The American and British legal systems grew out of English common law
That might very well be the case, but I think it's pretty certain that this case would have been over in the UK by now as well. Plus, the loser would have to pay all court costs, which is why we don't get so many ridiculous cases in the first place.
Exactly. My advice (as someone 10 years in the industry) is to avoid ANY company that in any way approaches the description of "corporate". I went straight out of university into a large corporate and lasted 2 years. It was the worst 2 years of my life. I didn't feel like I contributed to anything worthwhile. And anything I did contribute, the managers took the credit. I was just a number.
After that experience I told myself I'd only ever work for small companies. And it was a much more pleasant experience. It also taught me how to operate as a small business in the IT sector (you're a lot closer to all levels of the company) and I was able to take that experience and start my own company, which is even more satisfying.
Don't become a wage slave for the rest of your life. You'll regret it later. Sure, working for a small company can be seen as a bit of a risk, but there's no such thing as a job for life anymore anyway...
Don't know about Montezuma's Return, but I often get a serious case of Montezuma's Revenge after visiting my local Mexican restaurant and I'm not a fan...
Exactly. Been there and done that myself after the company I was working for got taken over by a US company. The new US owners wanted to patent a whole bunch of stuff that had been developed in the UK. They wanted the developers to put their names to the patents. I refused. They told me if I didn't agree I'd be first to go in the upcoming layoffs due to the merger. I jumped before I was pushed.
The company ended up going bankrupt in the end and the people who sold their souls ended up losing two months pay due to payroll not running and didn't get any redundancy payments from the administrators either. It's called karma I think...
If it doesn't include DWR (probably THE most popular Java AJAX toolkit) yet includes a Microsoft offering then the article is effectively rendered useless...
but what have doubtless been much bigger culprits for the bulk of the destruction have been marauding armies, fires, floods, and simply the ravages of time as old manuscripts decay without having been copied.
And at least two of the reasons you state are more than likely to have been instigated by the church...
You need to get to the source of the problem rather than blaming someone with "no empathy". This whole "it's really hard to get a job these days" seems to only be a problem with the US economy as far as I can see. For example, the company I'm currently contracting at has been looking for 9 permanent Java developers since March. So far they've found 1. The salary and benefits are very good too, well above average for the area. Over here in the UK there are more jobs than job-seekers and employers find it really hard to find employees. Those looking for jobs can afford to be very picky about the jobs they'll accept.
So, shouting at the grandparent is shouting at the wrong person. You need to shout at your government who, from this distance, lookslike they're happy to waste billions of dollars in military hardware every week, but don't actually give a flying fuck about the ordinary citizens of the country.
A "cup of tea" sells reliable time tried products, but "Now, Now, Now" sells new products. Both are not without merit.
Again, not in my world. Well thought out and stable products interest me. Start-up time is irrelevent. As is running speed to a certain extent. And I'm definitely not interested in having the "latest and greatest".
I'm only 33 by the way, so you've not got long to wait to learn patience;-)
I think its because I've got a Mobility Radeon in a Thinkpad. It's unclear from the ATI website whether they are supported or not. Basically I followed the steps you've described as well. No dice...
Getting ANY of their stuff working under Linux is painful.
I'm running OpenSuSE 10.1 on my Thinkpad R51 with a pretty standard ATI Mobility Radeon and can I get the ATI drivers working? Can I hell. Always "no device for screen" or some such error. So I'm stuck with the OSS drivers which although are great for 2D, don't perform well enough for anything other than TuxCart.
On the other hand, the NVidia FX5900 in my desktop machine (also running OpenSuSE 10.1) was a breeze. Drop to run level 3, run installer, reboot, job done.
...the one you write specifically for the project you're working on. It has all the features you need, doesn't have all the bloat of the stuff you don't need, and is easily tailorable to the usecases required in your spec.
OK, you've been modded funny, but I just looked at your Sourceforge page, and your project looks very cool.
From what I see, you're definitely going to scratch one of my itches too. If I take a USB key drive into a client site and they have a locked down version of Windows (so no Cygwin), I desperately miss my *nix command line. Good luck with it, I'll be checking back now and again - assuming the scenario I've described will be possible when it matures a bit more.
First, major citation programs that are critical to published scholarship, such as End Note, will not integrate with OpenOffice.
And? When I did my MSc we did use MS Office (before the days of OOo) but we did all our citations by hand. It didn't make things much slower as long as you were organised. And if you're not organised enough to keep track of your citations, what the hell are you doing in academia anyway, and what the hell is your thesis going to read like?
In the EU you can, sort of. Certainly in the UK, the board of directors are held directly responsible for the actions of the company. For example, there is a charge of "corporate manslaughter" here where the directors of a company can be put into prison for manslaughter if it can be shown that any deaths were caused by the actions of the company.
Put simply, if MS do not pay the fine, then the minute Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, or any of the top brass set foot in the UK (and most likely other parts of Europe too), they would be immediately arrested for non-payment of fines.
Lots of people would like that. Contact nVidia and tell them this!
No need to, it's already there in SuSE. I run SuSE 9.3 Pro still and the proprietary nVidia driver is right there in the auto-update list. I'm assuming that it's there in subsequent releases too.
I was about to say the same thing. This looks like a scam to me - kind of like a Joe Job in the spamming world. Someone's out to hurt someone else intentionally. Then again, if the US had a sensible system where you only pay to make calls, this could never happen...
Voting with your feet is a useful tool of protest, but why not attack them on two fronts? It should be any individuals right in a free country to protest peacefully. That includes phoning up perpetrators of stupid laws and harrassing them (work hours only, at their office - not at their homes). Make their lives uncomfortable both in their work lives AND in their pockets.
This is a technology site and I don't care if you believe in God, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or Cthulhu himself. There is nothing more annoying than someone else pushing their beliefs in your face. So with respect, f*ck off and stop evangelising.

I don't have Windows installed anywhere, so I don't know.

Typing "init 6" and then making a cup of tea for when my machine comes back up is far more relaxing.
Not everything has to be done now, now, now. At least not in my world.

FGLRX is long gone. But I still don't get a great frame rate in 3D. I get the acceleration, it's just not very good.

To be honest, I really don't care in what form the driver comes, as long as it works.
