Nice how Slashdot omitted the nationalities of the recipients. They were two Frenchmen and one German woman. Had any of them been American, I highly suspect that it wouldn't had gone unmentioned.
Here's an idea for Google that's been on my mind for several months. Yes, I'm giving it out for free.
Let me upload an image in my hard drive to Google and have them check it against the zillion images on their catalog. Then give me a page with all the similar copies it could find, with a thumbnail and the URL from where it originates.
One practical use I can think of: Someone you meet on the web sends you a photo claiming to be of him/herself. With this Google utility, you could upload that same image and have Google tell you if it exists anywhere on the web. Then you'd know if this person just took it off a MySpace profile, etc.
Another practical use: Look for prior art or copyright violations on images someone claim is original work. Could be very useful for Wikipedia.
Today, Putin has just approved construction of Vostochny between 2010 and 2018 which will be positioned in the far east of Russia to complement the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the northern part of the country.
It's the Plesetsk Cosmodrome the one in northern Russia, NOT the Vostochny Cosmodrome, which is near the border with China. That means SOUTHERN Russia.
The default Finder behavior when you drag a file from one volume to another is to copy the file. To do a move you press the Command key and drag the file to its new destination.
The second you drop the file, it begins copying the file to the destination volume, but the original file disappears... poof, gone. If you stop the move operation, you're left with an incomplete file in the destination volume and with nothing in the original volume. This is to me a major bug.
This is convenient for getting quick results, however this could result in massive fraud. Come on Americans, learn from the rest of the world. Vote with paper ballot and read the ballots publicly, with the press and party representatives looking. This is the only fully transparent way of voting and counting results. And schedule elections for Sundays.
The supposedly 'healthiest' democracy in the world has one of the most backward voting systems I've seen. Not to mention that duopoly/cuasi dictatorship called the Democrat/Republican parties.
Plain simple, schedule elections to take place on Sundays, like the rest of the world. And for f**k's sake, use PAPER BALLOT (the *only* 100% transparent voting method)! What is wrong with the U. S. of A.???
I can't find a link, but I'm sure I saw a National Geographic documentary on technicians using robots to fix subterranean cables on Paris' massive underground network of tunnels.
It's sad really how nobody remembers that the French were decisive in getting Americans gain their independence. From Wikipedia:
The colonists' victory at Saratoga led the French into an open alliance with the United States. In 1781, a combined American and French Army, acting with the support of a French fleet, captured a large British army, led by General Charles Cornwallis, at Yorktown, Virginia. The surrender of General Cornwallis ended serious British efforts to find a military solution to their American problem.

I suggested this in April.

The potential for something like this is massive.
More like 6,000 if you're talking about written history. Think Sumerians.
Wish I had mod points so I could mod down this ignorant post.
But concerted human action *can* bring about change. And the Internet allows that.
It's not the "Internets" changing anything, it's the people using it making that change possible.
So I guess it's okay to rob your house because you left the door open.
The road that pic was taken on is called "Escondido" -- Spanish for "hidden."
Not much hidden in my view...
The paper's author is Adam M. Gershowitz, not Alan. And he's not to be confused with Alan M. Dershowitz, of Reversal of Fortune fame.
Non-compete clause.

This is why, for large files, I always copy.
MacUpdate's had this for years.
Example: http://www.macupdate.com/adobe will trigger a search for Adobe software.
Why not charging monopolies higher taxes? Get them where it hurts most.
Because Americans are masters at self-whoring and self-promotion. And people believe the hype!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for!
So .su me!
Yep. Mod up.
If there's one area where computers should be kept as far away as possible is this one.
Sure you can use them later, after the hand count, to more easily calculate results, but for the voting itself, it's a big no-no to me.

I'm amazed that you managed to write this up within the first 2 minutes the story was published! Or am I missing something?
Because you live in a country, within a society, not in a remote island.
So tired of that.
