despite the fact that many indie bands burn their own music to CD-R to sell it
Don't get me wrong... I think that people should be allowed to sell their music recoreded on a CD-R on Ebay if they want to, but don't the people selling this music owe it to their customers to do a little better??
Seriously, if I'm going to pay for music, I want a real CD... and maybe a nice jewel case and cover. IF musicians want to sell their product on Ebay in order to make some money, would it really hurt them to invest a little money into their product? It doesn't cost that much to have real CDs produced... and since we live in a world that revolves around marketing, wouldn't it help these small bands to produce a product that people will be able to remember (not just the music, but the CD cover as well??)
They'll latch onto and chase down ideas you've never found important or even knew existed.
This is an understatement!! I have been running an online gaming community (http://www.coldfirestudios.com) for the past 3 years, and I can honestly say that the games my friends and I create would not be nearly as good as they are today without the ideas and input we got from our users. Moral of the story: LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!! Sometimes, they know your product better than you do!
They'll also tend to develop some strange characteristics.
Tell me about it! I have one guy that called himself Pizza da Hutt... he made a web site about his battles and used Star Wars analogizes in EVERYTHING he posted. Everyone he fought was Jedi (* fill in the blank *). We even had people looking up our company's phone number, just so they could say "Hi" to us by viewing our domain name registration information. We have a couple of users that call us, long distance, on a daily basis, just to report people breaking the rules or to see if some of us are going to be playing War Craft. But I can't complain too much. They keep us on our toes... and they are not even half as bad as some of the everquest people I've seen:)

Maybe the author should have held off releasing this book... he might have been able to make more $$$ selling a Perl 6 book rather than another Perl 5 book (since every good programmer has a half dozen Perl 5 books anyways)

In case you haven't heard, we're kinda in a recession!!! The only bank accounts that MIGHT get a X-mas bonus are those with EIN numbers associated with them... not a SSN!!!
There are MANY companies that are not just cancelling X-mas bonuses, but that are taking salray and benifits away from people right now to cover their loses.... and don't even think about asking when the company X-mas party is this year (you'll just get laughed at)

for using Google's good name for free advertising!
Is it just me, or does this wreak of a cheap PR campaign for SearchKing?
Has anyone even heard of searchking before this article?
Maybe searchking will be able to sell enough casino ads to pay Google for the rights to use thier name in a pointless law suit that is really just a cheap advertising campaign!
Two words for the wonderful people at Google : COUNTER SUIT!!!
"The software company was forced to pull the advertising, which mimics rival Apple's Switch campaign from Windows XP to the Mac, after keen-eyed regulars to the Slashdot tech news and discussion Web site noticed irregularities in the case study of an anonymous woman that was presented on the Microsoft Web site."
When you are making $1 profit on each drive, the shipping costs alone for a warranty replacement will eat up all of the profits for multiple drives.
That statement is incorrect. Anybody that puts together a solid business model would have warrenty costs built into the product's original cost.
It may be true that they are only making $1 one each drive at this moment, but now they will make $2 on each drive because they will have to build in less warrenty cost into the product's price.
Also consider this. They have reduced the warrenty period from 3 years to 1 year... don't you think that they are also going to increase their profit to $2.50 - $3.00 per drive by using less stringent testing methods and using a smaller sample size when testing their units since now they can be MUCH less reliable?? The other possiblity is that they use lesser parts in their drives since they now know they only need to make the drives last for one year instead of three... the drives only have to last one third of the time they originally had to last!!!
Now, they will make it so the drives only last 2 years (1 year less than their previous warrenty required and one more year than the current one requires). Any one that can't see the basic business behind this decision needs to make a stop to the eye doctor (and please stay off the roads!)
I wish I was the V.P. that got credit for this lesser warrenty idea.... I'd be in Maui right now!
Hmmmm.... although Gateway is just about at the bottom of my list of PC vendors... maybe some good can come from this!
Maybe M$ will get PO'ed enough to stop selling bulk Windows XP licenses to Crapway in an effort to force them to package their office "productivity" (I laugh my balls off when I hear that... productivity... heh!) package with their systems. Then, Crapway will be forced to switch to Linux... or BeOS (ok,maybe not Be)S)...:)
Then again, this might be bad since it is usually clueless cow-lovers that purchase crapways... and I'd hate to see them trying to learn something new...
But again, this would force Shitway to fire all their Windows monkies and hire some REAL consultants.... which should be cheaper than having to pay for a Windows license for every system they sell...

Note to the CEO of Gateway: You're moving in the right direction... now finsih the job and totally dump Billy Boy and his pack of vampires on their asses!!!
Oh, and do something about that crappy hardware while you're at it....
The last actual chapter, Chapter 13, is a more in-depth look at U.S. web accessibility law. This was another one that I skimmed but one section did catch my eye. There is a discussion that raises the scary idea that web developers may be held liable for inaccessible web sites, even if their client told them to ignore the issue. If this is true, then it is an important point for every web developer to consider -- could you be held liable?
Don't get me wrong, I think that web sites should be made to be accessible to everyone... but being FORCED to make them accessible!! Isn't that going a little too far??... especially if a web developer is held liable even though his client said not to worry about it???!!??
Again, I don't want to sound like a big jerk here, but where does freedom of expression and freesom to create come into play here? If a person wants a "cool" looking web site, and uses features that don't follow the "code"... or if they don't want ugly alt tags popping up all over their site when people put the mouse over a pic.. that should be their right!
However, since I am a web developer, maybe I should pick up a copy of this book to keep up on the laws on this issue.... (but I'll allow the review of this book determine if I purchase THIS book)
Are there any other good books out there that have similar content?? - anyone???
Although your music tastes may be very limited, many people like a VERY wide variety of music... which usually varies depending on their mood. Although I agree that 20 gig may be a bit excessive, it isn't out of the range of possibility. I'm not a MP3 nut myself, but I do have over 5 gig of MP3s burned onto CD, so I could easily see people putting 10 - 15 gig of music on this device... especially if they are like me and enjoy listening to live music performances.
Besides, a portable hard drive, as you propose, would require making the enclosure for the device larger... thus making it suck more than iPod even more in that category!! I know that "they" say "size matters", but in this case, smaller is better! (size is a GREAT marketing tool)
Also, the batteries may run out using today's batteries, but in a year or so... their might be a new standard for batteries that make it possible to listen to all 20 gig twice...
Have faith in technology...
And besides, isn't it better to have extra space rather than not having enough space? This way, 99.5% of the people will not complain about not being able to carry their entire MP3 collection with them every where they go!!! (another good marketing tool)
Yes, this is "an invasion of privacy", but what is the big deal? Does eeryone think that they are so important that the government wants to spy on them? Gimme a break!
I don't have anything to hide... so I don't mind this. If anything, this is a tool that could help protect me and the other millions of innocent people from those people that do have something to hide...

'Not only is piracy of copyrighted works illegal, it can take up a significant percentage of a university's costly bandwidth.'
Here is a message from the UIS directors from Kent State...:)
Everyone,
This is short because I am in hurry, so this will be very short.
Our traffic shaper is not able to cope with the newest P2P file sharing
tools. I was at the OarTech meeting yesterday and other campuses have
had the same problem starting one to two weeks ago. The P2P users are
tunneling through HTTP and the packet shaper gets confused by it will,
over time, lower the throughput of other packet types. Right now, about
40% of our outgoing traffic is http originating from 10 ResNet users.
The solution to this problem is to upgrade the software on Packeteer. We
are waiting for a price quote and will install the new software ASAP.
HTTP is prioritized over most other traffic, so anything with lower
priority has to compete for whatever is left after all the other traffic
goes through. We thought the HTTP rules included HTTPS, but we found out
that is not true. Friday morning we will prioritize HTTPS at the same
level ast HTTP. That should help the access to our important HTTPS sites.
