Now to the next obligatory statement; kudos to the gimp developers, it's a hell of an impressive piece of work. But now to the meat of it; Gimp isn't as good as Photoshop. There, I said it. If gimp were as good as photoshop, given that it's free (beer, speech, sweet, sweet beer), photoshop would just go away and die, but it's not. Adobe has highly paid proffessionals on staff that stay up nights making sure that photoshop is not only better, but orders of magnitude better, than the competition. Gimp is fine for some people's needs, but those people are not graphics proffessionals.

  6. Re:So why isn't the FTC prosecuting any yet? on FTC Officials Wary of Spyware Measures · · Score: 1

It sounds like you're making a case for the FTC, not Mary Bono. When you ask why they aren't doing anything you're really getting to the point; if laws are already in place and nothing is happening it's a failure of enforcement, not legislation, and that's a technical problem that could be corrected (maybe with some industry support) under current laws. Also, when you say that they (the fscking spyware companies) have shown no restraint in doing "whatever they damn well please", that makes me wonder what in the hell good you think more legislation would do. If they won't obey current laws what makes you think they would obey new ones? They won't. These guys are making money, and as long as there's money to be made off spyware, someone will make it. The best we could hope for with more legislation would be to force them to move their operations offshore. At worst, some of them would go under and new spyware companies from china, the ukraine, you name it, spring up in their places. At first glance, my gut feeling was, "yay, congress hates spyware too!" But Mary Bono doesn't know how to run ad-aware, or spybot, she doesn't know what's involved in having to download HijackThis or CWShredder to get rid of a really nasty browser hijacker. Although she may think she's doing the right thing she really has no idea what it takes to fight this problem, and she's probably not the right person to lead the fight. She's a congresscritter and the only way they know how to combat a problem is to throw more legislation at it. But this is a software problem, and it'll take software people to solve it.

    have you looked at the t-mobile sidekick? i bought mine the day they came out (oct 1) and i love it. it fits your criteria pretty well;

    a. desktop synch

not exactly, it syncs with a 'desktop interface' at the t-mobile website. i actually like it better because it's constantly synched. if i enter an address in my sidekick and the battery dies 2 seconds later, it'll still be there when i charge back up because it intsantly synchs with the backend server.

    b. a decent, usable screen/browser

more than decent, the 160x240 screen is excellent, as is the real (xhtml, not wap) browser. about the only thing it can't do is javascript.

    c. a smallish form factor (less than my currrent clunky rig, but super-duper small isn't a big deal to me)

i don't know how big your current rig is, but my sidekick is 6 ounces and resides in my front pants pocket all day every day.

    d. palm-like features (handwriting recognition, scheduler, phonebook, to-do list)

everything except the handwriting recognition, which it doesn't need due to the excellent thumboard.

    e. lots of third party developers and apps

give it a little time, the sdk just came out (in beta) last week. it's java, so i expect to see a lot of development in the near future. go to www.hiptop.com and and check out the developer forum. also see developer.danger.com

    f. total cost $100

i paid $250 for mine on opening day, but amazon recently had them for $50 or even $0 after rebate.

    g. good coverage (very important)

i don't have any problems in my hometown or anywhere i travel but, since i have no idea where you live ymmv.

    h. 1 meg/day of transfer for data

    unlimited

    i. under $50/mo.

two plans - $40 and $80, both have the unlimited data

    j. 250 primetime minutes, free weekends/nights

the $40 option has 200 anytime minutes and 1000 WEEKEND minutes. i'm not sure about the $80 plan but i'm sure it has a lot more.

i find that i can live within the restrictions of the device, and even the voice plan, because of the excellent data capabilities. i don't talk as much because i always have AOL instant messenger on, and i hit my corporate email with pop3 so it's constantly updated. oh yeah, it comes with a crappy (but fun) camera.
