  1. not my problem on Come Try Out Slashdot's New Design (In Beta) · · Score: 0

I use web based mail, have for decades. Many webpages just supply their own email form if they really want feedback by mail rather than by a public forum. I have no idea how to configure a browser to use the browser and web based mail rather than open a client like Outlook. And quite frankly, I don't want to know. Posting a link like that in a story is so last millennium.

Well, I looked at the new design, and my thought is that I'm going to miss Slashdot. Not only did I find it awful to look at, when I tried to click on the "we'd like your thoughts on it, too." link to let /. know, it tried to open Outlook, which I never use and will never use. Anyone who expects me to use Outlook is so out of touch that there seems no point in telling them not to fix something that isn't broken.

  5. get real on Two Years In Prison For Using Infrared Contact Lenses To Cheat At Poker · · Score: 5, Interesting

In such a poker game, the player does not willing expose his cards for either a spectator or a casino camera to see. If that happened then someone else sitting at the table would have a team of accomplices watching everyone's hands and giving pre-arranged signals. Poker is not played with spectators watching all of the cards in any player's hand. Even casino cameras are generally overhead watching the cards to insure that none leave the table or are added, but players wouldn't play if they believed that the casino could read their cards when they took a well guarded glimpse of their dealt hand. Too much chance for a player to be cheated by the cameras if that could happen, as it would be extremely easy to signal to a house player or shill and win hands. No, if the casino knew what was in his hands they were cheating. Most likely they knew because the controlled the deal and dealt him some very good hands, expecting him to bet big and then lose to better hands they dealt themselves. When that didn't work they suspected that they were not the only ones cheating.

  6. Your Bullshit is BS on Two Years In Prison For Using Infrared Contact Lenses To Cheat At Poker · · Score: 5, Interesting

You're leaving out something really important and the real reason that he got caught: the casino was cheating too. Otherwise they wouldn't know that he had good cards when he folded. When he, or anyone else, folds, they just throw in their cards face down and those cards are not exposed for all players to see. The casino can't legitimately claim that they know he was cheating because he folded on good hands unless they were cheating and knew what his hands were.

Even though you hid behind posting as an AC and started at zero you will likely be modded down. Too many fanboys here who pay Steam don't like their stupidity pointed out. And no, I'll never buy a Steam DRMed piece of software either. Have used it for some free demos, and had to install it to update a previously purchased DRM free copy of the original Halflife (upgrade now required for on-line play). But I completely agree that Supporting Steam is supporting DRM, and a very unwise thing for a supposedly intelligent on-line community to do.

Do they even know what they are building? There seem to be some claims that the center is a touch screen, but they give no specs or even say if the screen is color or just B&W. However, the exploded view and the only real photo of the device shows the center part as just 4 large buttons, no screen at all. I don't think they know exactly what direction they plan to go with this, and IF anything ever is released it likely will not be this.

They can call it "fully compatible" all they want. The real issue is that, unless devices that use it as their OS also have the Google Play Store app, then the experience will always be second class or worse. I've had devices that run real Android, but only get apps through alternative app sources like Slide or Getjar. This makes the experience awful or even dangerous. I don't see it likely that hardware running Sailfish OS will have access to the official Google play store, not when so many devices that run real Android don't. So this belongs more on a site of "news for chumps" than on a site for "news for nerds".

I'm underwhelmed. The top end quad core device is $130, and they want another $38 for "shipping" (Stated as "$18 to $38). Clearly a 2x2x2 device, even well packed, should cost a lot less to ship. And on top of that, the Android microSd card is "optional". In that price range I can buy a damn nice quad core tablet with HDMI output. Might not have eSATA support, but will have USB support and will have a color touch screen, battery, accelerometers and position sensor (and maybe a Gyro or even GPS) and a lot more utility. Or if you want to go completely low end you can still get low end tablets for close to the base price of this device.

You would be much better off buying a Pi, or hacking a ChromeCast or ever a hackable Linux based router. This looks to me like another "me too" device to profit off the community funding model.
