  1. Shouldn't we build it AWAY from cities? on Giant International Fusion Reactor Draws Nearer · · Score: 0

Both Japan and France have a ton of cities... shouldn't the reactor be in some really remote location, like either a desert, or up in Alaska? The world's biggest fusion reactor has the potential to cause the world's biggest reactor disaster... so it should probably be far away from everything. Of course, let's not all forget that it will still only be a fraction of the size of THE SUN, which is already a working fusion reactor, spewing a virtually infinite amount of energy at us all the time. We should just make giant solar cells everywhere, and be done with it.

  2. "The #1 non-adult related webcam! on X10 Xmas Light Control with Pan and Zoom · · Score: 5, Funny

Making it 10 trillionth overall" - Simpsons.
Seriously, though, I'd bet that this site would do really well if on xmas eve, santa showed up and deposited presents, and then did a pole dance or something.

  3. There are applications like this... on Sentient Data Access · · Score: 2, Interesting

Applications like this exist, but they are not for access to the general public. It's easy to imagine that with the long-time existence now of "plus cards" at grocery stores, their users have been tracked down to the individual M&M bag, in terms of buying habits. The store can tell you what you're most likely to buy next, and print out coupons for those items.

  4. How come many Mp3's don't have this data? on Cultured Perl: Fun with MP3 and Perl, Part 1 · · Score: 1

How did it come to pass that mp3 ripper's don't pull this data from the CD? RealPlayer, Windows Media player, etc. all show me data for the CD I am listening to, if available. Are there really that few CD's that include the proper information?
Furthermore, are there programs that are erasing the data from these MP3's when they are being circulated?

  5. Does WinAmp render right finally on Win2k? on Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5! · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have used WinAmp in the past, and like most apps with "skins", it flashes, blinks, doesn't quite work right, and is generally retarded on Windows machines. Does this version finally work OK? Does anyone else have these problems?

  6. cluster? on Japanese Pocket-Size PC Cube Demonstrated · · Score: 1

You could put a ton of those in a two-rack-space case... probably 16 or 20, right? I wonder how the heat dissapation is, because that would beat the rack density of just about everyone!

  7. Good reason to get a clear cased pda on Hitachi Readies Fuel Cell for PDAs · · Score: 1, Interesting

This is all the more reason for there to be a transparent case option for pda's. How cool would it be to see the board, plus a glow-in-the-dark mod'ed fuel cell? Sweet!

  8. What about clips or something? on Music Industry Develops Centralized File-Sharing System · · Score: 2, Insightful

There needs to be some element of the music that can be sampled or shared -- and I mean for every single track on the system. The whole reason people have to share music illegally is because it's impossible to sample every track on an album without buying the album first. People are wise to the fact that a lot of the time, albums have one or two good songs, and no one's dumb enough to go out and buy an album like that without sampling it first. For this system to work, you need to be able to sample any and all tracks that you want, and to share those samples with everyone, and then get kickbacks if those shares are turned into sales... like an affiliate program.
wow, my brain is working today!

  9. "nerd" still hopelessly and tragically uncool on We Are All Nerds Now · · Score: 1

I am sorry, but it's pretty obvious if you have been to high school or watched TV since last week that nerds are still uncool... which is tragic, IMHO. Our society loses more bright minds due to it not being "cool" to be smart, versus say Japan, a country that consistently kills the US in terms of high-tech innovations per capita. We should all pray for the day that the word "nerd" is simply another word for "cool", but it will be a long time coming -- the beer drinking, 100 IQ populous still pays for all the TV ads, and thus nerdiness is still uncool.

  10. Space program needs more $ on Space Shuttle to be Outfitted with New Sensors · · Score: 1

They should definitely do an in-space inspection of the shuttle...and NASA should have more $ to help pay for such excursions. They are working on such a shoestring, it's unbelievable. The 100 million dollar mars probe crashed, but the 1 billion dollar viking landed just fine... hmmm....

  11. yay! but... boo! on Solaris 8 & 9 Free for x86 Once Again · · Score: 0

Yay, it's free! But, boo! How is Sun gonna make money by giving away the one product they always charged for? Help me to understand.

  12. The flaw of percentages on PC Mag - Mac OS X Insecure · · Score: 1

There is one problem. How many OS X flaws would there have to be to equal the mass of users' flaws that are running Windows? Tons. OS X just isn't installed on that many computers. What's more, Mac doesn't ignore problems or issue quick fixes -- they actually try to fix it. This has been my experience, having used Mac OS's since they came out. They crash less in my experience, but if you are connected to the internet and just download random stuff, you're still gonna be in some trouble.

  13. Development " environment " the same? on The Linux Development Platform · · Score: 0

Of course the environment was the same all those years -- the only way to do it was with a text editor. I don't really get why that is a big deal. Now that there are GUI's that people can attach onto UNIX/LinuX, different development environments have sprung up like dandelions.

  14. How much aggregate bandwidth? on Warflying 2013 Access Points in Los Angeles · · Score: 1

If you were to start a download and use DA or some such program, how much aggregate bandwidth could you use from the airplane? several gigs per second, I imagine!

  15. DoS, or just no one cares? on Security Experts Doubt SCO's Claims of DoS · · Score: 1

What if it's just that no one cares about the SCO case, and so they attacked themselves to get press? I'd bet that was more likely than an actual external DoS attack. Besides, what hacker(s) would waste their time DoS'ing SCO when they can be DoS'ing Microsoft or some other more humorous target?

  16. Software patents extremely grey area on When Good Patents Go Bad · · Score: 2, Insightful

Here is the trouble I have. Suppose I come up with a piece of software that can perfectly transcribe english from speech to text - accents and all, right out of the box. Shouldn't that be worth a patent?
How about the guy with the patent on the blinking cursor? Great ideas, right? So, where does the line get drawn? Obviously, patenting something already in use is bad, but what about really obvious things that no one bothered to do yet?
For years, Ford had to pay a different company for a patent on the internal combustion engine. They literally had to wait for the patent to run out!

  17. Of course, vague opt-in is still legal on UK Spam Law Goes Live · · Score: 1

All they have to do now is to use an opt-in with vague wording, like "check here if you Don't want offers", and then later "check here if you do want offers"... after a few of those, many people would accidentally check the wrong one, and be spammed into oblivion -- legally no less!

  18. Takes you right back on Kermit Alive and Well on the Space Station · · Score: 2, Insightful

Boy, it takes me back to read the word "Kermit" when not related to a frog... I actually used to use that... but there was no Slashdot then to talk about it on.

  19. Rendering times are about to go way down on Emachines 64-bit Athlons Now On Sale · · Score: 0, Redundant

Imagine what Pixar , etc will be able to do with an array of 64-bit emachines.
Heck, imagine what I'm gonna do with them!
    SWEET!

I will be installing 64-bit Linux and a 64-bit renderer immediately.

  20. client transactions, hmmm... on SCO Investor Changing the Deal · · Score: 1

What other transaction is there for SCO than the lawsuit? Obviously that was a protective move in case SCO discovers that in fact, some one of their coders actually did a poor man's copyright on the whole SCO UNIX source, and then died or something.

  21. All that work for a SW III spoiler... on The Definitive Episode 3 Spoiler Synopsis · · Score: 4, Funny

All that research! If we could only focus that amount of mental power on piecing together other important issues, like where Saddam Hussein is, or what exactly Michael Jackson was doing with those kids...

  22. Digital music player? don't you mean HDD? on Portable MP3 Hardware Sales Up · · Score: 1

CD players are digital music players too... I think there needs to be a new phrase to describe the HDD playing devices, i.e. solid-state music players.

  23. Spam funders? on Examining an Automated Spam Tool · · Score: 2, Insightful

  24. Advanced project managers... on Outsourcing Winners and Losers · · Score: 4, Funny

who, since the coder jobs are overseas, probably don't know how to code themselves. Furthermore, because the developers are now overseas, the project managers have to coordinate with the language, distance, and cultrual gap, despite probably not knowing how to program. It's no wonder software development has become ridiculous. By the way, project manager with programming experience for hire right here.
Plus I have a fine art degree... try finding that overseas!

  25. Preaching to the choir on The Rise and Rise of IT Administrators · · Score: 1

This article is great, but it should be forwarded to every CTO in the country, and then bcc'd to their CEO with an attachment that reads, "your CTO knows this now, so if they don't act on it in 6 weeks, sack them."
That might get some things happening! I certainly hope everyone who needs to read this and understand it can do that -- that's my special holiday wish.
