    Yeppers. Just like the tractor and harvester. Between them they displaced 80% of human jobs (farm jobs pre-tractor were ~85% of all jobs, now they're around 5%).

    I find myself curious: where did you find the "20% decomposed plastic bags" figure? TFA only mentions that 73% of mesopelagic fish had some amount of microplastics in their stomachs, without mentioning an actual amount....

    Absent a source for your number, I've got to assume you're just scaremongering (IOW you made up a scary number to try to bolster an argument - your prviliege, but I don't have to buy into your argument just because you have a scary, made-up number)....

    "arms" is vague and was probably never intended to allow individuals to own WMD.

    Does the word "privateer" have any meaning for you? The Second Amendment was accepted as allowing civilians to own cannon-armed ships at a time when cannon were the most powerful weapons that could be made.

    So then why won't the Republicans even entertain sane gun laws, such as requiring proof of attendance of a free class that teaches basic firearm safety, laws, and handling/marksmanship before purchasing a firearm/getting a carry permit, along with a yearly recurrent training covering those same topics?

    I dunno, maybe it's that Second Amendment thing? You know, the one that has "shall not be infringed" in it? You do know that "requiring proof of attendance" is an infringement, right?

    Half of mobile game revenue comes from just 0.19% of players. When you've got numbers like that something is very, very wrong.

    And what, exactly, is "very wrong"? That 0.19% of players are complete idiots? Or that 99.81% are fairly sensible?

    Personally, I wouldn't have been surprised if the "idiot fraction" were much larger than one in 500, and it doesn't terribly bother me that one person in 500 is dumb enough to try to pay cash to "win"....

    Did you look at your link? A linear regression on the annual mean sea level gives an increase of 3.35mm/year. That's huge. Consider that the average elevation in Tuvalu, the whole country, is 2 meters.

    So, a problem in 500 years or so, then? Yah, I'll remind my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren to remind their great-grea-great-great-great-great grandchildren to look into fixing things before they get out of hand....

    You think most people have less than $1k in the bank, I.e. the repeal of NN will be a significant chunk of money to them.

    No, he doesn't think this. Unless he believes (as you seem to) that 40% is "most people"

    Note that 60% not caring is "most people", but 40% not having $1k is NOT "most people"....

  20. By the way, the testing topic is linked to why I have doubts about the economic utility of the reusable boosters. They add a great deal of weight and complexity to the launch vehicles, but the costs of testing and repairing them for another flight are comparable to producing new equipment. I think it might be better to focus on ways of producing the new equipment less expensively for single use.

    And yet, SpaceX manages to make money selling launches at a lower rate than anyone else. You'd almost think that your objections also occurred to them, and they worked out a solution....

    Which criminals were those? The characters in the book were the descendants of criminals (sort of like Australians), not the criminals themselves (remember the phrase "new chum"? Those were the criminals, to the extent anyone in Luna was a criminal).

    It should also be noted that both sides in a judgement generally had friends. Comes a point when you're better off accepting an adverse ruling by a "judge" than you are starting a small-scale civil war....

    Since sites like Slashdot started offering Facebook Login as a login option.

    Not like you're required to use FB Login to /. or anything. From someone who pays attention to security issues, FB login to third party sites seems more like a nightmare than a "good thing"....
