>>and the last 3 digits of credit card numbers (which should not really be an issue).
It is an issue. With those three numbers, I can possibly gain authetication from another company for another account owned by the credit card holder. "Can you just confirm the last three digits of your credit card please?"
It's all about gaining one little piece of information at a time until the full picture is seen.
We have the small claims court in the UK, and although I've never used it, I know people who have.
Most cases are handled by arbitration these days. Both sides post their evidence to the arbitrator and he decides the outcome. The three parties may never meet.
A lot of large companies do not "turn up" and they lose by default. When you're only claiming 450 GBP plus costs, it's cost effective if they don't turn up.
Display the time in GMT. State that the time is in GMT. Offer a drop down menu showing "-12h" to "+12h", save the option in a cookie. Or don't. No one from the licence fee paying British public would mind if it only showed British time.
Use someone else's time server. There are plenty to pick from. No need to run your own.
It took me 2 minutes to type this. Who wants to implement it by Friday?
Not to go off-topic too much but... The resale value is factored by the manufacture. The consumer doesn't have to think about it, someone's done that for them. The 2 and 3-year hire plans are sold for this reason. If you own the secondhand market, you control the prices.
And for my anecdotal evidence. I once looked out for an Alfa because they didn't hold their value. I got a car for a third of the price after it was 3 years old. I also bought a classic car because I knew I could drive it for 2 years, and probably sell it for the price I paid for it.
Try £10,000 on a box in the power station control room that's got "industrially secured" on the box. It's a firewall, fire blanket and fire extinguisher all rolled into one! It ticked all the checkboxes on the spec sheet. It cost £10,000. It's all we needed.
Except anyone can walk into the control room and push any buttons they like. There's even a USB interface on each PC.
Sure, this is not the grid (UK), it's the power generators. The grid is actually stuck 50 years in the past.
We had a server compromised due to 'it's only the last four digits'. One domain host required the last four digits for authenication, another host freely gave out the last four digits to anyone who asked nicely.
My name, address and phone number have never been published in the phone book - whatever one of those is. I've been paying for a land-line phone for over 20 years.
I do the same only with football bullshit jargon. None of this "getting all the ducks in a row" - whatever that means?
- We need to score from an offside position. - The business needs to be match-fit. - Our processes should follow the laws of the game. - We can't just hack down the opposition and expect a penalty.
Some laugh; some snigger; some look at me with detest and that's the match winner.
The credit card companies do have something to do with it. With the UK bookmakers I play with, a credit card deposit attracts a 3-5% surcharge, a debit card does not.
I bought a friend one because he's always losing his keys; losing them at my house *facepalm*
It goes off when he's got the radio on, when a door creaks, when dogs bark, when his phone goes off... Well worth the couple of quid I spent on it. muhahaha
It's common with old school gardeners to soak some cigarette butts in water overnight then spray the liquid on plants. It kills every insect it touches.
I've gone one stage further. Furniture board is cheap, furniture blocks are cheap, screws are cheap, edging tape is cheap,..., and my local builder's merchant gives me 20 free cuts from his super-sharp rip/cross-cut saw. I just supply him with a cutting list. I've actually had some fun designing things on Google's Sketch-up, and dimensioning is a breeze.
I do buy draw enclosures readymade, as they're a pain to make solid and the fronts are beyond the tools I have at home.
The edging tape is simply ironed on and trimmed with a chisel or blade. It would have taken all of 5 minutes to "fix" your backwards shelf.
Decorator's caulk is ultra-cheap, and it fills all the gaps. I'd even use on Ikea shit if I bought any. Its rubbery nature means it doesn't crack.
So, back on topic, take your job-stealin' robots and do one. I roll my own.
I disagree. This is about Cameron getting his photo opportunity and creating soundbites for the media. He's so shallow. He'll u-turn this when it's found to be unworkable too.
Who the hell stumbles on porn by accident? In my 15 years of internet use, I have never ever hit a porn site by accident. I have seen too many adverts for porn though; perhaps he should start there.
I do visit a site with funny pictures, and they have a sub-section where lovely ladies like to show their tits. Would that be on the list too? This is my concern. Where does it stop?
Oh but it does. It's locked away in the proverbial shoe box under the bed. No one has access to it. It's not used. The money is not making the world go round.
Having a bajillion dollars in the bank is seen as success. Having two bajillion is seen as a greater success. If one person has a bajillion, it just means that a bajillion people don't have a single dollar.
We're all fucked. One single person will eventually end up with all the money. He'll be the only one who succeeds in life.
The price stil holds them back, espeicially for the poorer citizens. You and I can see why buying a bulb for $10 that'll last 20 year is a good thing but when you're down to your last few bucks and you need a bulb, a $0.50 CFL is what you buy... and then you buy another one six months later. Maths doesn't come into it.
IF a lot of people were like me, they took it all with a pinch of salt. I knew the FBI were doing the same thing - the studying of video and images - and I knew they'd do a better job.
I hope to see it all happen again because, as you say, it was fascinating. I also hope people take an extra pinch of salt and don't make the phone calls, house calls and propagate the witch hunt.
I don't understand a lot of what you're talking about but thanks for taking the time to reply to the questions on here. I wish more people would do it.

A win for the little people is always a good win.
It's a cop-out, nothing more.

As least we don't have GirlsGoneWild, unlike Reddit.
Wait. What was your point again?

Thanks AC! You've made my morning!
More gems today please.
Point two is so dangerous.

That must be an Amercan thing.

Don't confuse your liking Gates and liking his money.
His money does great things.
Not always so.
Samsung's Vlingo on the S2 was a pig. Always popping up when you wanted to return to the home page. No option to remove. Arrghhhh, and all that.
"You need to root" was the mantra from the crowd. "Root, root, root!".
Using a 3rd party app were actually easier.
For those who want to know how:
1. Install Go Launcher
2. Use Go Launcher to unistall the Vlingo app.
3. Uninstall Go Laucher.
Not quite 100% truthful.

I've seen plenty of workarounds for this issue. Bypassing the cache is the theme of them all.
I too am on Virgin Media, but I don't use YouTube enough to make this workaround worth the hassle.
We don't drink Stella for the flavour.
Warm beer on a hot summer's day? Um, yeah, that sounds soooo appetising.
It's common with old school gardeners to soak some cigarette butts in water overnight then spray the liquid on plants. It kills every insect it touches.
It's triggered by the lack of light. Some plants are not triggered by light at all; it's all about time from germination.
I tried to find a list of plants but cannabis tops the search results, and tops the second page, and the thir... even "-cannabis" doens't help.
I beileve potatoes have had this trigger bred out of them.
Nothing.
