StarEmperor writes "This Washington Post story of grandeur reinterates the seemingly constant, but approvable, disappearance of the modern day pay phones, well known now as"rip off phones", mainly due to a small number of walkie-talkie like devices called "SELL Phones" being dumped into the mass market by the truck loads.

Many of these public phone unit devices, which history records ever so accurately as this is imporatant information to society, used to suck massive amounts of revenue from unwitting users by the dimes, often times piling up hoards of dollars called "hundreds" every 30 day cycle of the Roman calendar, which the operating company ran their pick-up cycle from.

But sadly we now have compassion on the loss of these blessings to society as there are more rich people now, or poor people willing to go into dept to aquire a mobile talkie thing, with mobile talkie things and the value and use of the permanent talkie booths has dropped to the point where they actually cost money to operate, where as before they were free to operate cause they actually made money, but now they don't so they cost money to operate. Ultimately the question begs to be asked, what's the value for the environment for junking hundreds and even multiple hundreds of non-mobile talkie things?"

I didn't learn this kind of algebra till I was in 9th grade, and these little kids were answering questions on a black board in their heads. (like figuring out the hypotenus (sp) of a right triangle) and they were all excited and raising their hands saying "I know, I know!"

Of course the reason Direct Instruction hasn't made it into mainstream education, despite the incredible wealth of data and research showing it works better than every other system used today, is because it puts the resposibility for children learning in the teachers lap.

There is no excuses for teachers if the kids don't learn with DI, because kids _can_ learn and it's been shown to work with the slowest learners.

Our current systems allow teachers to say "well the kid didn't learn because the kid [enter excuse here]" (excuses range from "the kids has ADD" to "the kid didn't pay attention in class") which always ends up with the result "it's the kids fault the kid didn't learn".

As a graphics person (and handy with scripts and recording commands)it is a rather simple task to simply select "Convert to Thumbnail" from my GUI's command menu (which I setup and have complete control over), 2 clicks.

I can also link my command to a keyboard shortcut, which makes it even that much faster. (unless you can do this with command line, this feature in itself makes it faster and easier than any command line control)

On top of that I can make my own GUI control elements which in can throw in dozens of simple controls to give me ultimate control and immediate access to any setting, filter or other scripted commands.

Another handy feature I have access to is recording steps and playing them back as a script and command. This is standard in Photoshop and Fireworks.

So we are both doing the same thing, running a premade script to do work for us. Only I can stay in the GUI where I did the image manipulation and not have to jump to a seperate command line window for this.

The only real difference that I see is that of typing out a command or simply clicking on one.

Here is a list of CODECS that MS media player supports. Supported Codecs

Now I know MS ain't to bright and all that and they can't even pronounce their own product names properly, but here's a description of their support for MPEG-4 codecs, but I am sure they are wrong and MPEG is not a codec... MPEG-4 Codec Descriptions

In case you don't feel like clicking here's a sample from MS MPEG-4 Video Codec 1 :

The Microsoft MPEG-4 codec is a low to high bit-rate video codec. The advantage of this codec is that it meets the standards set by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Use version 1 if you provide content to version 2.0 servers or players.

When he started he would go around to the classes and find that by 10am _most_ teacher WERE NOT EVEN TEACHING.

He'd find teachers talking on the phone, yacking in the halls with other teachers (what are their kids doing when they aren't there?) and even surfing the net.

After a year of him being their and cracking the whip at _lazy teachers_ test scores went up 12% across the board in 90% of the schools he was in charge of.

He is so sick of lazy and bad teachers he just wants to quit. The administration doesn't even support him on dealing with this issue. He says also that their aren't replacement teachers either, so the only thing to do is get these teachers to work.

He's not sure of a total solution, but for now there's; Manage the teachers better. Make them actually teach. Then make sure what they are teaching works.

Currently schools are teaching really lousy methods for reading. Of which the "whole language" method is used. This would be the equivilant of handing a first year CS student (with _no_ prior coding or computer skills) a sheet of printed code and then told to "absorb it".

I don't agree with many, many things GW Bush has done, but hopefully better expectations from teachers is one that will work/help our schools.

My friend is currently writing a grant for the Chicago school system to help them use the money they will get from the feds wisely (har har). At one point he lost it and chewed out 200 at an assembly cause they weren't listening to him. He says a group of "big" people are much worse to deal with than an unruly class room...

I live in the boonies in Minnesota. Small town schools seem to do fine for the most part and for my kids I am not concerned about the teachers, just other kids. It's the big city schools that seem to have most of the problems (and the west coast schools... ) which is one reason I left the big city and the west coast.

The first real step needs to be to enforce the most basic levels of work ethics and make sure that teachers actually stay in their class rooms during work hours and when in there actually teach their kids. And the administration needs to back up the teachers when they try to keep order in their class rooms.
