  1. That's weird... on Red Hat License Challenged · · Score: 2, Interesting

So, by charging for their services they're able to use a license that relates to their clients' use of the software? How is that different from licensing the actual software?

  3. What's really important for you? on Executing a Mass Departmental Exodus in the Workplace? · · Score: 5, Insightful

If the company really is in 'deep financial shit' then your action could be the final straw. And if you're as important as you say you are then your action will have a severe impact on the company at this difficult time. I guess you need to ask yourself what you feel is more important: the well-being of the company (and your source of employment) or your personal pride? Perhaps you ought to think about how lucky you are to even HAVE a job right now.

You work phone tech support and you can afford to "appeal all the way to the supreme court"? Why not spend a tiny fraction of how much that'll cost on paying this guy the 12 grand the RIAA took?

Does it really matter? The RIAA gains more through these high-profile cases than they do through actually getting some sort of sentence through the courts.

  7. Re:why ohh why.. on The Computational Requirements for the Matrix · · Score: 1

This is the same sort of idea you get in Dan Simmons' Hyperion books - that AI are usings humans (first by using spare brain 'clock cycles' when they're going through farcaster gates and then through the cruciform symbiotes) to perform calculations for them. In my opinion, this idea makes for a more coherent and interesting plot; shame the W brothers went with the power idea.

  8. Re:Feeling a little empty after watching on Latest Animatrix Short Released · · Score: 3, Informative

I've read that the original intention was that the rationale behind farming humans was to use them as nodes in a huge parallel processing computer. However, this idea was dropped because it was thought that your average viewer wouldn't understand it. Unfortunately, can't find a link that would back this up. It would be encouraging if this was true, though.

I agree - GNUCash has been great for my fairly basic needs (once I got it installed that is - that really epitomised dependency hell for me and I still haven't installed Finance::Check properly). Since I'd never used a personal accounting package before the biggest hurdle was getting to grips with the concepts of double entry accounting. That was a really useful skill for me to pick up. And it isn't entirely bug-free (some of the reporting functions didn't work properly but in day-to-day use it's been fine) but the devs were always helpful on their IRC channel, even with questions I realised were stupid afterwards.
