    Actually, this was a great surprise! I thought that right wingers monolithically believed that want ever big business wants, they should have. National Review actullally supports the idea of the public domain, and doesn't think it's a communist plot to destroy the capitalist economy? Some things still do surprise me.

    The problem is that the private sector only cares about robbing and looting for quick and massive profits. Building a broadband network is a long-term thing that won't pay for any executives' Jaguars, yachts, vacation homes, call girls, and cocaine in a single quarter, or even a single fiscal year, so greedy businessmen won't bother. Since this network would be such a valuable public service, it should be publicly funded. After all since we elect our officials, and pay taxes, we collectively are the government.

    Does the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) know that the Rural Internet Access Authority (RIAA) is using their acronym? World Wrestling Entertainment had to stop using WWF, because it is the registered trademark of the World Wildlife Fund. Did the Senator forsee this?

    Another problem with the theory is that he thinks there were hyenas becase he found crushed bones. The article did not mention any hyena remains being found. Hyenas don't live on the frozen tundra! Given the evidence, I could just as easily conclude that aliens crushed those bones. Before mutilating cattle, they mutilated humans. Maybe the "hyenas" were their pets, El Chupacabra.

    If you friend has made so many enemies that people want to put him out of business, maybe his business is a public disservice, and should be shut down. Without knowing what company your question refers to, I can't say any more, but I will point out that it's not libel if it's true, no matter how negative, and it's not libel if it's only opinion, no matter how negative.

    I would like to read more about why you think greens and libertarians are the answer, but a long discussion here would be off topic, so I switched my settings to show my email, with spam filtering. Let me know why the greens aren't just a one issue party, and the libertarians not just anarchist bomb throwers, or fascists who will drop the "do as thou willst should be the whole of the law" mantra as soon as they seize power.

    Liberals are not always Democrats, and most Democrats are only Liberals when a poll tells them to be, but Republicans are evil facists, oligarchs, and theocrats 100% of the time. Even the worst democrat would at least be the lesser of two evils, but maybe it is time for progressives and labor to start a new party. Greens and libertarians aren't it!

    This much information is almost already available online, but there is way too much to absorb. The average idiot would just be confused by it all, and fall back on talk radio and the idiot box to spoonfeed beliefs and views. Money would still talk, bullshit would still walk. More freely flowing information would be no threat to American oligarchy.

    We can punish the entertainment industry by not buying their products. We forced software manufacurers to give up copy protection in the Commodore 64 days by not buying the crap, and by cracking the copy protection with programs like renegade and maverick. We can do it again.

    Once all the POS systems at Fuddruckers were down because thir windows based network was infected with NIMDA. They couldn't figure out how to sell hamburgers without them. Four people had to suggest using pen, paper and a calculator to record sales before the manager would do it. You are right to want to avoid windows, but you need to be ready to stay open if all the computers crash even on Linux. Keep the old style guest checks on hand, and some pocket calculators.
