I actually currently work on another NASA research project that is taking a slightly different approach. Our model is to not only avoid no-fly-zones but other aircraft (using ADSB reports) as well as bad weather (this relies on weather reports from ground stations.)
The big difference between the 2 projects is that ours only gives possible solution to the pilot and then he has to accept the route deviation rather than removing control from the pilot.
I mean realisticly these solution are bleeding edge and wont make it into service for 20 years. Personally I'd like to see more of a grouund based solution but that probably because my background is ATC systems.
I actually got to see an F-22 this week. They are keeping 2 at langley and they actually opened up the hanger doors to let the public see (public as in non-military but still have to have badge to get on the nasa/AFB).
Then again if your in the hampton roads area you can probably catch them doing touch and goes.
One of the biggest growing area in GA and commercial is on the traffic management side. It doesn't matter how fast it can go if it can't get cleared for take offs or put in a holding pattern for an hour before the approach.
Its funny you mention free flight. I'm actually involved with a project at nasa doing research on free flight. Its pretty far out there. I mean you wont see any of this stuff for another 20-30 years but its still very interesting. something along these line is going to have to happen because current ATC systems wont be able to handle the volume in 20 years (not the computing power but the actual number of controlers to man the scopes). One of my friends was involved in this project. Its a step in the right direction but a long way off.
The ATM field in general is going to explode in the next 5-10 years. Pretty much everyone is doing research in this stuff FAA, NASA , eurocontrol , even the commercial companies are getting in the game.
I also personally really like the unix programming guide for system V (o'reilly book). Covers not only networking and IPC but a whole host of other things from file system to process monitoring (it says system V in the title but cover a slew of unixs).
not to mention the big boys 7?7 and to an even greater extent Air bus 320-340 are completely automated. Down to your ILS approach. 99% of the flight time is in autopilot.
There's an old joke about the co-pilot being replaced with a dog to make sure the pilot didn't do anything other than engage the autopilot.
for my selection I find barnes and noble online is the only one to have what I want. The other day I spent 2 hours checking 5 different music store looking for "Nightmares on Wax - smoker's delight" but saddly I came up empty handed so I went online and got it 13 dollars free shipping (took 4 days but oh well atleast I got it).
I find for my mainstream stuff iTunes is great but a bunch of my stuff is just to out there so I have to order it over the web.
Its the strength of the Candian dollar compaerd to the US dollar. In other words either its gaining strength or the US dollar is losing value. More than likely its a bit of both.
Yeah but your firewall doesn't offer a 4 port switch. I mean I love linux but I just bought a linksys 8 port switch/route/firewall/NAT for 100 bucks. I brought it home this evening and had it and my machines working in litterly the time it took me to plug it in and hook up my machines.
I've gotten out of my tinker stage and onto my productive stage. Thats why I pay a few extra bucks to get stuff that just works (like my new G4 iBook but thats a whole different discussion:)
Several installations... Hell when we put up my universities AFS cell there where over 200 other publicly accessible cells in the world and that was in 1998. Before openAFS was any where near primetime.
Personally I love AFS. especially if you want to access it outside of you little home network. I mean I used to access it over my cable modem from home and school was 4-5 hours away.
At the time IBM's cell was the largest in the world spinning something like a petabyte. I'm sure there cell has grown since then.
Every sound card I've used with FreeBsd worked fine and sounded great. And as for 3d it supports Glut and a mirad of 3d cards. Maybe not as many as linux but pretty good support. So why don't you do some research before you open your mouth and make an ass of yourself... or is that why you went AC.

Problem with lease/buy is the article is talking about commercial airliners ... you know 747s A320s not exactly cheap.
I just used glade to create my little Sin App.

Because when the machine stops booting , gets hacked , any number of reasons .... its good to have a console.

Atleast its being researched. I know a few of the guys working on the software models for the conflict detection and resolution aspect of the project.
Well for headless machines why do yuouu need anything more than a serial console. I mean we are talking about rack mounting machines.

I want a tivo to tape stuff when I'm not around or busy doing other things. the ad skip is just a bonus.
Don't forget VMS and Tru64 (used to be OSF).
Not that I'm saying Tru64 is nice to work with but it is stable as hell.

i'd still take a nice Dec box over an intel crap pile any day.

Its a shame -1 is the lost a post can go ...
How do they try to force you? I have one but I never felt forced to buy.
Tell me about it I work in the approach/depature path for Langley airforce base. the F-15 with thier afterburners on shake the roof.

Depends on system 9 vs. OS X ....
... these days the only time my ibook goes down is when I run the drain the battery
9 crashed on me all the time
Well DNF is better than DFL :)
It can come with a 1 Ghz or a 1.25 depends on which model you buy ;-)
I'm sorry but 256 is not reasonable. maybe 60 ... 100 megs I could consider but 256 for the cut down version. Please thats rediculous.
