The human eye pretty much stops distinguishing framerate past 30fps
Everytime I here this I cringe. The human eye can most certainly distiguish beyond 30fps, especially when it comes to crisp computer graphics. Most people who believe that 30fps is the limit is because that is what film is usually the rate with which film is displayed. However, if you notice film, you often have blurring around the actual sharp image (including CGI movies). This is because they eye normally sees a slightly blurred image do to the way the chemical receptors are fired in the eye. Therefore they look more like you see in the world. However, computers are different in that they don't usually have this blur. Without the blur, a lot more frames are needed so that the eye blur occurs correctly rather then lots of little snap shots. I myself can tell the difference between a 60fps image and a 75 fps image. I can tell the difference all the way up to 110 fps where it gets hard. I've run into people though who had trouble with telling the difference between 30fps and 40fps. So a lot of it depends on the person. However, we shouldn't cripple everyone for some.
Ah Yes. Another dig at Microsoft. I am sure the Unix vendors and Apple haven't done the same. The only reason why I'm letting you get away with OSS, is because at least its free.
Sorry about this being one large paragraph. For some reason the preview button did not work and so I never got a chance to make sure of what is would look like. (Some forums I use will properly set off paragraphs without having to resort to typing html). Come on Cmdr Taco... fix the site. First 500 and 503's now this.
Everyone blames Carter for the economy of the late 70's and into the 80's. However, they fail to realize that it was the oil embargo which caused the failure. The huge skyrocket in oil prices caused a general climb in energy cost. These higher energy cost lead to less margin of profet and overall increase of cost for everyone. Thus rapid inflation began to occur.
While energy was cheap during most of Clintons term, OPEC decided they wanted more money for their oil setting off another rise in prices which helped to once again cause a repeat of the late 70's. We are continuing to see an increase in oil and energy prices which are further slowing the economy.
I would like to note though that the huge deficits run up in both the Reagan and current Bush administration are not helping the country. Just like if a company has a lot of debt, people do not want to invest, so to goes for the nation. Other nations are less likely to invest in a country which has a large national debt.
Of course in also speaking of economics we can not discount the rise of the Japanese economies influence on the US during the 70's and into the 80's. Once again we are seeing a similar effect with India and China. That is corporate CEO's see a way to make more money for the company. While this could be a benefit, sadly it is often used to just further help pad their pockets and get their trophy wives.
Hey I'll have you know that Doom I, Doom II, and the Final Doom all have memorable sound tracks. You just haven't played them in a while. I recommend you do yourself a favor and pull them out and run them under a modern engine (better graphics, more options). Heck I was playing it last night and I definetly remember that little tune.
I will second this. I have a bunch of cd's with the shiny tin foil. They are the ones that end up skipping. The scratches on the polycarbonate side I can usually just buff out. My CD's with heavy plastic labels have held up pretty well also since the backside does not come off.
I am pretty sure Doom 3 has already shipped. However, many places probably are not supposed to sell it until the release date. I had a few friends working at a video game store back when Zelda 64 came out. Since I had already preordered the game, they called me up that day and let me pick it up. This was about a week before the release date.
You could just look on the shelf. Most of the time they have a price per ounce already on the sticker. I see it all the time where the mid or even small size actually runs 10-15 cents an ounce cheaper then the so called economy sized.
With processors being as fast as they are now, it is actually more adventageous to do extra processing on the processor then to have to fetch stuff from RAM. I don't know about sound, but I know in graphics rendering sometimes you will go for an effect that requires more processing time if it will save you from having to access memory. At one time it was the other way around, you didn't care how large the data was in memory (within limit of course) so long as it was simpler and easier to process.
If you have that many things running, perhaps if you can try to cut that down. You might also mess with the prefetch settings. I load up about 7 apps and go from cold boot to desktop in less then 30 seconds. Can't say that for linux sadly.:-(
Um, last time I checked GF4 MX does support hardware pixel and vertex shader support. The support just happens to be really crappy at Pixel Shader 1.0.
Lose iTunes and use Winamp instead. Sure you don't get the iTunes music store. However, you will suddenly find you have almost 100 megs more free, and a much more responsive system. It is why I dumped iTunes 2 weeks after installing it.
I think even more fun is the websites which won't let me view them with the message I need to use IE or Netscape 7.0+. Got to love when a rebranded product will allow you to enter a site but not the original.
Are you running Windows XP? Windows XP seems to do a very good job at prefetching applications that you use often. I've noticed a huge difference between it and Windows 2000 on load times of applications I use a lot. Of course having newer harddrives with more cache helps out big time also.
Too bad for you about not watching on a computer monitor. Most computer monitors make any TV I try to watch look really bad, cept for maybe a few hidefinition TV's. Not to mention by making my computer double as the home entertainment system, it greatly reduces down how much clutter I have.
Most of the time if I get a scratch on a CD, I can usually buff out the scratch and the CD will work is good as new. However, I have a number of CD's which the oils from my hands have caused the foil backing to come off. I haven't had any problems with the ones with the thick plastic coating so far, however, many of the ones with the lettering on the shiney foil are to where I can't rip them and many times can't even play them anymore without skipping. Unfortunatly, the companies which made them don't think they should replace them for free, even though I would consider it a defect (it certainly haven't lasted that 50-99 years they used to brag about).
The dark black smoke is usually caused by too much load on the engine. The blue smoke you see is usually a problem with the injectors leaking. The fuel is leaking into the cylinder and not being burnt and thus coming out like a vaporized oil. Sadly, most of the time both of these are due to lack of maintenance on the engine, especially when it comes to locomotives. About the only time a locomotive should be smoking is when they are climbing steep grades (for a locomotive) over a long distance, and even then should be very little.
I can see where a diesel locomotive is not the efficent for moving passengers (at least in populated areas where it must stay slow) because passengers way so little. However, when it comes to moving heavy freight, a locomotive should be far more fuel efficent then the trucks used to move most freight now.
They don't have to ring to be damaged by the sound. It is just indication that they are being damaged. I can't stand when friends want to go sit next to the big speakers at a club, bar, or concert. I make them come to the back away from the noise if they want to me.
Deus Ex is almost best played as a Stealth Game. I really enjoyed playing as a stealthy ninja who only kills people when absolutely necessary. My only complaint was that if alerted enemies would turn towards you if you tried to run up behind them to knock them out (even with full silent running). Bots and Men In Black where you couldn't sneak past were about the only time I ever used heavy artillary.
It could just be the configuration I have seen at several places. Your running linux and connected to the NFS. You then su to root. You end up effectively root on the NFS server. Notices I said effectively. You still aren't root, however your able to add, delete, and modify other users files and probably the system files. When I asked the administrators of these several system about fixing the problem, all of them said their was no real way to protect it other then limit which computers can connect to the server.

FAT 32 is usually faster then NTFS on smaller partitions (under 32 GB).

The doberman launcher was even better. It even had target seeking abilities.
I've had good luck with my Asus board based on the KT333 chipset.

Or use something like gaim encryption. Of course you don't want to leave your private keys laying around on the box (floppy maybe?).
The original bet was for a subscription to Playboy. It was to Penthouse and Kip Thorne's wife was none to happy about it.
