  1. Re:really? on Crytek Thinks Free Game Demos Will Soon Be Extinct · · Score: 5, Insightful

You're still utilizing the trailer to determine if the movie is worth your time. The main difference is that you're "forced" to experience them at a theater (unless you get there late). I (and many of my friends & colleagues) look up trailers for movies all the time, and we also download game demos from Xbox Live / PSN / Steam. The point of a game demo is (or was, or should be) to build the same type of hype for a game. It gives you a small taste, and hopefully entices you to pay for the entire thing. Some demos really do help a game and get the name out there. Other demos do more harm than good because the game itself isn't that great. This can happen with movies as well.

I believe the big difference between game demos and movies is that games are both longer than movies and much more expensive for the consumer. If you lost $8 on a movie on a Friday night, it might not be as big of a deal as losing $60+ on a game. Even if the movie sucked, you could still have a decent time overall (making the movie a small part of a larger evening). It's a relatively quick experience. Many people buy games hoping they'll provide much more than 2 hours worth of entertainment. If the game is terrible, paying that larger price seems like even more of a loss.

Sometimes I'll see a movie if the trailer is bad. I'll almost never buy a game if I didn't enjoy the demo. The more expensive the entertainment, the more critical people are about it and the more stingy they are with their money, at least in my experience.

Thank goodness! I was starting to miss commercials when I watched shows on YouTube. Maybe Google can talk to all those BitTorrent guys about getting ads in those shows too. Hopefully it'll be very well targetted too, like luxury cars and tampons!

Someone tell me I slept too long, and it's April now. There's no way this is going to help make anything better as far as Guitar Hero games of the future. It just feels like MTV trying to feel (and subsequently purchase) the pulse of the world that pretty much laughs at them now (sans the 14 year olds I guess).

  5. Re:Opportunity costs on Lower-Price PS3 Mostly Upgradeable · · Score: 1

I know a lot of people have had problems with the PS2 DVD playing capabilities (I used to work at EB, so I heard plenty of horror stories). But I bought my PS2 about a year and a half after release, and I use it as my main DVD player to this day and it works beautifully. I've never had it skip (aside from dirty/scratched discs) or freeze on me, not once. I'm probably the exception, definitely not the rule, but I can safely say it works great for me. That being said, hopefully the PS3 will be built better in general, because I know that PS2's have their fair share of durability/quality problems. -Chris

  6. Re:Locked out content? on More Oblivion Re-Rating Fallout · · Score: 2

Honestly, are either of these incidents really that different than if Nintendo were to implement nude characters in super mario bros 3 that was unlocked through an a-b-a-b-a-a-a code?

Back in the day there was a game for Genesis (I forget the name) that had a code that let you see brief nudity. It was by Naughty Dog, and if you held down certain buttons as the Genesis was turned on, the Naughty Dog logo would be replaced by a picture of a topless woman. Pixelated cartoon boobs at their finest. That situation (and the one you describe) are much different from the Oblivion/Hot Coffee situations. There is no magic code to enter that shows you these nude models (or the "hot coffee" scene). You literally need to change the game files to see them. It's not something you're just going to come across in the course of the game. In fact, you can't. It's impossible without these "hacks" (or whatever term we're using for them now), which need to be downloaded and applied yourself.

If it really was a case of "Oh shit, I hit up up down down and everyone was naked all of a sudden", then I could see a justification for a lot of this. Much of it anymore seems like preemptive over-reaction as a cover-your-ass-just-incase move.

How about "The Revolution will change everything"? Sounds pretty damn good to me.

Wasn't there a part of the game God of War for PS2 that lets you jump into bed with two topless women and "interact"? And as far as I remember, it wasn't a hidden part of the game. Where was all the crazy controversy and ESRB-ness then?

  11. Re:Anakin Loses A Hand on Review: Star Wars Episode II, Attack of the Clones · · Score: 2, Insightful

Apparently someone is not a Star Wars fan. :) He even admits to not liking things about the first movies (the title screen anyway). But personally I think he's missing the big point. It's not about an amazing plot line, or the best acting ever. It's about the magic (which I know seems cliche, but bear with me).

George Lucas created a universe with the first films. In the prequels he's telling some of the history of that universe. It's a place of fantasy (not Tolkien fantasy...fantasy as in "a creation of the imaginative faculty "). It's a story you can get lost in. It's fun. And when you start getting too serious about it (like mr. i'm-unhappy-so-i'll-take-it-out-on-star-wars over here), you lose the fun and "magic" of it.

Yes, little bits of nostalgia are thrown in, but that's part of the universe. If every single movie had different characters, different aliens and different planets it wouldn't feel like one big place. It would feel like separate movies which happen to have similarities. It's all about showing that the different races interact throughout time, and not just in those rare instances. And also to introduce new elements (you can mention every planet in the galaxy in 2 hours). It allows for mystery, because you don't know everything that's out there, but you do have a sense of what some of this world is like.

And everything is supposed to relate to each other. You see Luke's future home on Tatooine because these characters are all part of a singular destiny. Some may think it's "fate", others may thing it's corny. Now we know how Luke ends up on Tatooine, and what links his family had there.

And I'll just mention a quick thing about the whole Palpatine-Sidious debate. The Jedi don't know who Sidious is. They realized his presence in Menace, but have never come in contact with him. We, as the audience, see Palpatine in both roles so we know instantly (especially if you've seen the other movies). And of course, as yoda points out in Episode I "Clouded is the Dark Side, etc." Meaning, since he's an incredibly powerful sith lord, he can conceal his presence, even across the room.

There's more I could say, but I have a final in an hour so I'll wrap this up with the following: I'll admit that I do understand where this guy is coming from. It isn't the best movie of all time. But like I said before, it's more about the magic than breaking it down into plotline, acting ability, and CG. Star Wars was great originally because it was something new. Everyone wants more of the original Star Wars trilogy, but they don't want the same old thing. It's hard to balance between making it the same, making it different, and (the real purpose) to tell a story. If this guy doesn't like this movie fine. No one's forcing him to watch it. Although people are exposed to the hype everyday, but then again they were with Spiderman, and The Matrix, and Lord of the Rings, but not as many people criticize that hype. Why? Because Star Wars is different. It's about the magic, but people try to say it's about something else. It's a story. Whether Jar Jar is used to tell it or not, the basic story is the same.

I love Star Wars. I love Attack of the Clones. It far exceeded my expectations. If you're not a Star Wars fan, then you probably wouldn't like other Star Wars movies. I wouldn't ask a 10 year old for a review of a broadway musical. It's a little out of his element. And if liking Star Wars means I'm gonna turn into an "emotionally underdeveloped adult", then fine. I'll remain a kid at heart. I have no problem with that.
