I can vouch for the statement on Japanese education. Just last week I was in Japan for 10 days chaperoning American kids as they visited various elementary schools and a Junior High. Occasionally we would bump into an English speaking teacher or administrator and we exchanged cultural differences between our education systems. I left those conversations with a feeling of admiration for the Japanese education system (kids clean the school, begin learning English in 4th grade, no graffiti, respect for teachers and authority, focus on learning) along with an appreciation of our own educational system (range of extracurricular activities, multiple languages offered in curricula, sought after colleges & universities ). Additionally, most people seemed to agree that Japanese students were much more apt to improve on an existing idea rather than come up with a new or inventive idea. Japanese students seemed to take direction very well, but were a bit lost if asked to take initiative or formulate a hypothesis that would then be tested. It was very interesting to see how our kids approached various issues and how they seemed to complement the slightly different approach taken by the Japanese students.

  7. Contributor to poor mass transit in the US? on IBM Patents Pricing Motorists Off Highways · · Score: 1

The following link describes the General Motors streetcar scandal, which is likely a contributing reason to why the US mass transit system is so poorly developed.

    From the article:

The Great American Streetcar Scandal was the sequence of events in which General Motors, Firestone Tire, Standard Oil of California and Phillips Petroleum formed the National City Lines (NCL) holding company, which acquired most streetcar systems throughout the United States, dismantled them, and replaced them with buses in the early 20th century. The scandal alleges that NCL's companies had an ulterior motive to forcibly gain mass use of the automobile among the U.S. population by buying up easy-to-use mass light rail transportation countrywide and dismantling it, leaving populations with little choice but to drive.

You totally missed my point. I agree teachers deserve higher salaries. There's no doubt about that. It's a thankless job and requires a certain type of person. It's interesting that most people arguing this issue are obviously not teachers. Everyone thinks they know what's best for students, teachers, and administrators...especially those who have no direct involvment.

  13. Re:Waste of taxpayer money on The Ballpark Stadium of the Future · · Score: 1

A professional athletic team is much more valuable to a city than you might think. The stadium alone is a source of revenue and advertisement for the city, not to mention the benefits of hosting many other activities (high school sports, monster trucks, professional wrestling, concerts, etc) that benefit citizens. Most stadiums also come with gigantic convention centers that are an additional source of income. If these things weren't making money and benefitting the city, they wouldn't continue to be built.

I disagree with parent. These people are not teaching because of the money. They are doing it because they enjoy working with children. I would argue the problem is not with the quality of teachers, the problem is with administrators (who make big bucks). Administrators are setting the tone of your school and determining the path for success or failure. Dramatically increasing teacher salaries will attract a completely different set of people to the profession. I believe that would be a bad thing.
