigates the public's desire or ability to do anything when things go to shit. The people running those 350 factories aren't exactly powerless either.

Lastly, there are normally long stretches of clean weather in the late fall in Beijing, so people have experienced clean air before. Despite misconceptions to the contrary, Beijing does experience the occasional clean day or week following rains or winds blowing in the right direction.

  4. Herd Mentality and Opinions on Batman Discussion · · Score: 1

Disclaimer: I haven't seen the movie yet, but I suspect I will find it quite entertaining as my requirements for action blockbusters are not that high.

What I find interesting is the mass hysteria following this movie. This mix of massive direct and guerrilla marketing, dead lead, and actual excitement of fans have driving the hype meter into the red zone.

How much do you think the crowd effect modifies people's opinions? If all the critics came out panning this movie, what would the average punter be saying about it?

Some supporting evidence that something is awry is here: IMDB's user comments. If you go to the last 10 pages of comments or so, you'll see hundreds of reviewers that universally loathed the movie, then a gradual rise in ratings until virtually every reviewer gives the movie a 10.

    Any explanation for this?

There seems to be a lot of incredulity about Beijing's ability to clean up for the Olympics, but you are all forgetting that the government here is doesn't have the same limitations of a democracy, and can implement massive policy changes immediately. There are shutting down over 350 (!) factories down here, and have taken 60% of the cars off of the road. Most construction has stopped. I was here on Sunday, the first day this process went into effect, and we had a brilliant blue sky. Things are a little hazy again today, but they're not done shutting down everything yet. Expect a relatively pollution free Olympics. Sorry to rain on your hate parade guys. This is only a temporary solution though, which is amazing considering they spent 40 billion on infrastructure change to support the cleanup effort.

Honda doesn't do this because if they did no one would buy their cars, but I wouldn't be so sure that they aren't legally free to create such contractual obligations if they so wished...

If a company wants to go international and drop all the benefits received by being a US company, then what you say is true.

First problem: The software-using community is not a monolithic entity that makes these types of decisions
Second problem: Even if we were a hive-mind borg-like entity that the submitter implies, how do we create a consensus and enforce it?
Third problem: With the advent of networking, no computer is an island, and the entire computing world is a massive and complex ecosystem. Closed source and open source solutions WILL interoperate, no matter what some doofy-ass slashdot submitter cares to ponder. Is this person going to stop browsing sites with his "pristine" desktop that he can't access the source code to?
