    those sons of bitches blocked all "dynamic" ip blocks. That means that my lusers can't send email to AOL users. Normally I wouldn't care, but a single user noticed and is complaining.

    My ip has been static for 6 months, and a static ip through BelllSouth that I also control. I checked, but they have no whitelist or way to authenticate legitimate servers.

    there are hundreds of better ways than alt+f4.

    There should be project dedicated to "neutering" specific forms of advertising, rather than blanket-bombing as privoxy has done or focusing on popups like most other solutions.

    To hell with any site that does stuff like this. I won't block banner ads, but anything beyond that is an invitation for an "accident" to happen to their server.

    1. Beat the crap out of the disc and package. Stab it, crush it, bend it, shatter it, etc.
    2. Either send the original package, or the package in a sandwich bag back by writing "Unsolicited, return to sender!" on it and placing it back in the mailbox.

    I haven't recieved a CD in several months, down from once a week or so.

    If the IA-64 instruction set is similar to the IA-32 one, then it shouldn't be hard to wrote a program that converts binaries from one processor to another before running the code?

    By murphy's law, dynamic linking or primitive datatype sizes will keep this from being practicle.

    but possibly Kaffe or more likely Wonka could be built into the kernel.

    I think the important thing here is that the kernel's primary purpose is to run Java; it's the next best thing to a Java Processor (as opposed to a JVM.)

    The Linux kernal also has a lot more bloat than this one, maybe Minix or the PDP11 version of UNIX would be a better candidate :)

    seems to me that the thing to do is make "user.foo@bar.tld" where bar.tld is the server and foo is the host you gave your email to. A user command or webform would then be able to tell the smtp server to reject incoming requests for user.foo.

    Another idea is to not give your address out. I've only recieved 4 sams for my account, all of which appear to be from spambots. (let's hope they don't read /.!)

    What would be the best server-side spam filter operated by root, where upon request I could block spam with a particular title or source for all users?

    It's when the GUI takes over completely leaving the commandline to ruin. How do you type "rm -rf lame*.mp3" in a gui? "mkisofs foo/* > foo.iso"?

    I've used M$'s terminal-server client as well as rdesktop on my Linux box. It only allows so many people to login and the server quickly crashes under the stress. It was an NT 5 server with the latest patches; thank goodness I'm out of there.

    I've found Micros~1's complete dependence upon GUIs to be one of its biggest drawbacks. You can't just hop over to a windows box through telnet/ssh/rlogin to edit IIS's config file or play some music.

    Linux/UNIX and to a lesser extent OS X have the unique ability to be used on a varied range of hardware and access methods.

    To get this back oon topic, does M$ admit that 2k3server is just a minor upgrade like they did with XP(aka NT 5.1) upgrades from 2k(aka NT 5.0)?

    I still remember kicking the (late) last micros~1 box on my LAN while screaming "why the @#$$ don't you realize you're on the @#$@#$ing network!" (Yes, I know that you have to reconfigure msie, but a browser shouldn't care if you're on the internet or not.)

    Are the packages the same or unique? If the latter, why not merge w/ the original code and help us all out?

    Is this better or worse than the NSA's secure kernel? Why is a new distribution required if a kernel is all that's changed?

    You'd have to dynamically link the two. No static linking. GPL works can use proprietary libs, they just can't buser used by proprietary programs as libs.

    The point is that I can't GPL only part of my program file, while six lines remain immutable.

    The GPL allows you to use non-free libraries. Place those six lines in foo.c, GPL foo.h, and like foo.o to your final binary. Don't distribute foo.c with the rest of your app.

    Actually, this isn't quite the same thing as the doc problem, because a forker can cut out those lines and you can't call the entire package GPL.
