Even if actors' work doesn't require more talent or hard work (which is debatable), they're not interchangable so some lucky ones end up getting rich. I don't think there's any getting around it unless computer-generated "actors" ever catch on.
Is this the same Steven Johnson that wrote this load of crap two years ago?
There you go, in the olden days you would have been churning butter and hammering horse shoes all day instead of researching Steve Johnson on the fray. So I guess web surfing made you smart.
Actually, the real CPU (whore) hog is Firefox which peaks at 58%.
I think the problem here is animated banner ads. I like to keep a lot of tabs open, and I sorely wish there were an option to *not* spend any CPU time on tabbed pages that are not visible.
Well, there are sample images from the cameras in the article, why don't you both just look and see? IMHO that N90 shot on the front page doesn't look half bad, especially for an indoor shot.
Personally I use the phone on my PDA mostly for capturing text, so I do wish they had more shots of that.
I don't see how that would pan out at $50 / per. You mention throwing them in jail, and it takes hours to arrest and process somebody as I understand it.
if you encrypt your traffic and the FCC or some other Govt agency attempts/succeeds in breaking your encryption, could it ("they") be found guilty under the DMCA?
Uh huh. Right after a cop gives you a speeding ticket, and you issue him one for catching up to pull you over. Good luck with that.
Your observation about power supplies is a good one. Are there any safety issues with DC? Can you recommend a centralized DC power source that could be used for, say, a cluster of 100 PCs? Ideally it would come with wiring harnesses for cpu mainboards and hard drives. Also it would be nice if it the centralized converter could be placed outdoors.
My Windows machine at work is almost unusable because it's so loaded up with virus and spyware protection, and disk inventory software, that it basically just sits there and monitors itself all day. Whatever I need to accomplish as a user is apparently a distant second in importance.
I disagree, the slowed progress in PC speedups in the last couple years has been disappointing. Things really started to fall off at about 3ghz. 3ghz was released in 2002(!) over 2 1/2 years ago and we still haven't hit 4ghz, that says it all with respect to clock speed.
More efficient processors are only just closing in on 3ghz... pretty bad when the P3 (also reasonably good IPC) came out at 1GHz *5 years* ago.
Intel and AMD have clearly indicated that the good old days are over by introducing dual-core chips... nice if your workload needs that, but complicating the programming model (to multithreaded) is a concession to the physical limitations that are imposing themselves.
I wonder if NASA accidentally used months instead of years when calculating the lifespan of the rovers.
My guess would be "yes." Nobody knows what to expect from a Mars rover (not even NASA, really)... so set expectations for the lower bound, then pat yourself on the back for whatever else you get.
I am waiting for something smaller than the RAZR...I don't need a PDA, I don't need an mp3 player, I don't need a camera or widescreen video, I just need a bluetooth connection for a headset, backlit mono screen, a decent (simple) phonebook, and something that I can carry comfortably in my pocket. I'm not sure why something that simple these days couldn't be made about the size of a Zippo lighter...
Because the biggest components of a phone are the battery, keypad, and screen. Once you have those, adding an mp3 player and PDA add neglible weight and negligible expense.
Do you honestly believe the Onion was trying to trick people into thinking their commedy bits were official releases (or "sponsored by") the White House? That clause specifically protects precisely what the Onion does.
I guess you and I aren't going to agree on the interpretation, but personally I sure hope it goes to court. I don't think the Onion can lose.
Why should IT bear the brunt? Let's just open our borders completely and see how much cops, nurses, and mailmen make after we open up their position to everybody on earth.
Do you really think Americans should receive no preference in getting American jobs? If your vision is realized, then countries are just meta-corporations with no alleigence to their own citizens. In that case, do you think anybody will be dumb enough to join the military in their defense?
Over-paginated, yes, but I thought some of the results were pretty interesting:
Intel was very competitive with AMD, (I thought Intel was overpriced)
Dual-core chips cost a premium in excess of what they deliver
The Athlon 3000+ is 14.13 times more cost-effective for rendering than the Intel P4EE 840. Sure we all know there's a price premium, but but sheesh.

Doesn't say a thing about "so long as a reasonabl person won't confuse it with official endorsement".
Geez, why do I even bother if you're just going to quote something that supports my argument, then act as if you've just proven me wrong?
The presidential seal is like a trademark; it cannot be used without approval.
Says who? The law says it can, so long as a reasonable person won't confuse it with official endorsement. This case is just as idiotic as Ford suing Fordsucks.com with the argument that people will confuse it with an official site. The Onion is the very epitome of satire and the administration will be laughed out of court if it goes that far. And The Onion will get an incredible amount of free advertising.
How do you negotiate? How do you ask for more than they offer?
The only real leverage is if you already have another competitive offer. Do try to get several offers from different places if you possibly can. This is the only way to have confidence in accepting an offer IMHO.
That said, I'd say starting salaries for new grads are not usually that flexible. It simply is not possible to distinguish yourself that much until you have some years of work history to go by. I was lucky to graduate in better times and at one point was simultaneously entertaining offers from IBM, Motorolla, National Instruments, and a US Govt. Laboratory. But after I picked one, none of the others came back with a higher offer.
Why do we have this attitude that "what's good for consumers is bad for shareholders?" It smells of zero-sum economics, which I think is a load of crock.
Even in the case of limited natural resources, and in cases of monopoly? I'm just glad neither applies in this case.

Does MS make a localized vesion of Windows for S Korea? If MS quits updating that, it will eventually be unusable.
Personally I use the phone on my PDA mostly for capturing text, so I do wish they had more shots of that.

Err, I mean my guess would be "no"... in other words I think NASA was intentionally conservative.
I guess you and I aren't going to agree on the interpretation, but personally I sure hope it goes to court. I don't think the Onion can lose.

Then I suggest using *nothing*. It's free, and will work with the appropriate hardware and software add-ons.
