Stop buying CDs? And what? Buy only downloaded compressed formats? Whatever. Obviously you don't own a Squeezebox or nice hifi system. Maybe you listen to all your music through some crappy headphones that came with a portable music player. Maybe if they find a way to do DAE off Vinyl I'll switch to that. (no, not the scanner hoax posted on Slashdot before). I want the freedom to choose the format my music is compressed in if it is compressed at all.

Slimserver is in PERL. Go download it. You can run the server software and use "Softsqueeze" as a client to get the hang of things. One thing for sure, the software player doesn't come close to the performance and cool factor of the hardware. As for the Squeezebox, it's a network device. No drivers needed.

  11. Re:Very interesting on Logitech Buys Slim Devices · · Score: 1

Don't plan on it. SlimDevices is in the audio market. They care about what and how you listen to your music. Troll the forums for video and you'll find very little. Video requires a dedicated screen of some sort wether built in or via a TV. The devices themselves don't have the horsepower for decoding video. The Squeezebox is to remain a seperate product for the time being. Prices drops are what many users are hoping for. At least for the Squeezebox. Probably not for the Transporter in the forseeable future.

You're very right. The original version was a rather crude product but it worked. The SB3 (same hardware as the SB2) is a much more refined product. Nothing else on the market comes close to it's performance. Sonos is cool but isn't as fast and responsive as the SB. Also, Slimdevices is a much more open community with an extensive set of plugins for obtaining information on the VFD. Personally, I only use the Alarm Clock and Weather plugins. With Logitech's acquisition there is hope of bringing the price down to a $199 point to make it more affordable. If you hit the forums you'll notice the "Logitech buys Slimdevices" thread quite lively with an actual Logitech VIP chiming in with answers to questions.

Because you're a n00b. Original post stated doing an upgrade which means dropping a new board in and hoping Windows boots or doing a repair on the new hardware so you don't have to do a clean install. Once the OS is loaded it whines about massive earth shattering hardware changes requiring you to activate RIGHT NOW!! so the world doesn't end. Sometimes you get 3 days. Well, if you can't log into Windows to install drivers to try and activate online you have to call one of the ever friendly barely speaking engrish folks over in India with a shaft job reading numbers all day and having to put with me when I call on an almost daily basis (I'm a computer shop technician). Then, one you're activated and get your base drivers installed, make a few changes, and BAM! call Microsoft again because you keep screwing up your computer.

Just an FYI, listen to the stupid recording, when it asks if you're calling to activate just press "0" to get transfered faster.

The onboard high-def sounds is respectable, the Gigabit ethernet is Intel so of course it works, the 250GB SATA II drive is flawless, and my DVDRW works just fine with cdrecord and Nerolinux.

On the other hand, my D975XBX works absolutely beautifully. I have the E6400 running at 2346Mhz with no issues. Onboard sound works suprisingly well though I'll be dropping an Audigy back into the box. One thing I can assure you is it does fly! My poor old 3Ghz P4 is left in the dust.
