When Java SDK went from 1.1.x to 1.2.0 they decided that they had made lots of big changes (IIRC Swing and Collection.. possibly Inner classes *shrug*) so they called it Java 2. However when they went from 1.2 to 1.3 they hadn't made too many major changes so they didn't bother and the same for 1.4. There are lot's of changes in 1.5 so I guess they thought they should give it a new number. However Java 2 version 5 is stupid as is J2SE 5 and J2EE 5 - all very confusing for everyone.
The preceeding 1 has never really meant anything it has been there since Java has been called Java IIRC. So really they have just dropped a superflous digit from the front of their version numbering system. Think of it as a refactoring...
Anyway most spam is orchestrated from the US and a smaller but significant proportion comes from the EU. These unions have international agreements on law enforcement - let's start there.
Spam just needs to be made illegal in all countries and investigated like any other international crime (e.g. extrodition orders, sharing of information across borders, copperation on investigations).
Why we need a different mechnism for capturing these Spam criminals is beyond me.
I stopped installing Real on any machine some years ago. I got fed up with it changing my homepage, installing crapware and altering my mime settings. Since then I have stopped using Windows at home but haven't installed Real Player on my Linux boxes just because of my lack in trust of software coming from Real.
What's my point? Well I'm just suspicious because this sounds like a major turn around. Next thing we know Gator will bring out a spyware removal tool.
I hope it goes well because I would love to play the ram feeds from the BBC and other sites on my Linux box.
The first torrent of this album was uploaded to the most famous of the torrent sites on the 4th June. This DRM thing is obviously pointless. What's the point DRMing in one market and not another - the Internet doesn't respect physical boundaries.
If I was feeling cynical I would think they are just doing this for publicity.
This is currently available in the UK. Which is a mobile modem for your laptop. Obviously there are other usages, like in car internet (not for the driver!), iPOD could connect to itunes to get tunes you want when out and about. It's not just about phones...
There is no mention of what the cost is or indeed what the price model is. Do you pay for time, bandwidth, QoS?
Having a high bandwidth connection is all very well but if it costs $10/Mb then ill just wait until I'm at the office to connect.
Technologies like this are only useful to the vast majority of people once a certain price point is met. I imagine there is a large cost to recoup be the OpCos so it will be sometime before we can all sling a 3G modem in our laptops and forget about it.
I would like the ability to completely uninstall IE from windows machines. That would require that IE is loosely coupled with the OS and that in itself would be a huge improvement.
I thought is was widely accepted that clock speed means nothing. Would a G5 2.5 GHz be comparable to and Intel check with the same clock speed or a AMD 2400+?
The dual thing is pretty cool for a pre-build box though...
MILLIONS of paying subscribers aren't even aware that you COULD do this kind of thing.
I see they are contributing marketing to the consumer benefit. Informing people of what they really want.
MILLIONS of paying subscribers can't, without the help of friendly set-top boxes.
Chances are if they can operate any of the number applications that will allow them to do this now they aren't going to be interested in an expensive set top box and subscription to do it either.
Seriously I can do all this stuff now. These companies are so far behind the curve technologically one would be forgiven for thinking they don't deserve to make any money out of this. I'm struggling to see where they are adding value to the consumer.
Allow a co-worker to use your company laptop. Then take your laptop home - grab the NTLM hash. Apply dictionary and or brute force password checks against it at your leisure. Then go back into work connect to the network and log on as them.
I've always found it stupid that you can log on to a windows domain without being connected to the network assuming you have sucessfully logged onto the domain with that machine.
I'm assuming that a windows machine keeps a copy of every username and a passord hash (NTLM?) used to log in to any domain locally somewhere on the harddrive.
That is scary news really especially in hotdesk/shared desktop environments.
Isn't there something along the lines of "Client side security is no security at all" in Microsofts security axioms. Can't even follow their own standards.
As Microsoft market share on most its products is usually in the mid 90% range they must be somewhat disappointed by this outcome. I'm sure Longhorn will have much better zombie spam machine.NET support.
If you are running linux, bsd, mac or anything but windows you're out of luck there is only a windows client. I don't care enough to get this working under wine.
Have a system similar to the old patronage system. Where artists (read: animator, recording artist, film director) set up websites where people can "donate" money to their next project. Once a predefined amount has been raised they go away an make the film/track/album/cartoon and put it up on the Internet for anyone to download. Those who don't have Internet access can buy a copied version from anyone willing to provide that service.
Those wishing to break into the industry need to make a name and fan base for themselves so that people will be happy to donate money.
I think this better exploits the tenants of capitalism than the current system of falsifying scarcity.

Looks like their server has some Ill Communication they had better get their root down
Wouldn't it make more sense to work with OO.o not against them?
It's not really for use with your mobile phone.

Anti-DMCA Bill
I would have thought Mr. Gates would be pro-DMCA.
Lame joke I know.

I thought the last article said changing passwords was a good idea! Make your minds up.
I jest of course.
Yes, that's not the point.

Good on you Gentoo team - I wish you every success.
I might even put my money where my mouth is onces it's tax deductable.
Any plans to do the same in Europe?
As Microsoft market share on most its products is usually in the mid 90% range they must be somewhat disappointed by this outcome. I'm sure Longhorn will have much better zombie spam machine .NET support.

Does anyone know of any significant applications developed using the Mono Linux API stack yet?
Also will the applications I write with this stack work on Windows?

INAL but you can't copyright a number.
