as i said, a few notable exceptions (not being cocky, btw). but seriously - could you tell me the model of the card you're using? i'm seriously intrigued by this. how'd you do it? just drop it in or flash it? how's the performance?
...using components that will be in the much ballyhoo-ed G5...
amazing! where did you find a motherboard manufacturer that makes a board with a gigahertz fsb? and how did you manage to squeeze 8GB of ram into your machine? praytell, who provided your firewire800 bus?
i'm sorry, i'm just sleep deprived... but bitter. yes. very bitter.
the radeon 9200 pci by visiontek (well, really any video card not manufactured by ati or nvidia expressly for apple's use - with notable exceptions like a few GF3/4 cards [see xlr8yourmac for details]) will not work in a mac. period. there are no roms, drivers, anything for said chipset that support the mac. a shame really - my b&w g3's radeon 7000 is getting a bit gimpy and i wouldn't mind a boost...
when i say "how is this a troll?", i am saying it in reference to it's parent, not the root comment. this was in response to the modding down of the fellow who asked why this article was placed in the apple section. his post was, IMHO, not a troll, though the parent coments were. i think its unfair to automatically mod a reply to a troll as a troll. but that's just me.
one of the best macs i ever owned was a powermac 7600 that i hot-rodded to present-day specs (well, "present day" meaning last september and "specs" meaning those of a low-end G4 at the time).
let's see, it's got...
NewerTech G4/400 card ($280-something: i've got a friend who's an authorized reseller)
288 megs of RAM (free: scavenged)
Voodoo5 5500 PCI ($329! fer christ's sake! that was the most expensive part of the machine!)
Adaptec 39160 SCSI card (free: scavenged! would you believe someone threw this great card out?!)
macally combo USB & FireWire PCI-Bridge (like, $149... i think?)
Seagate Barracuda 15somethingsomethingsomethingN 4.3GB scsi drive (something like ten bucks on ebay)
Quantum Fireball 6gig SCSI drive - don't know which one (scavenged)
Two Apple MultiScan 15" displays (got the pair of them for $20 at a church tag sale)
Kensington TurboMouse 5.0 (five bucks from the "misc." bin at a local computer shop)
i gave it a nice coat of flat-black spray paint to make it all stealth and whatnot. i had it all set-up with two monitors... damn that machine was cool. people were amazed by the mouse moving (jumping!) from screen to screen. i even fooled around with yellowdog and linuxppc for a while. my little old powermac could hold it's own against the newer machines of the day (mostly because of the graphics card and the NewerTech card). sadly, just a few weeks ago i retired it for a blue-and-white g3... my next project!
actually, this is pretty on-topic. in the article's description, the writer says "is not disseminating" when the word "now" would be far more appropriate. (read: correct)
this confused me a bit at first until i did a double take and realized how the sentence was supposed to read.
and before the days of intel's purchase of ARM and all their technologies, the apple newton messagepad 2x00 series ran on strongarm processors... and doesn't apple still have a stake in ARM's tech stuff... ?
nevermind... the strongarm is way too underpowered for a desktop
How many PPC BeOS apps were there when the BeOS stopped being something a lot of people did?
when was BeOS ever something "a lot" of people did?;-)
seriously though, i ran BeOS on an old ppc 603e powermac since DP4 but eventually i gave up on it after release 4.5... when the company started going all crappy
the sleep indicator light? you have a problem with that? you think it drains the battery? sir, you are an imbecile.
first, there is not a pee-cee or mac laptop on the market without a sleep indicator. it's standard equipment, and has been since the days of the powerbook duo 210 (c. 1991).
second, do you really think that a tiny pulsing led, drawing a fraction of a watt of energy and well under a volt of electricity, would really have much of any effect on a 47 watt-hour (55 wh on the 14.1 inch model) lithium-ion battery? that is, unless that green led is actually a super-tiny halogen bulb fresh out of apple's skunkworks.
where nerds don't have to drink alone with their imaginary friends!
yeah! let's pick on microsoft! that's always timely... and funny!
they also have ratings of "what a massive dump i just had." i wish i were kidding, but it's true.
it's a theroretical situation, you ass-hat.

step 3) ????? step 4) profit! i couldn't resist.
a little bit, yeah ;-)
keychain has been a part of the mac os since OS 8, albeit not it it's current unix-ized form
first post! oh, i feel so dirty...

yes, the G4 was also developed in germany alongside the V2 (rocket, that is).
oh, i just slay myself sometimes...
the G4, btw, is also known as the 74x0 series.
how is this a troll? perhaps it's time cowboy neal backs out of the commander's taco and works on some decent moderations.

think about it. dummy.

i hate stupid people
apple has been advertizing the Xserve not only as a server but also as a rackmount for rendering farms; now doesn't the ddr seem a bit more logical?
