Mandrake 9.1 was a great introduction to Linux for me, but subsequent versions got more and more bloaty. I never got the sound working in the old laptop I was trialling it on. All that "Join the club" stuff was irritating, so when Kubuntu Dapper Drake was released, that was the end of Mandriva for me.
And the laptop? Xubuntu Dapper Drake with working sound. Well, one duck worked...

As others pointed out though, once you authenticate and start using that account, you (or your evil spoofer, and how can you prove otherwise) are on record, whether through MAC or account used. And your ISP will roll over and hope to just be tickled when presented with that subpoena/court order...
I'm not a participant in this particular activity, but from other experience I can tell you that once you've experienced someone else's indifferent rip, you're more likely to get hold of the media to see if you can do better.

No ISP records of IP lease to MAC?
No ISP records of authentication by MAC to ISP?
