Can't help but think they messed up naming this one - everyone (in the UK anyway) is going to confuse it with the League of Gentlemen - a very twisted black comedy.
Alan Moore wrote the comic that this movie is based on, and he's British himself. It's a shame, I thought he and his work would be more well known in his homeland. He's not too famous here--USA--but I always assumed that was because of the derisive attitude with which most Americans view comicbooks.
The number of people in the US who are for the war varies dramatically depending on how the question is phrased. If they're asked whether they support military action in Iraq in general, the number is well above 50 percent. Asked if they're for the war even without UN approval, and the number drops down well below 50 percent.
This is just one more reason why polls are fscking worthless and the idiot politicians on both sides of the aisle who live by them are less than fscking worthless.
All the other systems have Dolby 5.1 capability, it just depends on if the games support it.
I think my gamecube is a great system, but it doesn't support true 5.1 as there's no digital out on the console itself. The best you're going to do is Dolby Pro Logic II; it sounds impressive on a good sound system but it isn't 5.1. One also has to keep in mind that, with Pro Logic II being a newer encoding, not as many audio receivers can handle it.
I'll admit I'm a real audio novice, so feel free to correct me if I screwed up my information at all.
Having a national identity based on culture and race is a BAD IDEA.
Ok, I agree with you on race, that's a no-brainer. But not based on culture? What else are you supposed to base a country on, arbitrary borders? Geographic proximity?
I'm sick of hearing him held up as the poster boy for nonviolence...
He should have tried it with the Nazis...
I'm not sure if this is a troll or not, but since I've heard similar idiotic sentiments in meatspace I'll take your comment at face value.
I'm what you'd call a pacifist of convenience. I'll go out of my way to avoid physical violence unless I'm not given any choice. I'd like to be a pure pacifist, but I unfortunately don't think it's practical in the real world. Sometimes you're confronted with a force so evil--I hate using that word, as it's been cheapened by the retards in charge as of late--that it seems like committing violence is actually the moral course of action.
I've always thought that men of action were put on this planet to protect those who couldn't fight for themselves: the old, the weak, the nonviolent. How wonderful it would be if the most powerful country on Earth would not only act with violence when necessary but at the same time aspire to the teachings of men like Jesus, Gandhi, and MLK.
Instead, we have a nation full of yahoos like yourselves (I'm assuming you're a fellow American) who seem not only willing to use force, but are actually downright eager about the whole thing. Almost like it's a game of, "yeah, all you other countires, check this out! wow, that's an amazing amount of whupass we're bringing out to our enemies, isn't it? our cocks are just soooo huge. go ahead, say it! are cocks are fucking huge"
As to your point that you'd have liked to see Gandhi use nonviolence against someone like the Nazis, I'm wondering exactly what you mean by that? If you're saying nonviolence wouldn't have worked in that instance, then I'm in agreement with you. However, if you were at all implying that Gandhi would've been scared to stand up to them, then you'd be dead wrong. It's not like there weren't a lot of death threats before he was finally assasinated, you know. Being a highly vocal messanger of peace isn't exactly the safest occupation in the world.
That aside, maybe this is what Linux needs, a great native (no win32 version) game where the first few levels are free, but you'd have to pay to play the rest of it. Of course, we'd have to hope pirates wouldn't ruin the system for everybody.
Academia isn't a bad thing, that's for sure. But in a field like IS, I would suspect that someone who didn't have any realworld experience wouldn't be worth all that much. I know a manager who tells me that fresh graduates of MBA programs know a lot, but they never know nearly as much as they think they do. And as a recent, almost two years now, graduate of a computer science BS program I can tell you, from my experience and those of my peers, that you learn a lot on the job in the computing field.
When you mix those two fields and come up with IS, I would imagine that you get a domain in which pure academic knowledge is not of much use unless it is coupled with some time in industry.
Also, keep in mind that being a professor is not all about teaching. There is a tremendous pressure to research and write paper after paper if you even hope to get tenure.
Somebody mod this guy up. Any bleeding-edge computer will play the latest games well for 2-3 years, max. Contrast that with the typical console lifecycle (and the console's much cheaper price!) and you have a relatively cheap gaming experience.
If people want to argue that PC games are better than console games, that's fine--people will always disagree on that. But don't tell me PC gaming has a better cost/benefit ratio--that's . ..well, a lot of insulting words come to mind, that's all.
P.S. The kind of rant you indulged in is why everyone sees Libertarians as a bunch of whiners.
I too love quoting the inimitable Berke Breathed, but I'm afraid you missed the parent's point. It's not that he thinks taxes are too high (the Libertarian's lament), but that taxes are too fscking complicated! Don't you dare tell me you think the Tax Code is simple, I'll call you a liar to your face!
It's time for the politcians to realize that the tax code eats away lots of time and energy and is horribly ineffecient. It eats away at productivity.
And am I the only one who thinks making public policy through the Tax Code is fscking idiotic?!?! You want college to be cheaper? How about instead of a godamn tax credit you just pay part of a student's tuition? Either way, it's money lost for the general treasury (lost revenue versus increased expenditure) but this way maybe there's one less thing we have to worry about come tax time. One less receipt, one less call to the overpaid CPA.
I predict that we won't simplify our ridiculous system for at least 100 years (and that's probably a rather hopeful estimate).
P.S. For the record, I don't think taxes are too high, esp. for the uber-wealthy who always weasel out of them (thanks again, tax code!)
Thanks for pointing out the factoid on race. It's something I learned while taking frosh anthro and later had confirmed by someone in the bio department. It seems to me that people just love talking about different "races" b/c they like to stress the differences between all of us rather than all of the things we have in common. Like how we talk about "white" and "black" people when we're all really shades of pink and brown.
When was Spider-Man ever stronger than the Hulk? Even in their very first encounter, when the Hulk unwittingly attacked him due to trickery from the Green Goblin (yes, I'm aware of how much I'm embarrasing myself by posting this) the Hulk was clearly the stronger of the two.
AFAIK, the only time Spider-Man was stronger than ole' Hulky was when he temporarily inherited the powers of
Captain Universe.
Look, if a company is willing to replace a damaged DVD--assuming they're the ones eating the shipping cost--then what would a buyer need to make backup copies for? Somehow I have a feeling that even if the MPAA as a whole ever agreed to replace all damaged DVDs at no cost then people would still find something to whine about.
considering our University system is the undisputed finest in the world
For those who can afford it anyway. Of course, you can always go if you're willing to put yourself in massive debt.
This country works such that the very bright among the very poor can obtain educational grants; however, unless he's very bright, a student just above the poverty line has to settle for student loans.

But I don't even believe in Jeebus!
. . . the same drive that's pushing some people to want government health care, government schooling, etc.
Ok, maybe I'm missing something, but don't we have government schooling already? Doesn't it go by the name "public school"?
For one, why the hell did the Enterprise not just beam them up when they were under fire??!!
They explained that; there was something wrong with the planet's atmosphere or something. That's why they didn't just beam down in the first place.
Peter David could write a good ST script, I'm sure. Some of the best ST novels are his.
Heinlen, not Hanlon.

Sites like Tom's Hardware and Anandtech are group therapy for spendthrifts who attach their masculinity to their Quake framerates.
That was the funniest thing I've heard all day! If it were a little shorter, I'd ask your permission to make it my sig.

Would you question other stories a journalist writes, when you find one that has typeos and gramatical mistakes in it?
[Insert obligatory jab at slashdot here]
AC, thanks for the info. I'll be sure to stop by the library and check it out.

The people you're correcting with regards to comicbook spelling minutiae are the same ones who don't know the difference between "loose" and "lose" :)

I concede your point.
They went to court and got their penalty . . .
What penalty? The DOJ completely rolled over on this one.
If you have any news articles regarding a Linux company paying folks to spread pro-Linux, anti-MS FUD I'd love to see them.
