You and I had a very nice, very short email exchange many, many years ago. You ended it with thanking me, in case you've forgotten (ha!). I like to mention it when people bring up your name in connection to Wikipedia. I suppose it's my way of thanking you back.
Are there any email exchanges you remember fondly?
I think I was running Windows98 at the time and I had a mighty 2x speed CDR with no buffer underrun.
Within a few minutes of booting I had the browser running, my favourite forum open and I'd posted a screengrab of the desktop plus a few windows. I was very impressed.
It's a shame I haven't had the same experience since with teh many laptops I've tried it on, and with other live CDs. I understand WiFi has always been a bugger to get working...
They have been so many scandals since my birth, that naming them all would take too long, so I'll name the ones that are current in my mind.
Currently they are investigating themselves for a victim smear campain. Last year 50 were suspended for corruption. They've been labled as "institutionalised racists" in the past. They've murdered people like Ian Tomlinson and Jean Charles de Menezes in recent years. They've sold out to the national press, more than once.
I have an 'add-on' that fetches all linked images on a page and wraps them in <img> elements. One hundred 8-megapixel images on a page! No need to click anything!
My laptop, with 3gb of RAM, grinds to a halt. Hard disk thrashing; paging all those images to disk. Javascript engine moaning about taking too long.
What's a man to do? Fucking Firefox with it's bloated code and high revision numbers.
I jest (although the above is almost 100% true). I still think Firefox blows the competition away and I'm still suprised at the lack of love on Slashdot after all it did for us. Loading a HTML document with 100 large images is never a good idea. My add-on also does infinite scrolling and those 100 can become 1000 before I have to give up. I still remember the joy of downloading a single high res (1.3mp!) image nearly 20 years ago - how things have changed.
Plug-in fault? Firefox fault? Hardware fault? My fault for expecting too much?
No. There were very few decent websites back then. I remember websites that limited me to <1000 chars of text because their backend couldn't handle any more.
No. I did not enjoy typing a metric shitload of text into a form, only for the 56k modem to stutter, or the server to wobble, and lose the lot.
No. Requesting the complete 200kb of HTML when I was only correcting a typo was not good.
No. Things did not 'just work' every time. How can you forget "this page requires IE3.0".
No. Uploading a 1.4mb file was a pain in the arse and often failed. Dragging and dropping files onto a webpage is one of those things I really like these days.
No. Wait. Adverts?
The WWW is no longer about reading loads and loads of text.
My SGS2 has been updated three times since I bought it 18 months ago. On Tesco. Ballsed it up to fuck during last month's update because of all my mods and *cough*pirated*cough* software.
My wife's SGS2 has been updated twice in 12 months. On Tesco.
My daughter's SGS2 has been updated once in 12 months. On EE. Actually updates before ours does.
I'm currently running. 4.1.2, as are the others in my house. Lovely phone, the SGS2. There's no reason to get an upgraded one when this contract runs out.
Our two top bosses stood up in front of all 100 of us last month. The news was "We need to save 10 million Euros. No new projects are coming. Guess the rest"
One idiot started clapping at the end, then another, then another. In the end, everyone, except me, was clapping.
Gardeners have know for years that Round Up (glyphosphate) becomes innert almost as soon as it hits the ground. You only need to keep pets away for a couple of hours - it says that on the bottle too.
In all honesty, it's not so different to here if you stay away from the porn and memes. There's a wealth of knowledge on some of the sub-reddits. They have the inside jokes, just like we do here.
So, on my laptop, I composed a Gsheet that detailed my crosstrainer exercise routines. Time spent, calories burned, my weight in kg, etc. A couple of graphs and some conditional formatting. I was playing with the functionality more than anything else. Gsheet looked promising.
You're going to hate this, but I'm still using that same sheet today. I fill in the data, not on a tablet, but on my Samsung S2. It's perfect. I get off the crosstrainer, pick up my S2 (which has been sending music to my bluetooth speaker), tap the shortcut and enter data in half a dozen cells.
It affected everyone. It was something about being declared a contractor or an employee. One enjoyed sick pay and annual leave, the other not. A figure of over $30m was touted as a tax break too.
It was all a bit underhanded, from what I remember.
This'll get buried, but I have to post it anyway. I couldn't give two shits about Karma.
The six criminals who were convicted yesterday in the UK were caught because they had no car insurance, and the bombs were in the car they were stopped in.
Intelligence, like all these snooping methods, has been useless. The police got lucky, again.
>>There is practically no public discussion of just how fucked up the prison system is in the USA
Oh but there are, if you class the internet as public, which I do.
I'm not from the USA and I've been curious about the "Bubba" you all talk about. My curiousity has been fed many times over the years. *cough*Reddit*cough* introduced me to the many stories.
My thoughts on the matter are simplified as: Gaol (jail) and prison are different places in the USA. One is easy time, the other one is hard time. Keep your head down and do your time and you wont get bothered too much. Pretty much the same as the UK.
Jimmy,

It wont be submitted. These long multi-question posts rarely do.
Must resist... Bugger it... Me too!!!

Oldest and most corrupt?

'ello, 'ello, 'ello, what a 'orrible lot we are.
"Text on the title bar of every window and dialog box is centered, just like in Windows 3.11, Windows NT 3.51, and earlier editions."
I'm sold. Sod it, sell me ten copies. I really, really need this feature back. Oh how I've missed 3.11.
I know!

It's a nightmare on the desktop too.
Open Slashdot link in new tab.
Read comments.
Close tab.
Look at Slashdot landing page scrolled to the top!
Now where was I? Dunno. How far do I have to scroll back down? Dunno. May as well go back to Reddit.
Sort it out Slashdot. You suck.

I didn't see The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on your list.
We're a shite country and we know it.
Not sure I can go with "monthly", in the UK.

Social comformity grinds my gears.
You shouldn't have posted as AC.
Gardeners have know for years that Round Up (glyphosphate) becomes innert almost as soon as it hits the ground. You only need to keep pets away for a couple of hours - it says that on the bottle too.
You must be new here.
Welcome to the circus.
Slashdotters posting as AC when defending technology. Really? Honestly?
I read the threads upsidedown and the first few are luddite posts. What's happened? Which part of the dark ages have you come from?

Blocked in the UK. Oh no. The legal system in the UK is too strong to handle. Whatever will we do?

Censorship bitch.

Can you see a better method?
Have some more coffee. It's good for you.

You've got to love the SOGA.
If you buy a builder's brick, you expect that to last 100 years, and that's what the SOGA covers. All these warranties are complete bollocks.
I expect a TV to last a good 5 or 6 years, the SOGA covers that too. They gave you a credit because they had to, not because they're a Nice Shop (tm).
A pair of socks? Maybe they'll last 12 months. Not a problem.
(I know you corrected yourself about manufacturer/retailer)
They employer gets a certificate saying "Investor in people" in their reception. Must be a good compnay to work for and do business with. :p
Learn how to spell "paid" too! Unberfuckingbelievable!
True. True.
I keep showing people this when they don't beleive it could happen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American_internment
I thought the same but let me add this:
I have apps that can send texts and make phone calls all by themselves. It's a feature I want on a phone, but it still scares me.
This'll get buried, but I have to post it anyway. I couldn't give two shits about Karma.
