If those platforms lock you into languages and development environments that tightly, I'd be ignoring them completely and looking for something else to develop on.
Seriously, is that what the world's coming to? Is it the 1980s all over again?
Pick one main platform to begin with, but write your app in a portable fashion so that it compiles and runs on two or more. Writing portable code improves code quality even if you only intend to deploy on one platform.
Also, it's easier to learn another platform "as you go along" rather than putting it off until some arbitrary time in the future.
Books don't smash and break if you drop them. They don't have batteries to run out. The text is clear and legible. They don't have a reflective screen. You don't have to switch them off and on...
Pirates don't steal anything in the first place.
Pirates steal pieces of eight. I was making the point that bittorrent is a legitimate tool.
I'm one of these sad people who doesn't (knowingly) infringe copyright on purpose. I'm a UK citizen and I respect copyright laws since they allow things like the GPL to operate and I make a reasonable living working for large companies that use Free and Open Source software in commercial products.
I'm not interested in "pirating" all of this main-stream music, TV and cinema. Life's too short to spend it ingesting drivel. I utterly resent having to pay for it just in case I might decide to "steal" some of it. I am selective about what I give my attention to and I like to obtain it fairly.
I like to support my favourite bands. I buy their CDs (and I break English law when I rip them and FLAC them for personal use) and I go to their shows. My wife and I spend hundreds of pounds a year going to see our favourite bands (including tickets, travel, food and drink, t-shirts). None of these are top-40 acts, by the way. The last lot we saw were Voivod when they played in Nottingham. This year we have also seen Les Claypool and Slayer.
I don't go to the cinema. There's nothing on. It's all aimed at retarded 7-year-olds. I don't "bit torrent" any films. We buy anything we do want to see (and keep) on DVD, including good TV programmes like Frasier, Father Ted etc.
We don't do ebooks. They are an abomination. Books are to be printed on paper and read.
I do "bit torrent" my Operating Systems and they are "copyright" (sic) i.e. copyrighted: but I'm not stealing since they are licensed under Free and Open Source terms and conditions.
If people want to earn money, they'd better jolly well produce something of value that people are willing to pay for. Hollywood cinema and manufactured pop music ain't it.
I don't agree with Syria and Israel being allowed to join, but to be fair, part of Turkey actually is in mainland Europe. Granted, a very small part, but a part nonetheless.
Why should membership be arbitrarily limited by geography?
I wish I'd know about LISP 25 years ago. Stupid people told me it was "for processing lists." If only I'd known better. Functional programming gives you wings and a jet engine.
I wish I hadn't paid too much attention to people with limited imaginations. Just because they're older, have more money and shout louder doesn't mean they are clever or wise.
C++ is way over-rated but it's worth knowing because it's so widely used. Don't let it detract you from mastering C and learning scripting languages. Understanding object-oriented design is more important than knowing the latest trendy language.
Objective-C.
Just because software is Free/Open doesn't mean it's "cheap" and poor quality. I could have saved myself 2-3 years there.
A leader leads, provides "vision," leads by example, has new ideas, defines strategy. People naturally follow leaders.
A manager produces charts of business statistics, facilitates communication, makes sure that people are behaving, getting to work on time etc. and that the holiday requests are spread out sufficiently to make sure that enough people are working on the project at all times. Managers dish out the work between staff and provide a channel for communication with other teams.
Managers should not be considered leaders by default. They should earn it like everyone else. There is no reason that technical people can't be leaders without being managers.
So once again the sensationalist news fails to inform us. A lot of us pay for the news. Why the heck can't they research things properly and present the facts in context?
We are not all biologists. I'm an almost-failed physicist turned software engineer. I can't be expected to be an expert in things stem cell. I would like to hear rational and informative facts presented to me in a form that I can understand.
The Jehovahs once brought round a leaflet containing exciting news of this new stuff that "scientists" had discovered on the ocean floor. The same "scientists" who all believe that god is a fact and believe in biblical creation.
This new fuel source was going to provide all our energy needs without mention of any damage to the environment and cost of extraction.
Mind you, when the earth is only a few thousand years old and the end of it is nigh anyway, why does it matter if you ruin the environment?
I believe China is getting a bit god-botherery these days.
As far as I can tell, there is nothing magic or technically complex about Orion that would make it impossible to build. Further, I think by saying "Orion" they really mean Orion-like vehicles. I can think of at least two off the top of my head right now: the new Boeing proposal and Dragon from SpaceX.
Here's a cunning plan: Suppose you made a sealed balloon out of something insulating and containing no air. Now suppose you charged the inside and outside electrically. If you could get it charged sufficiently, wouldn't the electrostatic repulsion internally be enough to push the envelope apart, leaving a vacuum inside?
Another possibility that Boeing's seriously considering for their crew capsule is mid-air recovery (like that used on a number of unmannned return missions), where the capsule is caught by a helicopter as it's parachuting downwards, and can then be gently returned to a landing pad.
Imagine surviving launch atop a flaming stack of high explosives, the radiation of space and the hazards of re-entry to be dropped and splattered on the ground by a butter-fingered helicopter pilot.
So is there another machine on the network with the same IP address? Maybe some machines have software-settable MAcs and there's a duplicate. I had to LART a bunch of people several times because of those ones.
Is there a loose (ethernet) cable?
Has someone plugged something silly into the uplink port of a switch? (Did that myself when I was young and ignorant).
Maybe the poor machine is completely overloaded for some reason?
Maybe a Windows box is spewing out loads of traffic due to a virus infestation which is causing congestion.
"Energy Work" is just the term sometimes used for the spiritual/chi side of Kung Fu. Basically, you become aware of and learn to manipulate the energetic realm around you; it's pretty thick with stuff; people's beings extend quite far beyond their bodies in many cases. I've trained with guys who can fight and catch random objects thrown at them while blind folded, or knock you down without touching you. Neat stuff like that.

Wake me up when a biologist puts in a credible challenge.
I've listened to thousands of songs over the years on the radio that I did not buy.

Ah, I didn't think of that!

Lay lady, lay,
Lay me an egg for breakfast.
Stay lady, stay,
Cook me the egg for breakfast.
Do I win the internet? Can I also get to be a 1960s hippy?

Ignore Windows and it will ignore you.
Toddlers should be doing toddler things, not playing with computers. They should be discovering the world and learning to communicate and having fun.

Well said.
So Microsoft makes this announcement and waits for Java to wither and die because all of the hip Open Source developers defect to .NET.
With Java dead and buried, they roll out the patent guns on .NET.
Extinguish!
The moral of the story is that Free is Free and that large corporations will do what is in their self interest.
Those that have a vested interest in Free (i.e. everyone else) needs to take responsibility for the Free.
So, what do we have?
There's also something fishy in Baldock.
How will they be resurrected for Judgement Day when their brains are missing?
It will be a sad day indeed when the majority of the world does its business in JavaScript.

Its not that they are journalists but how is it that nobody in the actual industry ever goes back and calls people on what they said 6 months ago?
Tune in to Radio 4 in the morning.

Can this be verified experimentally?
