Screw writing my congressman. I obviously need to write some federal judges with multiple words of praise! I encourage fellow slashdotters to do the same.
It pays to have sanity in the one branch that has the final word on so many issues important to us: the judicial branch.
Look, the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission discusses telecommunications standards and spectrum regulations (per TFA). Let's suppose Kerry supported standards and spectrum regulations beneficial to the members of this commission... Members of this commission should be expected to support his election. Now, Kerry doesn't win. Did they error? How are they no longer fit to serve on this commission? Why can't they be retained to serve in the best interest of their industry?
It's not only possible to participate in politics in an apartisan manner, it's what our forefathers hoped for.
I don't want or need a leader. I want a representative. I don't care if a president starts out Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Green... once they're in that big seat, it's their responsibility to represent and serve EVERY American, whether they agree with them or not.
"...
why would any President in his/her right mind appoint somebody that didn't represent their views?
Well, maybe if the President wished to fulfill their role as servant to, and representative of, the American people. In that case, you'd kind of want your appointees to represent the varied opinions of the American people. But what do I know?
The guy's older than me, yet I can't help but think that I have far more gaming experience. He's apparantly unaware of just what happens when a genre becomes popular.
Just you wait Zonk. Give it two years and these stealth games will contain headshots, big explosions, high speed racing, and athletic prowess. As well as conspicuously placed fruit in numerous quantities, which will be required to develop the miracle drug that saves the president from heart failure (and opens up secret fantasy levels with stars and hearts).
Sincerely apologizing for the run on sentence, -deltasigma-
My "price" for DRM'd media is simple. Sell DRM-infected media to the hopeless masses at a discount. While I will pay full price for premium (read: unrestricted) content. If five years from now everyone's buying DRM-infected music at 20 cents per song, I'll still be willing to pay the full dollar for the good stuff.
I won't pay much MORE than I'm paying now mind you. But I'd be willing to forego the impending cost savings that comes when we finish our plunge into digital distribution.
Suppose I set this WINE registry key in a valid Win2k install (I actually own a legitimate copy of Windows, hooray for me). Would I thus be barred from these updates even though I have a perfectly legitimate installation of Windows? I don't think the EULA for Windows or Office includes "and thou shalt not set HKLM/SOFTWARE/WINE/CurrentVersion... etc."
So wouldn't they, in this instance, be denying a perfectly legitimate user the software updates that they are supposed to provide? Is there a legal case here?
Oh come off it. Small Form Factor isn't a standardized form factor like ATX. Thus nothing could be closer to the Small Form Factor than the visionaries of it, and that would be Shuttle. The Mac-Mini has FAR more in common with Mini-ITX systems than it does SFF systems. A similarity undoubtedly acknowledged by Mac's engies with the "Mac-Mini" name. There's nothing "mini" about a shuttle box. The comparison of a mini-itx equivalent to a Small Form Factor class PC was just senseless.
But it still wasn't malicious intent. I believe any sane court would find that the defendant did redistribute the copyrighted material in question, thus breaking standard copyright law and breaching his agreement. However, this was not done with the intent of damaging Apple's reputation, or financial gains.
The boy's not going to get off of the copyright infringement part of the case just because he gets off of the malicious intent part, but his sentence should be lighter.
...I immensely enjoyed Doom3. I think it's the best engine on earth. And even though this guy picks Half-Life 2 as his preferred game, I consider this article to be quite fair.
I still won't be purchasing Half-Life 2 because I dislike Valve's method of dealing with their community, and dislike Sierra's C&D letters. But I'm not going to try to stop anyone else from buying Half-Life 2 because in the end, video-games are all about entertainment. If HL2 entertains you more than D3 then you owe it to yourself to buy it.
You'd be a fool, however, if you didn't check back on Doom3 in a few months to a year when we've got our mods out.
You have to admit, he worded the post well. He doesn't appear outraged, or surprised. He's not making it out to be a vast conspiracy. He just seems to be stating what we all feel: we should have the final say on how our own property operates.
Eh, don't let that scare you. Out in the goth parts we've got our own scary "conservative" that said roughly the same thing recently.
Believe it or not, this wacko is also publishing a book.
So don't sweat it, there's a lot of weirdos out there, I think the REAL majority of Americans understand this was a close election and compromises will still have to be made by both parties.
But all other things can't be equal if strength/weight differ. For instance, it's reasonable to assume that the lighter of two trained fighters would be more agile. This isn't going to help him much in the boxing ring, but does help quite a bit in most of the realistic places an average person is likely to get in a fight.
Boxing works as a sport delimited by weight class precisely because all other variables are the same. The ring is always the same size, the same shape, etc.
Freestyle fights are difficult to call because there are so many variables one must account for in any given conflict.
I'd have to agree that boxers pitted against each other from a different weight class in a standard boxing ring would often see the heavy-weight winning.
Outside of that though, environment can play a big role, as can technique.
I'm with you, or rather, I would be. However the differences between the Republican and Democrat candidates on such issues seems very slim. There certainly would be benefit to political discussion on a tech site such as slashdot were it not for the fact that there's so little to discuss...
It doesn't matter who I vote for tomorrow I'm still looking at rediculous DMCA-like bills being passed in the next presidential term.
Really. He was doing good right up until the last sentence...

That's does it. I'm just going to bookmark your profile and read your submissions list from now on. Congratulations, you are now my slashdot.
Tell me about it.

What's that?
They must have coerced him pretty early then: Original Interview.

This price, is non-negotiable.

F*** the children! I want a Game Boy with integrated PIM and cellular!
And through all that you don't manage to tell us what made you think Half-Life was the most modded game in history.

What makes Gentoo good: You can compile everything!
What are Gentoo's shortcomings: You often end up compiling things.
John Carmack has nothing to do with Half-Life 2
Sadly, Teoma's front-page seems to have a rendering error in my FireFox 1.0 browser.
Yes. If only there was a way to allow Valve to know that I'm not purchasing their offering because of this fact, outside of a snotty letter.
